  • In 2016, Billings, Montana, beat out the likes of famed mountain towns like Jackson, Wyoming and Bend, Oregon to take home the top spot in Outside's annual Best Towns contest. Why exactly did it win? We spent a weekend there to find out.

    The video didn't even mention how Billings is an hour away from a really great mountain range in the Beartooths with a ton of fishing,hiking, and backpacking opportunities. There is also Red Lodge Mountain for people who like to ski.

      more people, more trash, more policies....You can see it here in Calirado, how Colorado went from a great outdoor mecca to over flowing with people that basically destroy trails. Our trail system can sustain the amount of use we're seeing here in CO. Then you have transient population just skyrocketing where they are leaving trash, human waste etc. I agree with your statement, sometimes certain places need to be left alone, it's what makes them unique.

      Agreed. Diversity for the sake of diversity is such a strange political goal. If I travel to India, I'm not mad because 99% of the people I see are Indians. That'd be proposterous. They're all Indians because their ethnicity has dominated that geographic place for so many years. Same goes for "low diversity" (read: white) areas of the United States. They're white. So what? Anyone is welcome. But there's nothing wrong just because the majority ethnicity is white in that particular region.

    Can anybody that lives or has lived in Montana tell me how the summer heat is. Does it get humid allot up there because I HATE THE HUMIDITY. I really don't mind the heat as long as its dry but that damn humidity like we have here in Jacksonville Florida, I cannot stand it. Can anybody tell me about the summer weather in Montana? Is it a dry heat or humid most of the time?

    • @hotshot0476
      @hotshot0476 6 років тому

      William Santiago the heat in summer is pretty dry, average high end temp in summer is 90-95 degrees, average middle middle is85-87 or 88 degrees, and 80-82 or 83 is relatively low in summer. But we get lots of snow at least compared to Miami florida, Florida is near ocean wear water is which causes humidity. Montana temp wise is like a slightly lowered scale of Arizona but with snow in winter, its actually considerably, really dry here. Feel free to message if you have any more questions.

    • @hotshot0476
      @hotshot0476 6 років тому

      So if you were to take all the snow that fell this winter season, put it all together, and it fell all at once it would be 103 inches deep. That's our current record for snow. And in billings if you travel west for 1.5-2 hours you'll be in a mountain range, and in winter, on the beartooth pass in the mountains in Yellowstone national park, the snow will reach like 25ft high on both sides of the road, that 103 in all season was just billings, and the mountains here some have snow on them all year long. And their emagnificent, and you can do skiing and stuff like that.

    • @hotshot0476
      @hotshot0476 6 років тому

      Just checked and the Montana records for hot and cold are, -70 degrees below 0, and 117 degrees. But it never comes near either of those commonly ever.

      I live in Helena (western Montana) and humidity is pretty nonexistent in the summer! If it’s “humid”, the humidity is like 40% (like right after a heavy rain, which is rare). Most of the time humidity is like 5-10%. It makes it so that the 90 degree temperatures are very bearable (I’m from Iowa, so I know humidity). Just remember to bring or buy lip balm!

    I lived in Billings and did Security there 2016/2017. I wouldn't want to live there again. Partially due to the amount of homeless downtown. Plus didn't find anything special about the place. I moved there from out of state to better my life. And I will say this though I got a job within a week of moving there and was doing the best in my life at that point. Full time job, my first vehicle, my own place. Went to the gym daily. Enlisted into the army from there. I've lived in a few other states before moving to Montana and pretty much had zero luck with anything. And Montana has been the best state I ever lived in. Out of about 6 total. If you absolutely have to go live in Billings go to Billings Heights. It's the nicest area compared to downtown and the west end of town. Also it probably has the more milder winter snow compared to the rest of the state. Although I'm the type that prefers more snow.

    I have family that lives in Billings and I think its funny how they try and portray Billings as being a "big city." They always remind me how of how much like Denver it is, but its really not even close! Billings is just an ugly industrial cow town right on the crow reservation. I don't feel the real urban, "big city" vibe in that town. I recommend either Bozeman or Missoula. They have a big city feel, and always have a lot going on in those towns. They're going to outgrow Billings eventually though. Plus, the mountains in Bozeman and Missoula are to die for!

    • @SuperCatman
      @SuperCatman 6 років тому +1

      A) we all know Billings is small, but it is the largest city in Montana. We call ourselves a "little big town".
      B) We aren't on the Crow Reservation, although the Crow nation is very close
      C) Both Bozeman and Missoula are significantly smaller than Billings. Neither have more than 100k people, both are college towns, neither have a significant amount of large city factors, like gourmet dining, high quality inns, fair transportation, etc. Neither have tall buildings, where Billings has the tallest building in Montana, and has plans to possibly build even taller structures. Billings is older, and has received more international attention, such as Norwegian royalty staying at the Northern Hotel circa 1920. Trump, Obama, Clinton, Kennedy, and many other political figures have been to Billings, most not going to other cities. You have no point. Billings is superior to any other city in Montana.

      So...Billings reaches 100k and all of a sudden that makes the town special?
      Billings, MT population: 100k
      Missoula, MT population: 70k
      Great Falls, MT population: 60k
      Bozeman, MT population: 40k
      Billings, MT metro population: 180k
      Missoula, MT metro population: 170k
      Great Falls, MT metro population: 90k
      Bozeman, MT metro population: 108k
      Looks to me like Billings isn't much bigger then other Montana towns...Now, lets compare Billings, MT to actual cities like Boise, Spokane, Green Bay, and Salt Lake City. Spokane metro population: 600k Salt Lake metro population: 1.2M Green Bay metro population: 312k Boise metro population: 664k Billings, MT metro population: 180k. You see? Maybe Billings is the biggest city in Montana, but Billings, MT is just another town in Montana. Billings size compares to none of these cities.
      Just because Billings is wasting 34 million dollars on a typical building, doesn't make it a big city. Plus, I'm a Montana native, from the Great Falls area, and I find Missoula and Bozeman to be more vibrant with a more "big city" feel then any other towns in MT.
      Actually, you're wrong about Billings receiving more international attention. It wasn't too long ago, in the 70's, when Great Falls was titled the biggest city in Montana, and was actually bigger than Billings is today. Thanks to Great Falls, and the Anaconda Smelter Co., Montana had the most thriving economy providing (at the time) one of the nation's highest paying jobs, bringing foreigners and out-of-stater's to the Electric City to work. Now, let's talk about presidential visits in Montana...Kennedy came to Great Falls memorial stadium, along with Eisenhower, Johnson, Bush and many more. And yes, even those campaigning to be president such as the Clinton's and Obama in back 2008, and most recently on July 5th, 2018....Donald Trump Jr., and President Trump himself, held a rally at the Four Seasons arena at the Montana ExpoPark. Plus some movies were filmed in Great Falls: "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" starring Jeff Bridges and Clint Eastwood, "Holy Matrimony" and the "Slaughter Rule" starring Ryan Gosling, and a couple more films and even TV series like, "Heartland"....I kinda think Great Falls has gotten more international attention then Billings...don't you think? ;)
      What I'm saying, is that Billings is just going to repeat the same history as Great Falls. As of today, the growth rate in Billings slowed down at 0.98% from it's previous 1.5%. Great Falls growth rate now 0.05% from it's 1960's 41.14%. Now, let's compare today's Billings and Great Falls growth rate to Missoula and Bozeman...Bozeman's growth rate is a 5.2 (above the national average), and Missoula's growth rate is a 2.86. What is the main driving economy in Billings? Answer: oil. Since the oil revenue is dropping, so is the Billings economy. That means the Billings population, just like Great Falls, will start "flattening" or slowing down.
      As of right now, Missoula and Bozeman are the fastest growing towns in Montana. Because they are both huge University towns, they are developing a tech scene. I've recently read that Bozeman is one of the fastest growing tech hubs. And yes, they will eventually surpass the two Montana "rustbelt cities", Great Falls and Billings. Now this being said...what's so special about Billings Montana?

      JESUS SAVES ISA 43:11:12 I agree! The only reason they’re building a useless 324 ft building in the town is just to show off and be cool. Locals in fact do portray billings to be bigger than it really is. So what if billings reaches 100,000 ppl. The metro population in billings is no bigger. Not even SLC has a building this tall, but yet SLC economy is way stronger, and houses many major corporations in they’re skyscrapers like Goldman Sachs and many more. The proposed “skyscraper” in billings is just being used as a hotel and apartments lol! What a terrible waste of money! 😂
