What you are saying is so correct. Our brains are more than the stuff between our ears. We have muscle memory. Not to mention the transplant recipients begin to recall memories and emotions they never experienced before. Some going as far as making the connection with the loved ones of the person they received the transplant from. There’s so much more to it all.

As a guy of a certain age (who was listening to Jimi Hendrix in grade school, and Led Zeppelin in HS) . . . man, I have found stuff that I love to hear in every single decade of my existence. I have *no stake* in the purity of some genre . . . it doesn't have to rock, or swing, or djent, or boogie, or rhyme, or groove if that's not its original intent. And I have loved all of the above at one time or another. Wichita Lineman in the 1960s. Misty Mountain Hop in the 70s, followed by Le Freak . . . Roxanne . . . Cuts Like A Knife . . . Are You Gonna Go My Way . . . Slide . . . Under The Bridge . . . and into the 21st century with Coheed and Cambria, Incubus, and Chris Stapleton and Blackberry Smoke. Do you detect a pattern? I don't . . . . except for the guitar-intent in the music I've been loving my entire life. Love hearing it, love knowing about it, love knowing how it's made and who is making it. Cheers. 🎸🎸

Man - some heavy stuff near the end. I have enough trouble figuring out who I am and how stuff works just with my own brain in my own body 😁. But seriously, your comments about modern country music were really insightful. I may not like it, but everything you said made a lot of sense. Appreciated your candidness about it too. I've seen other session players' channels where there seems to be a reluctance to even suggest anything that would be seen as a criticism of the genre - you know, don't bite the hand that feeds you. Great video Justin!

I'm so glad you brought up Lori, she lives an hour from me in MA. I'm a huge fan of hers and write similarly, ie... a lot of dead people. 😂 I'm familiar with you from the music videos you appeared in with her more than anything else. Would you consider doing an unknown songwriter spotlight? That would be cool.

It’s gotten kinda cool to crap on Nashville. I meet so many people who claim to hate the current country music but half of them have it on the car radio when you hop in for a ride somewhere. I kinda grew up listening to a lot of folk and acoustic music and was well into adulthood before I’d heard any of the classic rock people always went on and on about. I did listen to a LOT of 90s country growing up and a good bit of the older stuff. We had a local country station that just never had an up to date playlist. Now on the backside of 30 and still figuring out what I love and what I want to play for myself… I listen to a lot of stuff that sadly will be hard to find some day. I listen to songwriters and indie acts that have less than a few thousand streams. My favorite is finding artists with a very small following and supporting them. Couldn’t really be bothered by Morgan Wallen and the like. I’ll listen to what I love and try and put my money where my mouth is. If I don’t like pop country it’s probably because I grew up and aged out of the system. I’m no longer who the suits want at the concerts. A 38 year old with a muffin top is a buzz kill at the shows now. 😂

I've got an old short scale 50s Silvertone. I paid $10 for it back in the 80s.
I tell you, for what they were, they were impressively well made intruments. There's a certain charm to the sound of those old ladder braced beaters.

Thanks for always being open to an honest conversation about music! It was more than some of those comments deserved haha. I’d love to hear you talk about acoustic strings at some point! If you’d use a different type on a guitar like this Silvertone than on a dreadnaught. I feel like I’m often fighting string noise when tracking acoustics.

I like some string noise. Lets me know a real human has their hands on a guitar. I use D’Addario phosphor bronze. I hate new acoustic strings. I have to play a lot when I put new ‘em on…gotta get that new sheen worked out before they sound good. Maybe I’ll start boiling ‘em.

Great video as always, and diggin' the "new" couch beater.
My biggest complaint with so much of what passes as songs today are that they're what I call "checklist songs". They don't tell a story, or even a point of view, they just rattle off a litany of country tropes to a good music track. Trucks in a field. Rolling the window down in a truck. Girl in a dress or cutoff jeans. Shaking a money maker. Pretty much every Tyler Hubbard song ever. Not that they're not catchy and vapid songs have their place. There are the rare standouts, like Little Big Town's "Boondocks" that manages to capture a deep piece of life. But checklist songs don't stick with you. No one's made "Texas Hold'em" "their song".

Not surprised that 90’s country music is coming around again, there were some great songs back then too. Call me crazy but Southern rock from the 70’s married to some of the newer stuff could become a thing?
I had a plywood arch top from Harmony and a Stella parlor guitar that punched well above their price point ( flea market ) wish I kept them but they weren’t really my favorites… thanks for the great video

The guitar I’ve written most of my songs on over 30 years was $85. It turned out to be a West German Cordova from 1965. Same guitar Mason Williams wrote Classical Gas on. It’s a bit of a train wreck, and I still love it!

56 here, and while I can't say anything about what is going on in current country music, I can say that every decade of country music that I have seen has had its share of critics who claim that the popular country music of the time had become too pop influenced. I remember back in the 80's, artists like Barbara Mandrell and Juice Newton were criticized at times for being too pop. Charlie Rich famously burned the card on camera that announced John Denver won the CMA award for 1975. It was great music though. Likewise, there is plenty of popular country music from back in the day that no one remembers because it just didn't stand the test of time. I personally loved the song, "Convoy", but there's a reason why it isn't going to be covered again any time soon. My two cents.

I came across this channel and was surpised enough to find a narrative where ''good old country music is dead'', and some much grief everywhere.
Honestly, as a 29yo who lives overseas I can't weigh in on the discussion. That'd be a little disrespectful from me... Still, I can say and give testimony that as far as I am from Nasvhille, Tennessee (5200 miles)... I can ride a cab, talk about Chris Stapleton, and they'll incredibly know who I'm talking about.
I feel like he deserves more credit than he is being given already, and maybe it means the return of something that is believed to be lost.
Personally, haven't feel as excited about this kind of music, since I first started listening to Johnny Cash or Hank Williams.

I never want to put down someone else’s efforts, even if it isn’t my favorite flavor. But there are guys like Jedd, that are master song writers, and performers, how do we expose the masses to the masters?

Justin, you talk about people who say things are forced on us by record producers and algorithms and it reminds me of my own life and career. I spent 3 decades in front of a live television news camera at fires, murders and all the things. 9/11. Sandy Hook Elementary. The Boston Marathon Bombing. People used to come up to us and yell at us (this happened like every day) that we only put the bad stuff on tv. It was all our fault and the fault of the networks and producers and ratings and whatever. I used to tell people that if they wanted to change tv news, that they should go home and throw away all their tv screens. If we put on the Girl Scout jamboree nobody would watch, but if we show the terrible fires and devastation in LA, people stop what they are doing to see it. Like modern country music, it is the people who consume what we produce who dictate what we produce for the most part. And that's ok. I used to tell people that what is on the tv at 6 o'clock is nothing but a mirror of society. If you want to see something different than choose to make a change. I know it is not that simple but in the end...what the majority of the people want is where we end up.

People complaining about “modern music” have really short memories. 95% of crap that makes the radio will be forgotten and it is crap but it was the same way in the 50’s, 60’s and so on. For every Stairway to Heaven that makes the charts, there’s a 100 pac-man fevers and disco ducks. For every Blue Eyes Cryin in the Rain, there’s are 50 Donny Osmonds singing Its the Twelfth of Never. It’s always been this way. In 20 years, Chris Stapleton will probably be the only one anyone remembers so just wait a few years and the crap you hate now will be forgotten and replaced… with more crap you’ll hate. 😂😂😂

I’m wondering if the problem with modern music is the process not the people. Artists sends in work tape, someone charts it and a group of strangers (albeit with flawless musicianship) lay down parts. A bit of a factory process. If you look back a the artists you mentioned you enjoyed growing up, you had the same group of guys playing together every night. Same group of guys goes in the studio makes an album and goes out and plays it every night. They had the opportunity to develop a sound. Zep sounds nothing like the Eagles who sound nothing like Pink Floyd etc. There are a few people doing this now and enjoying some success. Billy Strings comes to mind. Also Alison Krauss, same band for decades. And the 90s group The Desert Rose Band. None of them sound like the pop that is being produced.
