being a spinning rod fisherman for a while now, i have used this light line technique for a while as well as thicker line. i found i get way more bites when i use around 8lb for the depths i fish, specially here in the clear water
Makes me nervous using braid to another line. Mainly because I may hook into a 30 inch striped bass and I do NOT want to have a $20 bait gone, I’d be so sad
@@willbutler2639 Will, tie the right knot and the rig will be just as strong as the leader line. Plus you can upsize the braid and still get the small diameter advantages of depth Randy was getting from light Floro
I'm a firm believer in light line, goes back to trout fishing. Hook a five pound brown on four pound line and it's off to the races. I've taken those toothy walleye on six pound also. But it's hard to catch anything when the boat is pitching 30 degrees from side to side. What's the chance of getting a navigation hazard buoy online?
It seems like lighter line gets more bites on the same baits, it almost doesn't matter what you're fishin' for. I always got more bites with 6 lb test than anyone else on the beach. They'd laugh at my 5' Ugly Stik until I was the only person to catch any snook. So it makes sense to me that those square bills work better with light line. Do you have a video talking about back reeling? That's not a technique I've ever used. Generally I fish with a light drag and add pressure by touching the spool, but I'm open to a different way to do it. That's why I watch.
For bass I often fish with a tighter drag (still a light line spinning rod fineness tactic). If I hook a big one and they are fighting hard I will loosen the drag a botch or 2. If its a 4 plus lb fish I will pull line off the spool during the run while the drag is pulling. Doing this helps me keep a tight line on those jumping big ones that want to toss my lure!
Can make your own with like a 2-3oz sinker, put a clip on it. Spark plugs can be used. Best corded one is the Hound Dog. Also learn the “bow string” trick.
The best plug knocker is and cheap to is a old spark plug. Put line in the plug gap and tap it closed and let it slide down your line and shake will not get hung up. Works like a champ.
I made a bunch of them using old spark plugs and big swivels. I've only failed to get back 2 or 3 lures in ten years. I put the eye of the swivel in the plug gap and hammer it closed tight. Slid it down to the lure and jig it.
Some brands and styles just consistently perform better than others. Sometimes, simply trying something different, like adding a split shot or two to your lighter braids (20lb or less), can also make the difference. But only sometimes, not all the time. There's only one way to find out for sure.
I don't know, a person can afford what he wants. Instead of two Strike King's, get a Megabass. I use baits from all of the major manufacturers and feel that any companies square bill would probably work with Randy's technique. I've been doing really well with a Bill Lewis square bill, they're very affordable. That said, Megabass cranks and jerkbaits really are top of the line.
There's no secret. A great squarebill will work great during squarebill season. Let me teach you; a great squarebill is made from the right material (not necessarily best) to make it swim perfect. What is perfect? In the eyes of the elite beholder and the fish. Just bc it runs staright like an LC, doesn't make it great. Just bc it hunts like a untuned KVD, doesn't mean it's great. I am teaching you bums the highest level which you will never get to bc this level requires time, obesseions, and the spirits to find you.
After this one Randy you will have to do a video on that plug knocker that gets back 99 out of 100 hang ups.thank you
Yeah!
Toothy fisherman on tackle warehouse
He already did.
I've been fishing square bills with 8 pound test and same result I love fishing them on the light line

Thank you Randy. This another skill set I'm looking to improve.
you give very good info to us and it comes from a professional that has fished at the highest level for years, I hope you keep up the good work thanks
Thanks Randy!.. Now I'll see 'ya at the weigh in!
Thx Rando!
FISH-ON!!!
I will definitely be trying this , I even have some now , we use a lot of square bills here too

the downside is i lose them to pike up here, they love that s crank for some reason in the yellow and black in the tanic water
Yep,I think bass relate to those easy, accessible, shallow food sources, like perch, bluegills, etc.,more than we possibly know!
Love the KVD 1.5 and bandit 100 in perch color! -- 6-8# Fluorocarbon. Never fails. Easy 5 then move to different baits to catch bigger culls.
Thank you Randy!
I will try this on Saturday. Thank you Randy.
Good stuff Randy thanks.....
Thanks Randy... I'll definitely give a try..
Thank you great advice !!!
I'm gonna try this next time I'm out...thanks for sharing some of your secrets with us...
Perfect application to use 15lb braid to a 12lb Floro leader!

I fish a lot of baits on lighter line 6-8lb line
It makes a difference in my opinion and experiences
For wary fish, it's hard to find a better line for finesse fishing than 6-8 lb Fluorocarbon.

Rapala live perch nice pattern
Where can you buy that color. I haven't found any . Thanks Dale
Interesting. I’ll give it a try.
Hi Randy, please reveal your favorite plug knocker. Thank you. MH.
Thin line problems is the PIKE!!

I thought you are against sonar hello you learned how to use that crank bait squar bill on SONAR
I know you use Seaguar but have you ever tried Sunline FC Crank?! It’s like butter!
What plug knocker do you use? I’ve been wanting one but I don’t known which one would be the best.

Diawa lure retriever works great for me. It's only a around $20
@@kurtrindgen4708That is what I’ve been using since the 80s. $11.99, I bet it was five bucks back in those days!

So Randy your telling me I can fish Lake Fork with 10 and 12-lb line?
Finesse fishing your square bills 👍
So what does randy really mean when he says perch? Yellow perch, white perch?
I knew about this 8 years ago
Letting the Cat out of the bag.....
I’ve been using an s crank for years. Not really a secret
The s crank was not the secret
can't find that color on baitwerkx
The PM Gill is the perch one. I have it, it looks great
@@johnsutherland5053 Randy calls any non-bass fish a "perch". LOL!

Most people can't AFFORD MEGA BASS Crank baits
How many hard baits do you own? More than one I hope.

When in doubt consult a pro. Never heard of a plug knocker tho?
Cranking is one of my favorite ways to catch them,a plug knocker had saved me lots of plugs, jigs, plastics, well worth their cost
