I'm not deaf but am learning sign. the most awkward remark I've heard when I spoke about asl was, "there are different sign languages? why can't they just settle on one language? that's so inconvenient!" my responce to her was, "oh okay. then why don't hearing people abopt a glodal language?" it's not that simple!
It is completely different though. Sign langagues were invented some, what, 200 years ago? In a already modern and globalized world, anyway, so if they had tried harder maybe at least the major sign langagues could be the same.
F. OPE signing has been a part of human language since early man. if you've ever waved your hand to ask someone to come to you or pointed at something, you were using sign. complex sign was pieced together gradually over many centuries from deaf families that developed unique signs for home use. like any language it was changed and adapted to accommodate different cultures. but because it's a visual languages it couldn't easily be written down so it often became isolated leading to further change. now, those 200 years you mentioned was when french sign was documented and standardized, which later lead to asl, but that's not the only time sign was invented. it came about in many different cultures independently, unsurprisingly, just like spoken language.
Wait. Signs were used even since the dawn of mankind. Agreed. Sign language? Not really. Its true that there are some independent cases of quase-languages that evolved using signs, but the French Sign wasn't simply "documented" 200 years ago. It was born. Before the industrial revolution there had simply never been a large and concentrated enough deaf community for there to be a 100% signed full-fledged language. The other sign languages did not come out as "independently" as your comment might make it seems: almost invariably they were born AFTER the creation of centers of teaching targeting deaf people, in american case, who aimed to just teach them FSL (which failed because, after being put together all those people just created many signs and basically formed their own language. But that was after and not before the creation of the institution and the first scholars' interest in the advancement of the communication with and teaching to deaf people)
I'm late deafened and I've already experienced more ridiculous questions than i can even comprehend. "oh so you school?" "you drive? wow how does that work?" "youre deaf? wow youre really smart good for you" just to name a few. dont even get me started with trying to go places and order things. I once went to get gas and forgot to read the number on my pump, and tried to communicate that to the lady and it turned in to a literal fiasco. Not only that she charged me a full 20 dollars when i asked for 15, and i was so frustrated at that point i just said eff it.... #deafpeopleproblems
I laughed my butt off the entire video. They were all so charming and funny as fuck, I loved it! The weird part about it was, it felt like I was watching the video on mute. Like if I wanted to, I could put the audio back on and *"hear"* them if I wanted to. Like I could almost hear all their voices just by looking at them. Absolutely everything about them spoke *volumes*, and the guys in black and blue shirt had me dyin'!

We hearing people look at deaf people signing for the same reason we listen to people speaking Russian, Dutch, Japanese, French. It is interesting even if we don't understand a word of it.
more please... as a hearing parent of a young deaf child who relies on both cochlear implants and ASL. We're learning as a family, and I'm inspired by this video and want to learn more about deaf culture, and how you perceive the hearing world, our collective ignorance, and the challenges you have in 'surviving' the hearing world that simply doesn't do enough to accommodate (although it's improving). The humor you inject in this video is terrific!
Hahaha. I am hearing myself but I happen to have many deaf friends and they do all this. The part where we go to a coffee shop and it's time to leave, so we just stand outside until all the lights go off, then we use our phones and the we go to our cars. Lol. Or the party thing where they are standing, sitting down, or sitting on the floor.
one of the best i have seen in a long time. you have different ppl using slightly different signing systems along with ASL. Sign systems or modes, Signing Exact English, Pigeon Signed English, Signed English, Transliteration, did not see any cued speech but all of these were invented so hearing people didn't have to take the time to learn asl but still had a way to communicate with deaf people. TRue American Sign Language is the the only real language created by deaf people for deaf people.
So I am deaf and I can speak since I lost my hearing and wasn't born deaf. I was at an open house for my new school, where the majority of the students were hearing. I was with my interpreter since there were alot of people, but since my interpreter wasn't speaking for me like the few other deaf students everybody stated talking directly at me instead of my interpreter, and that was fine but they were mostly asking me to interpret FOR my interpreter since they thought since I was speaking she was the deaf one. The whole night I kept repeating " She can hear you, I'm the deaf one!" over and over again because I didn't want my interpreter to speak for me.

Yes! Usually if blind people don’t have audio description, some use a digital brailler (which is very expensive). Mostly DeafBlind use that. It is very convenient! More people should use captions for the deaf and (deaf)blind.
You guys are so funny! I am hearing but heavily involved in the Deaf community and I get all those ignorant questions constantly! My husband is from El Salvador (but uses ASL) and he is taking English classes so he can communicate with English speakers better. The other day his English teacher said, "It looks like he's already doing really well since he is signing in English." And it took me like 10 minutes to explain to him that you can interpret ASL into any spoken language, not just English. He did not understand. Very frustrating. Anyway, good job on the video. I feel you!!!

We need to educate people. They honestly don't know. I'm hearing however my grandson is deaf. I'm learning sign language. There are so little resources for him. I'm realizing how little. It's sad to say. But I hope to make a difference and give support to anyone that is deaf 🙏

Awesome. I enjoyed this so much. I've been signing for 10 years because my best friend is Deaf and over the last few years I've developed serious tinnitus to the point that I sometimes have trouble hearing people
So cool. I've taken a couple of ASL classes and really enjoyed them. I'm in my mid-thirties now and don't have anyone in my life to sign with so it's mostly gone to waste, but I do have a cousin living in another state who's an interpreter. I would love to become fluent and use this skill but I'm not quite sure where to start again. Probably my local community college would be a great place to start.

CIs are a really touchy subject within the Deaf community, I think. Some people get really offended by them because it is seen as "rejecting" your Deafness. I believe it's a personal decision that everyone has the right to make for themselves - but I also believe that being Deaf isn't something that needs to be "fixed". I personally would never get a CI, but I think it's wrong to reject Deaf who choose to get them as well. You're still Deaf, and you still belong to the community. It's really unfortunate that your church is so hostile toward you.
I feel bad cause I get excited to watch deaf people communicate as I'm learning irish sign language and its rare to come across people. But my sign isnt good I just love the cultures and language. I'll be more cautious about it now
I am HOH which is obviously different from being deaf but I have permanent hearing loss and I wear hearing aids and I have had so many people when they find out say, and I kid you not, "oh wow you don't sound or look deaf at all!" Because of course all hearing impairments are the exact same!! SMH

I don't know about multilingualism, but I imagine it's the same as with spoken languages: people can learn multiple languages, especially if they plan to travel abroad, but there's no "universal" sign language. Unlike with English, where you can go to lots of countries and likely find someone who speaks English, most countries have their own sign language. So for instance, if a Deaf American goes to Germany, the Deaf community there will use DGS (German Sign Language) and not ASL - unless you meet a fellow Deaf American while you're there. So to answer your last question: no, there's not one language that all or most Deaf use. It depends on where they live, where they grew up, etc.

I think many deaf people do mouth because they are around others that can read lips. If you become an interpreter you learn to mouth and sign so when you have people who are more comfortable reading lips but can't here they can still understand. Not 100% sure but I can easily find out as I have a friend who is a CODA and now interprets for a living

One time me and my sister were at the mall you know chatting while waiting in line and these 3 guys came up to us and were staring so hard i just look at them and looked back at my sister and they all looked at each other as if they were talking (not staring at us) and they stated staring at us again well these guys started TO SIGN THE ALPHABET TRYING TO TALK TO ME OMFG STOP like every word every letter omg why why do you feel the need to do that
I'm currently taking ASL 1 and this was super helpful. It's great being able to watch more complex sentances and learn which signs corralate to what in which order. I also really like learning how they percieve things, it gives me a heads up for deaf events, I hope you guys make more!

Honestly, I would walk away if someone started doing that to me. I'm deaf, but I don't know ASL and I hate it when people assume that I do.
