@@DrCassette most consumers don't have analog speakers like in the end of the 90s when mini component hifi were used, they will just buy a soundbar because it will look better or just use the internal speaker
you won't believe how this mod changed my life, i did this 3 years ago, i have the 32" tv in my bedroom and didn't have space for an amplifier, i have great sound and with replaced firmware i have even better sound (i took this tv apart because it was bricked so now i found a lot of firmwares) and i can tweak audio settings in the service menu settings, i hooked up some sony speakers from a mini hifi, i did it the easy way by just connecting wires directly from a tv hole and some electrical tape (no soldering), they sound better on this tv than the thing it came with, i can wake up with high quality sound without setting up 2 timers, i can enjoy loud music all night the tv also has a lot of features, only problem with new firmware after i bricked the tv recordings are encrypted, every firmware i tried has encryption on recordings, it's also possible to use satellite tv (i tested it and works)
Nice mod, i recently got Vox tv and first thing i have done is connected external speakers. Difference in sound is huge. I have done it differently, got cheap 2x15w amp and 12v adapter since tv came with 2 year warranty. Simple but effective.
That's exactly what I did not want to do, because you have to turn the amplifier on and off along with the TV. Are you even able to adjust the volume using the TV's remote? That's the advantage of old equipment, you can do with it whatever you want as there is no more warranty.
@@DrCassette It's connected to TV's headphone output so i can control it with remote just like i would normally. Amplifier is constantly turned on, there is no noise when working and only uses 1W of power so it's not that bad, i mounted in on back of the TV. There is also USB port on back of TV which is how i wanted to power it since it turns it on with TV but decided not to since i put movies and shows on stick so i can watch sometimes, or record shows. Would definitely go your way considering it's much simpler and uses less wires.
@@DrCassette 2.5W is enough for how loud i listen to it (considering that with 5v supply you can't even get more than 1W on 8 ohm speakers) when paired with decently efficient speakers or i could use 5v to control mosfet that would turn on amplifier. I like the way it turned out, as i said no noise when amp is in idle so i didn't want to overcomplicate things.
nice job on adding switch for speaker selection, i did the external speaker mod on one of my TV as well, but ripped the internal one and just made it external, any speaker is just sounds way better than the tiny speaker in the flat TV…
The difference is phenomenal, the sound from the TV's internal speakers sound like they are mono sound, not stereo etc. Using external speakers has made the sound, sound better...
I pretty much agree as the old CRT TVs and even a commercial TV uses a speaker out, but no modern consumer grade TVs ever had that. A TV shouldn’t really have built in speakers these days at all. They should’ve add mounts and add side speakers with at least 20 watts per channel with a 2-way bass reflex setup. And it’s a lot of money to buy a sound bar. This video is very helpful and I hope manufacturers remove built in speakers and just put in speaker outputs along with a rear, middle, center, and two subwoofer outs and maybe dolby atmos speakers out. That would be even better. The built in amplifier is more than enough, but the speakers are less than 10 watts and it’s only full range drivers that don’t go below 150HZ.
@@loudspeakertestsmorebyaida3804 90% of people don't need "good" sound quality and are fine with the tv's internal speakers, but they are not fine with buying a 4k tv every year just to watch 90% of the time SD content
Actually, there are TVs that have 2.1 channels. For example, the Samsung Q70R. I removed the subwoofer and connected a passive external one, and the sound improved a lot.
Man this is genius. Im thinking about buying a second hand flat tv for my dorm and my main idea was using my stereo as an amplifier but that would require extra wiring and an external selector. so im gonna plain copy your mode to use a couple of technics speakers i have laying around. Also im gonna use the external output to plug a woofer for that extra boom i need to mess with my neighbor
I wanted to do this to my tv as well, connect external speakers. But I was scared that maybe the external speakers would be too much for the built in amp, even though they're rated at 8ohm,10 watt.
The internal speakers of the Toshiba TV are 8 Ohms, 7 Watts. The external speakers are 8 Ohms, 20 Watts. I wouldn't use any speakers with an impedance below 8 Ohms, but that should be all that matters. Also I'd expect the Class D amplifier chip to have integrated overload protection and all that.
As long as you use external speakers with the same impedance as the internal ones the only potential problem you may encounter is distortion when listening at high volume or with particularly bassy content. This is caused by the television's amplifier being overdriven and, as DrCassette says, their should be in-built protection against overheating etc.
@@WaltonPete I was very surprised to find that the external speakers end up being louder than the internal ones. I was expecting better sound quality but lower volume. But I got both better sound quality and more volume. So I'm quite confident the built in amplifier will be powerful enough for my needs. But of course this depends on the model of television.
Nice mod! Dave Jones recently had found a rather new LG tv in his dumbster room and it had some really weird fault. The panel was fine but some of the processor’s needed reflowing. That did not end well, but it shows how easily modern ball grid array chips with lead-free solder can cause electronics to get tossed out in the dumbster because of their fragility.
The BGA chips are a common source of problems, especially when not cooled properly. My old graphics card failed due to bad BGA joints. I gave it to a friend who was brave enough to bake it in a kitchen oven. He actually managed to get a few more years of service out of the card after that. I am thinking about investing into a hot air rework station as that seems to be the best tool for at least trying to fix bad BGA joints. I am not comfortable with putting electronics into the kitchen oven and my heat gun when used on electronics has so far always done more harm than good.
@DrCassette, does it matter what the impedance or wattage is of the external speakers? Also, are your external speakers powered? I imagine the amplifier chip you pointed to can only output so much. Having said that, the results sounded amazing on your video.
The impedance of the external speakers should be the same or higher than the impedance of the internal speakers. The wattage is not critical. The external speakers are not powered, that is the advantage of this modification.
This should me made mandatory, as it would would simplify the setup, reduce posible audio delays prevelant with current tv to amplifier type model and the cost also. They could add a display off function just to listen to audio as well.
It is a very simple circuit, you take the speaker outputs coming from the PCB and switch them either to the internal speakers or to the external speaker connectors. To be honest, if you need a schematic to work this out, you should probably not open the TV for your own safety...
Great mod! I did the same, but without the switch. Disabled the LCD speakers. Only one thing.. there's some white noise over the speakers now. Do you know how to eliminate this problem?
It could be that the white noise is just some inherent noise of the TV's amplifier, which is now more audible because the external speakers you have connected are more sensitive than the built-in speakers. These TV amplifiers usually are not the best. Of course if the noise is dominating the audio output, there is some sort of problem.
Hi DrCassette, that plastic white connector inside the TV, how could it be turned into RCA outputs instead? if Could you pls say how? Or link to some ready adapter that would do that. i have a samsung tv and i have active speakers (not passive like in your video) that i would like to connect to my TV. Regards/Ed
Oh... you could install RCA outputs instead of speaker outputs, but you would have to keep the volume very low to avoid overdriving the external speakers. Or reduce the audio level with a resistor network...
@@DrCassette so the signal would be to strong for active speakers, i guess its the reason why i haven't seen any rca hacks. i wish i had learned some basic electronics :) thanks for clarifying, Regards
