Who is Garden State Tortoise?
However you made it here, thank you and welcome to Garden State Tortoise. Garden State Tortoise is home to hundreds of animals from all around the world. We are a family dedicated to adventure, conservation of wildlife, and all things nature. We are a reptile rescue and breeding facility for more than ten years, offering refuge to those who need it, and working everyday to protect the beautiful world of reptiles in any way we can. Here on our UA-cam channel you will be able to join us on our animal adventures while learning how to care for, protect, properly identify, feed and even breed many species of turtle, tortoise, snake and lizard. We even work with frogs and salamanders! We hope you enjoy our videos and help us share them with the world so we can continue to educate people of all ages about herpetology.
Chris and Casey Leonese
You need one of those grabber things old ladies use to get a can of soup off the shelf to hold that go pro for plunges! Sorry for your tremendous loss. Keep following your mutual dream. Thats the most meaningful way to honor the love your mentor and dear friend imparted into your life. Is it possible to visit the sanctuary? We would love to bring our son to see this special place and the work you're doing to help wonderful turtles!
I actually do have the selfie stick for the GoPro but couldn’t find it! 🤣 Thank you so much. He will be terribly missed but I know he’d want all of us to make the most out of everything we’re trying to do.
We aren’t open for visitation but we hope to have a public establishment one day. 🙌🏻
I think OLD MEN use them too
@@poorthing 🙄
@GardenStateTortoise that would be great! I would definitely fly there to visit.
@@frozenpiper2 Bet there would be plenty of NJ people & beyond willing to volunteer & even with a nominal fee it'd raise funds to help. 🫶🐢🫶
Mwaw! Figid 😂 I appreciate this is cold for South Jersey. I'm up in Canada and it's -4 F (-20c). On the lakes we measure ice thickness in feet, and use an auger to drill holes for fishing.
Stay safe and warm out there!
That’s amazing!
It's freezing in Tennessee also, we've had 9 inches of snow and 0 to 20 degree temps for 4 days now. It's finally going up to 43 tomorrow and the 40's to 60's for the rest of the week but it's going to rain everyday through next weekend. My friend has a small pond in Michigan and his gold fish actually freeze with the pond water and come back to life when it thaws back out SMH
Holy cow 😳
i appreciate the sacrifice of the arm, but mate- buy yourself an arm extender for your go-pros xD
We have one but couldn’t find it in time to film. 👍🏻 In the end it’s only cold water.
You sayings it’s 13 degrees and cold I’m thinking that’s mild until I remember USA uses Fahrenheit and not Celsius. After converting it yep that’s cold.
Haha yep!
🥶
The brumation footage is so cool! Only you can know if it was worth it, lol. But I gotta say, I admire your dedication.
🤣 thanks!
10:25 underwater image with the vibrant orange/red fishy's 🐟 was AMAZING 😍. I'd turn it into a puzzle 🧩. GORGEOUS 🥰 image.
Love your channel. I've learned so much. 😁 You have a brilliant platform and voice to teach us. ✨☺️
🐢🌲🐢🌳🐢
Right?! Thank you so much 🙏🏻
I feel like the everything hole is a better explanation of a cloaca
Haha love that
It’s a treat to see the rare rain frog…I’m a frog and toad fanatic since childhood and very concerned about their survival. It’s very cold here in DE but we are supposed to get some “warmer” temps…not warm from this transplanted Texans perspective! It ain’t warm until it’s in the 70s! I hope all our frogs, toads, turtles and tortoises in and around the Christiana River behind us are safe. I’m going back under my “straw”…many layers of blankets…and bromate!
"I can't see it getting any colder than this"
Seriously my friend, don't jinx yourself. I'm in CT watching this right now it's 16°F with a realfeal of 3. Thank you for braving these ridiculous elements, take care and keep warm!!
Looking forward to the 50s and 60s this week!
I have access to a lake in Kentucky that I have challenged myself to swim in with temps into the low 40s. I would recommend some neoprene scuba diving gloves for future underwater videos for this time of year. Always great to see the turtles! ❤🐢
That’s awesome!
Ha! I was thinking just long rubber gloves. Wonder what happens if a turtle decides it's tasty food tho
The way you both run this channel is amazing. To have so many of us so excited about turtles is so important. Prior to watching your channel (& Kenan’s) I didn’t give them much thought. Now I love them!! And I’m starting to build out a space in my back yard to keep some Redfoots. It’s perfect here in south Florida for them and I’m only about a half hour away from Kenan so I know they’ll be fine. Thank you so much for all the great information!❤️🐢
Thank you Lori for always supporting us!
Oh, you're so lucky to live there. That will be so fun
I love your enthusiasm when it comes to your animals. It makes watching these videos even more fun. Thank you so much. You all stay warm❤️
Thank you so much!
Omg you got potato fairies! The mighty rain frg that with a roar will make the world trumble!
Omg potato fairies…that’s amazing! 🤣
As a Wisconsinite, I suggest that if you ever need to submerge your arm in the pond, in the cold, you would have a much easier time keeping your arm warm with wool gloves or mittens. Wool can keep 80% of its heat retention ability, even when thoroughly soaked. Cotton or most synthetics won't keep the heat in. Best not to tempt hypothermia.
Time to get a scuba diving sleeve for those underwater camera shots!
I actually have the selfie stick for the go pro but couldn’t find it!
I’m sure the weather where you are is far better than us in North Jersey! Luckily the coastal plain tends to avoid the extreme weather that starts once you hit the northern part of the state. I’m hoping to get down to Bass River State Forest for a hike in the next few weeks, I’ll check out some of the swamps for any turtles hiding under the water!
For sure!
Brumation (spelling?) reminds me of Bromation:
When you and your mates sprawl in front of the TV, watching the game with a chicken wing in one hand and a Bruski in the other ....
🤣🤣
I keep learning every time I watch your videos. Thank you for caring so much for these animals.
Thanks for watching them!
This was amazing, and I have to say…you go the distance. You make some impressive sacrifices for our education and entertainment…thank you.🖤🇨🇦
We're here in East Tennessee. It is currently below freezing, but going to be in the 60s by the end of the week. Curious if turtles that have been kept indoors for most of their lives can be wintered outdoors in the right environment?
It’ll be 60s here this week too. Can’t wait! Yes they can be transitioned but only if it’s done very gradually.
Also, wanted to say I'm so sorry about your friend. The entire community is lessened, but I know its harder for those who were close to him. Very hard to lose a mentor. When it is also a friend, it is doubly painful.
Very hard. Thank you so much. 🙏🏻
Me, a Canadian, hearing it's cold in Arizona: oh yeah, 4 layers for 30?
(9-21): oh naw it's fuckin cold
I don't think I mentioned before how much I appreciate the music you back your videos with. It's very original and occasionally, adorably quirky!
Dude. I worry about your back. I'll just bet that you've hurt it at least once (if not more). You must know that, by reaching into Chief Brody's tub at such an awkward angle is inherently dangerous and, as a medical provider with experience in this field, there are a million people who've said "If only I had..." *after* those injuries occur.
I think that you should add something to your priority list: a set of runners (like you see under your kitchen drawers) for the big tubs.
I know that your priority list is long, (and whose isn't, that loves what they do but *must still* risk hurting themselves for their passion?) but think about what could happen if you *were* to injure yourself whilst lifting those bad boys. Casey (bless her heart) probably couldn't run the place in her own while you're flat on your back.
The most important thing is to realise that, by lifting at such an awkward angle, you risk doing permanent damage to your back. If the tubs could be pulled out from under that shelf *before* you lift your beloved babies, you will mitigate those dangers and be assured that you've done everything you could to prevent them.
Best wishes from Seattle!
Hi, wonderful terpian/tortoise people! I love what you do & I love how knowledgeable you are. I got 2 Otis Zilla t-shirts to celebrate your accomplishment of so many subscribers. You guys are the best & we really appreciate what you do. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the amazing support!!!
I'm in Minnesota and it's 9 but says it feels like -7 I love the cold but my Red-foot doesn't and their growing so we're setting up their indoor greenhouse and currently their in a indoor bioactive.
Yikes! 😱
"So, what's actually dangerous for these turtles is the frigid air...", as Chris stands there in a t-shirt (10:47). 😂
Yep not my brightest moment 🤣
Great video as always! Glad to see all of your outdoor turtles and tortoises are brumating well. Maybe you should get a handle or extender for your gopro so your hand doesn't freeze off! 😂 Also, great to see the baby boxies are growing well! You and Casey are doing some amazing things. Keep up the fantastic work! 🐢
Thanks for taking one for the team guys! LOVE the new merch too. 🥰
Yay! Thank you!
I love all our common snappers here in Canada. ❤ they lay eggs every year on our farm and make their way into our barn yard as well! 🐢
As a Wisconsinite, its hilarious seeing yall in 4 layers in 40 degree weather 😂
🥶🥶🥶
Yeah, I would probably wait until 15 degrees to break out the longjohns. 😂
Though best not to tempt hypothermia.
Cold weather is NOT my thing! It makes me want to hibernate, too. Thanks for braving the frozen ponds for us viewers, we are sending you warm wishes. King Broady is a bit fiesty. 😂
It would be cool if you created a rainforest for the frog!
Thanks for all the vids!!🤗
I live in Northern British Columbia, Canada. In the last 2 weeks our temperatures have been down to -30 to -40 Celsius which is -22 to -40 F. Yep, you read that right! Our lakes have been frozen over for months and people are driving over them. These lakes do have turtles that live in them. I have a Greek tortoise and a pair of turtles who get some outside time in the summer but are inside the rest of the year. I would love to have a sulcata but it starts snowing in Oct here and often doesn’t stop until May so I don’t think it would be fair to one to have to live indoors for 6 months a year. If anyone has any opinions I’d love to hear it.
Love seeing Brody's progress. He's looking so well. There's an alligator snapper that moved itself into my goat's small pond. I'm not even mad she made all my goldfish but 2 disappear.
Sir, We gotta get you a selfie stick for your go-pro to stick THAT underwater! You poor guy!
I love your dedication to turtles and your videos! I have learned so much from you! I currently help care for injured/sick wild turtles with the NCSU CVM Turtle Rescue Team and it’s so rewarding! 🐢❤️
Thank you and thank you for your work’
I want my reptile room to be able to flood on accident, let alone on purpose
🤣👍🏻
I’m with you dude. Rats to winter 😫
Amazing underwater footage!
Glad you enjoyed it
It's beautiful in that pond
Really is
Lookit the HEAD on that Snapping turtle!!!! It’s HUGE😮
🙌🏻
Hey! I have a yellow belly who is 12 yers old, he never spent the winter outdoors. Would it ba safe to try it next season? I know for a fact that they can overwinter here, but I'm afraid that the fact he never hibernated might cause some trouble. ( I also have an ochita map turtle who i would like to be able to keep outdoors year around)
This is so fun to watch. My 11 year old son loves your channel and had me subscribe!
That’s awesome! Please tell him we said thank you!
I didn't know turtles could breathe under water for that long😯
Can they regulate their body temperature in these conditions?
I love coming here on Sundays and watching the newest video. Best way to start my day 😊
Yay! Thank you!
38 degrees in central Florida 30 mins from Orlando
Wow….
I am surprized you didn't use a selfie stick or something like that. Loved seeing all the outside turtles and tortoises happy and healthy. The idoor box turtles are sweet. The rain frog was as cute as a button. I come from New England so cold isn't an issue. i just temember the old Norse saying... "There is no bad weather only bad clothing." Please don't go sticking your arm in the ponds any more. You could have gotten frostbite.
We have a selfie stick, couldn’t locate it in time for the video but there will be plenty of times I have to go in the cold water for the turtles’ sake. I’ll be good. ☺️
@GardenStateTortoise I hope so.
Just wondering if you have seen Clint’s video on how he thinks snapping turtles prefer to be picked up?
Meanwhile, Otis is enjoying his brandy & a cigar by the fire.
🤣🤣
Watch out for frostbite 🥶
🥶🥶
We had below temperature 🥶
Wow! 🥶
Fun. Exciting. & Excitingly funny!
My Grandchild & I enjoyed this & the music too.❤🎉😂😮😊❤
The go pro video was so interesting - thanks to your arm for the polar plunge!
💪🏻🙌🏻
Enjoy these winter updates!!! Gotta get some merch! Thanks for all y’all do!
Thank you!
Ordered an OtisZilla shirt!👍🏽👍🏽
@17:43 -- Chief Brody gaping as if to scream, "QUINT! I want my QUINT Dinner!"
Oh, hell yeah man. Rain frogs are amazing. There's a Japanese channel that makes ridiculous rain frog content that's so funny and cute. Actually, I think there are many. That's where I discovered them first.
We are upstate NY, last week it was 50° highs, this week 7° lows ... would imagine these rapid extreme temperature fluctuations impact the natural rhythm of these animals. At what point does it become particularly concerning?
Do you have a fence around the whole GST? I guess people would steal turtles and tortoises otherwise 😞
Chris you and Casey have to send this video 2 cannon and bragged that you love the cold weather Please please please he's always **** and moaning it's cold in Florida when it's 40 degrees yeah I know it's Bedford's animals but he's complaining if he doesn't like cold so You get until show him how tough of a man and people you are Up in the north yes. and be sure to rub it in too ha ha ha thanks I hope you warm up very quickly I know that's like I was once walking my dog one time when it was minus 20 below with a wind chill of minus 60 up here in Boston about oh 30 years ago actually Exactly and the dog loved it he wanted to stay outside for two hours I finally got him in cause they let him off the leads to run around in the park Well the summer got him in I was so cold my fingers were blue literally blue didn't have frost fight but my fingers were blue. so I know what that's like Trust me and thank you for braving the cold water for us.
My adult RES went missing from her perimeter fence. She couldn't climb over it or dig under it, wasn't burrowing under the ground and I didn't have a cover over the top so I deduced she was carried off by a raptor. Do raptors ever take or attempt to at your sanctuary?
I like your videos very much and I never knew how much I would love tortoises and turtles. I have one question because I know very little about aquatic turtles/tortoises, so please bare with me. I noticed, you have what you call a Fly river Turtle, in a deep square container filled with water. Is there a reason why there are no plants or enrichment features in this turtle's tank? Am I missing something?
lol maybe heat packs in the pockets? lol Also, you're right, we cannot sleep through the entire winter as if it didn't happen. it's unfortunate.
Thanks for showing us those underwater shots! I enjoyed them thoroughly, very cool.
Have you never heard of rubber gloves? They do make them in your size. They have a kind that is meant to be used with harmful chemicals. They might help out with the cold water.
I love your videos Chris but can we get a video about testudo graeca marrokensis its such a wonderful and unknown specie!
I love your videos Chris but can we get a video about testudo graeca marrokensis its such a wonderful and unknown specie!
Wonderful turtle rescue!! Why don't you put your go-pro on a selfie stick and save your arm. 🙂
Turtles can actually hibernate in the United States😮Some varieties are not suitable in China
It is one of the great properties of water. When it gets cold and solidifies it becomes less dense and moves to the surface. This creates a barrier that is able to insulate the water below it, and prevents it from freezing solid all the way to tge bottom. I am sure your turtles, while lethargic from the colder temps, appreciate not having to try to survive being frozen. And it is still awsome that they are still a little active to find that sweet spot between too cold and too warm.
I also suggest getting a pole or holder for your GoPro to submerge it in cold water. It seems your little reptile buddies have the best take on how to live in a cold climate, don't get wet and then go walking in the freezing cold air. 😂😂
I love your videos. 2 questions that I would like answered. What do you do with the eggs after they are incubated? Do you give the to another sanctuary or are they returned to the wild? Second question do you do this as a volunteer or is it a paid position. Either way you do great work.
I'm gunna get you one of those GoPro sticks haha
I actually have one but couldn’t find it for this video 🤣
I assume you take some sort of measures to ensure the water doesn't freeze all the way through, or does it just not happen? Seems like the ice would reach down to the animals in 13 degrees.
I've lived in Florida my whole life even growing up in nature but have never seen a Florida box turtle. I used to see lots of Gopher Tortoises though.
I live in NJ and have a spring fed pond but no turtles. Are your turtles available for adoption?
U should take a large glove outside with you. The ones used for washing dishes. They're like $1-2 and it might help when you use GOPro on cold days
I actually have a stick it attached to but couldn’t find it in time. Thanks for the tip.
You could put the GoPro on a stick! And get a Grabber! Keep those hands out of the water!
I have a eastern painted turtle. She can freeze solid in the ground and thaw out and go about her day as if it didnt happen. She one few species that can. She comes from the great white north. Turtles are awesome and your ponds are awesome.
*checks* -13F to C... -25. Yup. That's a bit cold.
hello from Croatia, why can't I open your website?
@garden state tortoise - Chris! Why aren't you you wearing an Otis shirt?!
I believe you can use the go pro trip pod grip as a handle and just use that lol but love the dedication
The weather we been getting in Jersey this winter been crazy, one day it is warm and the next it is freezing
perhaps she has been turned someone else into tortoise, that tortoise was somebody.
We’ve had the exact same temps, it’s the worst!
Insane dude!
Ghiacciata!!!anche da me l'acqua del laghetto mi fa surgelare
holy crap! those red koi are amazing!
You want to see crazy weather….come to Arkansas
that frog is so chubby and perfect😭❤
So Amazing 🤩 I love your posts

yall need a selfie stick or something!
The tanks the snapping turtle in isn’t that to small?
It's 86 here in central Florida. :)
Luv it when you geek out🥰❤️
😊🙌🏻
Do you have kid sizes with the new designs?
Maybe next time duck tape the go pro to a stick or something like that…. lol. Love your channel. I’m a big Otis fan. Love that little guy. I know all about cold winters, I’m in eastern Canada. North of you guys in New Brunswick.
Oh wow well hey thank you for the support!
can we get a moroccan tortoise video please?
Awesome video!! Very fun to watch, thanks for braving the frigid waters for us ❤ Casey you’re so talented, love the merch designs
Thanks so much!!
