Spectre is such a so great song. The the string arrangement, the piano, thom's vocal, everything is incredible. They really should have put it instead. I also find interesting how radiohead just decided to release man of war 20 later. Is such a amazing rock with electronic song. But it also shows that radiohead has a lot masterpieces to spare lol
Great topic, so excited for this double feature! Thanks for deep diving into Radiohead. I agree, Spectre is phenomenal and the perfect Bond theme. Man of War is incredible too, and the video is something else. As soon as you said you didn’t want to get distracted by the video, I thought yeah that’s not gonna happen
I remember discovering a couple of live versions of Man Of War back in the Napster days, recorded at the tail end of the OK Computer tour. So happy when this version finally got released on OK Not OK
“Aah! You have a woman’s purse! I'll wager that purse has never been used as a rowing-boat. I'll wager it's never had sixteen shipwrecked mariners tossing in it.” 🦜
Fun fact: Daniel Craig and Thom Yorke are friends. In fact, Thom is friends with a lot of actors: Edward Norton being one of the most famous. Craig actually asked Thom to write the theme, but the production team thought is was to heavy... Norton asked Yorke to write a song for a film he did, and Yorke actually made Motherless Brooklyn with Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) which Norton was just over the moon with
So beautiful Spectre is, in that inimitable Radiohead style. Too good for the cinema masses. Btw, my first band in middle school was called Spectre. Man of War pretty cool too, just not Bond-ish. Also btw, my band Paint and Copter put out a couple new videos today- crawling and distortion burn, I think you’d like crawling-pretty prog with a sci-fi theme. Thanks.
i suggest you to listen radiohead nobody does it better cover. you can find some performance and the band play this song at tv around 1995 . That a james bond cover
Especially considering what they picked instead. It's like being offered a grand meal in a five star restaurant and going "Nah, I'll just have a Big Mac."
I think the story about Man Of War is a bit different. They tried to record is back in 1998 for a new album after the long tour of OK Computer. You can see that in the documentary Meeting People Is Easy. They worked on this track and Big Ideas, which would turn into Nude on In Rainbows. At that time they abandoned both songs and Man Of War was eventually released (still the 1998 version) on the OKnotOK boxset in 2017. Many speculated that it could have been a good Bond song, but i don't think they ever submitted it. The band were never big fans of the song. Btw: Thom is friends with Daniel Graig
This is one of their best non-album tracks for sure. And that’s saying something because Radiohead are known for their many, many awesome songs that were left off albums. Strings are a standout for me on here. Jonny can do no wrong with his compositions. A Moon Shaped Pool isn’t a go-to when it comes to Radiohead’s work, but the strings really stand out and make it an interesting listening experience.
I just realized the Man of War verse almost sounds like a Cure song ( just with Radioheads brand of jazzed up rhythms). As i got older and expanded my tastes, I started to notice many of the 80's bands that possibly inspired Radiohead. Talk Talk, The Smiths and The Pixies to name a few. All wrapped with a Beatles-esque spirit of progression and un-wasted notes. Obviously Radiohead synthesized that all into something totally unique.
Great video. Spectre is a beautiful song. Sam Smith's song is very... pedestrian. Supposedly the guy were in the studio recording songs for 'A Moon Shaped Pool' and to stop everything to write and record the Spectre song.
Radiohead has some great music videos, generally much more creative than any other bands. Even though you don't normally like music videos, it's worth checking out some of their more famous ones: High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees, Just, Paranoid Android, Karma Police, No Surprises, Pyramid Song, Knives Out, Nude, Reckoner, House of Cards, Lotus Flower, Burn the Witch, Daydreaming, and I Promise are probably the ones most Radiohead fans are familiar with.
Great review. Thanks. Honestly two of my favourite Radiohead tracks and I listen to the band daily. Other non-album tracks to do reactions for are The Daily Mail and Talk Show Host - two more of my top 10 of their tracks. But Sam Smith, a good singer but his track wasn’t in the same league. Why-oh-why-oh-why.
This track is not on any of their studio albums and is actually a B side - one of my favorites - The Daily Mail- ua-cam.com/video/I4pezRt9boY/v-deo.html
Spectre supposedly reinspired the band on how to produce music and they used what they learned for A Moon Shaped Pool. I always felt they were headed in that direction, of having classical instruments accompany them fully. However, around the time of Kid A, they felt it made them too much like the Beatles. So they went with the techno style to balance it all out.
Obviously I can’t prove this, but I always thought of ‘Man of War’ as a bond theme song. I didn’t realise till now it was intended to be used as one. Cool.
Those two songs really are so great. There is no other band like Radiohead. BTW, do you have any plans on listening to "The Bends?" Sometimes I think it is my favorite Radiohead album, but only when I am in a rock sort of mood.
I agree on Spectre being the best choice, but man, Annie Hall is awesome :) I'll be in the minority here, but I've watched it way more often than I have Star Wars.
I love Down is The New Up, it's like a modern version of For The Benefit of Mr. Kite. I didn't care much for the other two. I felt they were b-sides for a reason.
i believe they wanted to get a younger audience involved , which originally more for the adults consumption i maybe wrong but they used sam smith what a stupid and utter person to use not exactly hitting for the wider audience was it
Another great video! Hoping you consider doing A Light For Attracting attention. I believe it has some of the best songs that Thom and Jonny have written together since In Rainbows.
I believe he wants to, and might get a chance to. If he does, I really hope it's a period piece set back in the Cold War where it belongs, maybe right after WW2. James Bond just doesn't work as well in the modern era, that's a mistake they keep making.
The first time since i view your channel, I do not agree with you (lol), but I loved the songs, too. I can’t see them in a movie at all. They are telling an own story. Having them in a movie were as if someone whispers something different the whole time. Sounds a bit odd, but I don’t know how to explain better. But I enjoy your Radiohead-journey a lot.
Annie Hall is way way better movie than New Hope. Yes it is became a cultural phenomenon, but it doesn’t make Stat Wars a cinema art or even good movie

I would add Radiohead tune “Down Is The New Up” to this theme.
Spectre fits perfectly on A Moon Shaped Pool
Yes, Spectre is quite melancholy, but when you consider that M had just died at the end of Skyfall, it is appropriate, imho.
Tell us more endings to movies please. Make sure to stick to the details which would distinctly diminish the power of the film to know about

Fun fact, the video is a prequel to karma police.
A great song that is on the same level as Spectre that isn’t an album you should react to is “The Daily Mail” One of my all time favorite songs.

I always thought Lovely head by Goldfrapp would have been a great Bond song.
Although I don't see Man of War as a 007 soundtrack song, it's definitely an OK Computer era favorite of mine.
i suggest you to listen radiohead nobody does it better cover. you can find some performance and the band play this song at tv around 1995 . That a james bond cover
Spy Who Loved me theme? Cool. That's on of the best too.
Yes. It's probably my favourite bond theme and the Radiohead version is very good.
Why did they not choose Spectre, seriously - beautiful track
Especially considering what they picked instead. It's like being offered a grand meal in a five star restaurant and going "Nah, I'll just have a Big Mac."

That 1998 recording of Man Of War was intended for the 1998 movie The Avengers.
Radiohead also gave Talk Show Host over for Romeo + Juliet in 1997. Fantastically cinematic.
Either song would have been a perfect Bond. The fact that Spectre got rejected was a blessing. That was a terrible Bond film imo
Specter the movie isn’t good enough for Radioheads song in my opinion

How they used Sam Smiths song over this is beyond me. Its an amazing song. As is Man of War . But i'm an obsessed Radiohead fan.........
Spectre is pretty gorgeous but it could be a little melancholy and "artsy" for a 007 flick.
instead they used the flavor of the month "sam smith" soon to be forgotten. At least "We" have the song now.

Man of War was written originally for the Avengers movie staying Uma Thurman and Ralph Fiennes. I hear a lot of Wings/Live and Let Die in it.
There's a video online where you can actually see them failing to record a version that meets their high expectations from themselves
@@drtchocky That's so frustrating because it looked to me like that was a fantastic version and the only things wrong with it were in Thom's head.
It is so ridiculous that they rejected Spectre, it's a masterpiece and easily better than Sam Smith's song.

The studio decided Radiohead's version being too dark, so they went with the gay version, SMH.
