I witnessed a beautiful metaphor recently. Feral pigeons are common in town and all look in bad condition, scratching around for scraps from humans. Right next to this was a big fat woodie gorging on Ivy berries. Lesson: If you work hard and have the knowledge you can find what you want I this world. If you expect it handed to you then you will always struggle.
That was just so informative. They are definitely not stupid they are amazing birds. They are a challenge to shoot. I also found this book ' The pigeon shooter ' by John Batley really good book to read. Thank for making my morning coffee break pleasurable.x
As far as I’ve heard ducks and other birds have everything you said but they can’t focus as precisely as a human, and they also recognize patterns more which is why Sitka created its patterns according to that. Great vid
Great work as usual! In South Africa where I shoot the related Rock Pigeon, I've found that hiding in a shadow facing their flight path seems to work. On my most recent shoot, I sat on the door sill of my vehicle under the shade it cast over my head and was stunned at how many only saw me as I stood to shoot.
I remember my Father telling me that. "You should never wash your shooting clothes with DAZ or any of the whiter than white detergents. As you would end up looking like a blue glowing bush to a Pigeon". He washed all his shooting gear in the river Usk, that ran through the estate with an old bar of laundry soap. I always thought he was a little crazy, but now it makes sense.
He got rock doves and wood pigeons facts and figures mixed up right from word go. As someone with a Uk passport I can observe the fact that slurring and mixing up his words while shooting things like a country bumkin against UK laws is not the same as actual information. Dislike. 👎
Very interesting - of course their built-in 'sat nav' system is also amazing - a video for another day maybe? - enjoyed watching and learning, thanks 😍
As an air rifle Woodie hunter it's their vision that amazes me. I have a theory that their tiny heads help them to process it quicker. The distance between their eyes and their brains is very short. Last day before lock down I found the trees they sit in between meals... they were coming in in huge flights and sitting for 10 minutes before going back out to eat drillings. Can't wait to get out again. Not sure why you had the footage of ferals being hand fed but hey-ho. Good to see you being all enthusiastic - Know your enemy!!
What a fun video! Your enthusiasm is contagious (wasn’t sure if I should use that word, but) Makes that one pigeon (Kill it!!!!) oh so much more memorable. That was one of my best days out ever!! Thanks Jonny
Fantastic slant on the subject Jonny! I think I, like most Pigeon Shooters, already know that Pigeon have terrific eyesight - But not why! Really great explanation. It certainly opened my eyes! (Sorry - couldn't resist.) Keep them coming matey.
I'm enjoying this series of videos a lot. The most impressive body of work ever produced whilst trapped inside a sauna. (If we discount certain Swedish productions from the 70s.)
For several month back I following your video and I really love them. Mostly because what you are talking about stands here in Hungary as well (hunting - sporting rifles themes). I also love to learn about game animals, I hope you will introduce all of the game birds and mammals you can hunt in the UK. I especially curious about the non-native species, the "posh pigeon" (ring-necked parakeet) and grey squirrel (their habits and how to hunt them). And maybe that would be some fun to make cooking cooperation videos with some good English chef. Parakeet pie or something. :)
Loved this vlog. If when this is over, you need a new vocation. Have you thought of BBC learning or Children's TV LOL. TBH I didn't know a lot of that and as you say, when you stop and think. They are pretty amazing animals for that. But Jonny Dastardly as the saying goes "Catch the Pigeon Catch the Pigeon, Catch the pigeon now??" LOL.
Interesting what you call “ shot dodging”, I’ve definitely seen pidgins avoiding shot from my 12 bore on several occasions. It’s truly amazing to see them swerve around on coming lead.
Very good Jonny, the Europeans study the migratory habits they have teams of people doing counts through passes in the Pyrenees as well as shooters up there. I have shot migrating Pigeons from High towers in France (Chasse a la palombe) with a traditional system of live decoys put in the tree canopy with a pulley system that you can control from your hide also in the tree canopy,an utterly amazing experience and one I hope to do a few more times before I shuffle off this mortal coil.
@@tgsoutdoors About 40 but It's a different game! I couldn't understand why the guide wanted me to shoot 36 gram 4's but then I saw the height and speed of them.......my ratio was certainly different from here........
I’m ok about it just trying to figure out why they would of fly that close to hit me with its wing I love birds iv got 2 nests in my back a robin nest in the wall an a pigeon nest now to, is there anything I can put out for them ?
its not as such slow motion we wouldn't appear to be going at one third the speed they'd be able to see and process that we had moved 3 times quicker than us its only become slow motion if it was slowed back to the speed of a human eye. interestingly chickens also see faster than the human eye
I agree pigeons are amazing They can definitely see shot and they can definitely see airgun pellets , they can avoid sub 12ftlb speeds but not quite FAC speeds but they still see the pellet and try moving . At shorter ranges they don't see them as they're too quick. Some of the aerobatics they pull while hide shooting are quite something.
As you Brits seem to say incessantly, "Brilliant"! Actually they are very remarkable birds. You didn't touch on their ability to navigate. And "stupid", well, believe me, that's relative, too. So, how do you prepare them for the table? Are British farmers concerned about the tons of metallic lead that you're dumping on their fields? Nothing like heavy metals in the food supply to enhance the intellectual abilities of the inhabitants of your island.
Would just like to say thanks for your vids during this torred time , keeping us entertained, to a degree 👍👍

Hilarious !
Shot dodging buggers, I’m getting the ShotKam on the Beretta once we’re out of lockdown.
Loving the vids, thanks.
One of your best none gun related video's keep them coming 👍👍👍👍

What would you recommend, wood pigeon or Browning 525...

I am in agreement with your father. Not enough to wash them in the Test but enough that they are washed separate.
@@tgsoutdoors I have never bothered with weird beliefs such as this.
My hunting cloths don’t get washed very often to be honest
With a multi million pound budget BBC 'Countryfile' (anti-country life) consistently fails to produce content as engaging and as informative as this.
Really makes you wonder what agenda they are working to? I just glad thyre notpolitically biased! Or something??

Best video title this lockdown. Lol. 🤣
My wife always quips " he's gone shooting at pigeons" not " gone shooting pigeons"!
Lol

I went shooting at pidgeon son Saturday, they won

The internal sat nav is just a conspiracy - they just use google maps

“Pigeons are the ultimate predator” lol
Took someone long enough to pick up that slip. Now just imagine if they were ten times the size and ate humans!

They don’t dodge George Digweeds lead even at extreme range😉
There is absolutely no chance that pigeons can dodge shot.

Any ideas if the government are still issuing licences at this time ?
White bands on arms. 😀

Crap a 8 ft. Lead or more ?

Of course you can. Just be sensible
