I don't think this mess was all Zeb's fault, as editorial and the higher ups are known to tell the writers what to write. Zeb is genuinely a pretty good writer. His ant man, Hellions, new mutants, new warriors, elektra, and carnage books show this.
8:04 As an addendum to Chip’s quote, in the Off Panel Podcast episode released in February of this year, he said he’s more open to doing the Spidey run now given his experience of writing the main Batman title. Where he just doesn’t engage with the audience in social media, and just writes his story.
If there's one idea I'd want to purge from Spider-Man discourse, it would be that Spider-Man and Peter Parker exist at odds with one another. Peter Parker does not, in fact, need his life to get worse with every success he has as Spider-Man, and good things happening to him don't always have to come at the expense of other people. This gets into a common reading of Across the Spider-verse, where a shocking number of people think that Miguel is unequivocally right and Miles needs to suck it up and let Spot kill his dad for the sake of the multiverse. When Miguel's Spider-verse map is a critique of the spider-man story formula being overused and uncritically accepted.
Hailee is NOT a good representation of that, she's literally one of the WORST. She's literally a NON character with superficial traits. She's black, a woman and disabled...and also an activist cause you can't have a black woman character without making her an activist these days😐 We have no idea who her family is. What she does in her past time BESIDES art acitvism. What she likes and dislikes, loves and hates. This character isn't even HUMAN...she's EMPTY. And that's from someone who enjoyed her introduction in the Miles game and was curious as what it would've done since she is NOT a comic character But she's just BLAND and so emotionless she has like 2 NPC emotions aks Smile and Confusion. And people who are deaf tend to be VERY emotive to help them express
The same thing goes for the Symbiote storyline, we’re been getting the same plot beats for the past 30 years. First meteor comes crashing to earth, Peter gets the suit with new powers, makes him more aggressive, he goes to Dr. Connors for help and then gets rid of the suit and then boom venom. In the 90s show they introduced it, the Raimi movies popularized it, later being adopted in Spectacular Spider-Man, web of shadows, ultimate spiderman show, 2017 show and more recently insomniac Spider-Man. It’s a breath of fresh air to finally have adaptations of Spider-Man that doesn’t rely on popular interpretations of the character but instead more in line with comic elements of the character, but no fans will complain and say it’s not real spider-man. Just look at the discourse, revolving Edge of Time Spider-Man and how people say he’s a terrible depiction of Spider-Man all because he had a moment of crisis of wanting to stay in the future to what he believed would protect his loved one with the running joke being “you’re saying the lives of a few billion people are more important than my loved ones” but not adding Peter realizing he was wrong for thinking that
I feel like that's usually the case with most fandoms and communities on social media where it's usually normal rational people, but then there's a handful of unhinged, toxic, and sometimes dangerous weirdos who get the attention they seek and make everyone else look bad because of it.
This is why Chip zdarksky, when asked if he'd ever write for the amazing spiderman comic, he quickly said "hell no". 7:56 and you pointed that out before I finished the video.😂😂😂😂
I love that every UA-cam essay that comes out nowadays about why Amazing Spider-Man sucks comes to the conclusion of “just go read Ultimate Spider-Man.”
Imagine being a casual Spider-man reader and running into Marvel's hate letter, like what did *I* do? Me personally, I stopped reading the character's books and never went back
These people used to get bullied and were perceived as the good guys in 80's movies. I think we know what happens when you give these people the safety of anonymity and an army of like-minded cretins. They will ruin the lives of innocent people to get what they want and still consider themselves heroes. I'm not saying bullying is good, to be clear. Just that these people weren't the good guys they were perceived to be in movies.
The last time Spider-man was good was when he was a competent adult. Like working at a high school with likable supporting cast. Or finally running a technology company with a likable supporting cast. At this point it just feels like slander to make him soft headed.
A small amount of people being jerks on X doses not justify how bad and inconsistent the mainline Peter books have been for almost 20 years and editorial has a part to play in the toxicity just look at Nick Lowe's stub stack comments and how they handle the death of Miss Marvel it's a 🤡 show
Spider-Man fans: Hates Paul because he’s an embodiment of Peter’s suffering Also Spider-Man fans: Getting pissed off at seeing Peter grew up and became a dad in Across the Spider-Verse because Peter didn’t suffer enough.
Who hated Peter becoming a dad? Most of the fan base loved him and mayday, and are actively asking for writers to make Peter being married to MJ more common. Plus, the current ultimate spider-man run is outselling asm by a landslide, and the main selling point was that Peter’s a grown man with a wife and kids.
@@Snake_eyes0 But the Drinker spead that idea first. Most people refer to him and his fanbase when some say there are "fans" getting mad that Peter grew up and became a father in Across The Spiderverse.
My hatred for this run comes not from Paul but rather the fridging of Kamala Khan as it's far more emblematic of the midlife crisis strangling both the Spider Office AND the Spider Fandom due to their unwillingness to grow up and cede the nature of "youth" to newer voices...
What is blood talking about? People BEEN complaining about putting Peter through a perpetual misery cycle since one more day. Clone saga even! Nobody with sense wanted peter and MJ's mareage deleted, or his body hijaked by doc ock, hell even the miscarriage was some bullshit. Way i see it, Paul was just the latest in a long line of events to make Peter "relatable" because the higher ups either think getting married and starting a family somehow isn't, or are still salty about Gwen dying and sinking their ship. Can't blame the fandom on that, even if lotus was ass.
Spiderman is why I don’t read comics weekly or keep up with whatever current anymore. Tired of the consistent no change or character arc. Also, it ain’t that deep. Paul just some self insert for Well’s fantasies.
Batman fanboys🤝🏽 Spider-Man Fanboys Insulting & denigrate other characters in order to elevate their favorite (Specially with Superman & Iron Man, Spider-Man fanboys have an intense hate for Iron Man, as much as Batman fanboys have it with superman)
In Batman's case, you could also blame DC themselves with that one, given how much comics/movies they have of Batman being portrayed as unstoppable Plot Armor Man.
You’re right, we should just leave the billion dollar cooperation alone. They obliviously live tougher lives than the rest of us. They are the ones who own the own the rights to Spiderman and get to say how the story goes but the blame should be on us.
As much as fans are to blame for their online behavior I think some blame does indeed go to the writers/editors (not just Wells, he is a cog to a bigger problem) who have been writing Peter in this stagnate stage for years since OMD. Its why Nick Spencer's Run is generally liked/loved by a lot of readers because it seemed that for once we were getting some progress or at least a step in the right direction.
From what we've seen of this new "8 Deaths" run, Peter is gonna be kissing Felicia at some point. So suffice to say the thing with what's-her-face has gone up in smoke already.
I like Spiderman because he's an inspiration to me to be the best I can, to get back up when down, and to value my relationships with my friends and family. Been that way since I was a young child. And he doesn't have to constantly suffer to get that point across.
I don't understand how hitop films is relevant or why you think thats the turning point in spider-man fandom? like the reaction did not feel too different to superior spider-man initial toxicity and that dated nearly half a decade before homecoming. (not to even imply that was the change, idk). But even if we dont pinpoint the catalyst for the toxic fans, the relevance to hitops video essay I dont see much in this own video essay
This is the Oppenheimer for Spider-Man Editors and Writers to justify their awful decisions on the Spider-Man character and many other franchises to come. We are the Ouroboros stuck in the cycle of destruction. Unable to fix what was broken, we now have to recreate.
Where are the fans that want COMIC Peter Parker to suffer? I’ve genuinely have heard overwhelmingly the opposite. That they want him to grow and succeed etc. I’ve heard the complaints about the movies and games, but never those complaints geared toward comic Peter Parker.
I still don’t see how fans are holding you back from writing whatever you want. Sounded like scapegoating to protect their fragile little egos from being hurt by the fact they have no legacy, outside of trolling readers. They still won’t have any stories held up alongside the goats but have fun dunking on the worthless chuds of the internet that don’t even buy comics.
Blaming Hitops for the creation of Paul is absurd. No the real issue with Marvel editorial and Joe Quesada thinking that Peter need to be unhappy. They were the ones that wanted to relive the 70s era of Spider-Man comics. They wanted to stunt Peter’s growth. Every spider-man fan hated when the marriage was undone.
There are many girls who are much better in every sense of the word than Mary Jane Watson. The main thing is that there are many such women, namely Gwen Stacy, Felicia Hardy and Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel). So Peter Parker has a lot of girls to choose from as his lover for life!
Hm...I have mixed thoughts on this I can definitely understand your point and there really is a group of the fandom that are bad apples (and I do appreciate you bring that up) but I can also say from experience that a lot of people have been tired of the misery fest in 616 for a while now; which is partly why Across the Spider-Verse's Peter B. and Ultimate 2024 have been received more positively Paul just exacerbates the problems 616 had when Nick Spencer at least tried to fix the characterization of Peter and MJ.
But that one small part is making the whole fandom suffer. Idc about anyone else but spidey needs a break man. I have seen several comics where he faces many where he suffers to much otto sinister 6 goblin morlun, mephisto mysterio all of this stuff happens to him and he cant catch a break. And now all the good thing he had accumulated have gone ahead and said him good bye. Can you really agree that the whole fandom should see him suffer because of a few loud mouths who cant keep shut. My hero academia one of my favourite animes has the worst fandom i have ever seen but does that make it so that everyone in the fandom suffers due to those who are at the front. I know the worst is upfront and the writers has to face them head on but does we or Spidey really deserves paul
Claim: “Spider-Man fans want Spider-Man to suffer” Reality: the comic book with Peter Parker married to Mary Jane with a couple of kids literally revitalized comic book spider-man. “Ship of Thesus” when is a character not the same character. That’s the issue of modern adaptation, they change everything to the point of it being pointless. Instead of the “Ship of Thesus” being slowly reconstructed to look and function the same way as the original it’s turned into something antithetical to it. Like turning the ship into a car, it just sinks. Sure they are both vehicles but one can tread water better.
It’s lot more complicated then that but short version I think it’s editorial who wanted Peter Parker Spider-Man and Mary Jane being separated in the main marvel universe because there ego won’t allow the character to grow up, which is just sad and depressing and makes no sense in my opinion.
I think that this video is very well made, but I disagree with the central premise. The hate that gets targeted to Zeb Wells (and Nick Lowe, and whoever else works on Spidey) comes from a place of people wanting to see Peter happy. But their version of happiness only has one solution: Peter is with MJ. There is no other version of Peter that can be happy. And therefore, Paul is suddenly the main enemy to Peter, despite all his actions being kind ones. Despite him paying off some of Peter's medical debt, despite him forgiving Peter for trying to kill him, despite him inviting Peter over to try to create some normalcy in their relationship. All of that is seen negatively, as Paul being smug, because he's "in the way" of Peter's happiness (MJ) I also don't think Wells' run was bad, and I think in a few years time, away from all of the heightened negativity and people reacting to single panels out of context, people will see that. Or maybe they won't because they'll never be able to look past Paul. I'm glad that Ultimate Spider-Man exists and I think it's a very good comic (albeit a slow one), but I don't think it's doing anything significantly better than ASM. It's just different.
You fucking hit the nail on the head when it came to the point about Spidey suffering and fans' attitude about it. Just wanted to put this here midway through the vid.
Paul is a character who shouldn’t even exist and personally for me what we needed is Peter Parker Spider-Man and Mary Jane to have there marriage have there child mayday Parker spider-girl alive and kicking in my opinion.
@@EdehEmmanuel-d7r indeed and personally for me Spider-Man peter parker story ended with my favorite series spider girl mayday Parker the daughter of Peter Parker and Mary Jane and her carrying her fathers legacy and being a great sister to her brother benji Parker.
Married Spidey is not boring though. Spider-Man was pretty damn good from 1987-2007 when he was married for 20 years in the comics. Michelinie run with McFarlane and Larsen are peak. We also had JMD/JMS run, and classic stories like Kraven's Last Hunt, The Child Within, Marvel Knights, and the controversial but interesting Clone Saga. I mean, the best Spidey stories of all time are mostly married Spidey stories.
There are several other stories and superheroes who manage to be entertaining and interesting while also having a married and relatively stable home life. Why is Peter Parker some magical exception? His daily struggles have always seemed complementary to me, less about him suffering and more about him making the most out of the moral dilemmas he encounters. Because that's what is actually at the core of who Peter Parker is, it's not the suffering, it's the willingness to do and be better in the face of what the world throws your way. He doesn't need to be down in the dumps consistently to make that happen. Hell, wanting him to be there all the time is how we get One More Day or another Paul. Let the character grow, let the character change and find a new goddamn challenge. We've been there and seen that cycle of suffering for years now, want to revisit it? Pick up a show or run from that era.
How dare fans of multibillion dollar company complain when company undoes their favorite characters progress. It's the internet, so-called "death threats" aren't a big deal to anyone but the most cowardly.
This was a really made and explained video. But one part you kinda left out is that in😊 Spectacular Spider-Man, there's a whole plot line where he wants to help May with her bills and even works for a loud mad man.
You don't like Paul because he terribly written character, who has no meaning and sense to be in this story, who just a walking plot device and has one reason to be here, and it's just only be a wall on the peter and mary jane's love and relationship. I don't like him because he wears a glasses. We are different.
5 minutes in, u said high school peter didnt have to worry about finances in the comics. He did bro 😭 why do u think bro took pictures of spider man Good video though and i do agree with a lot of the points. I tend to avoid comics now only reading the classic runs. This capitalist nightmare of constant selling of comics makes it so that eventually we'llgo back to the status quo which is why im glad yhe ultimate universe seems to be doing everything it can to combat it
yeah good point! i more meant it wasn’t his MAIN focus in life, whereas in something like Spider-Man 2 or some later comics, a lot of what drives him/majority of his personal conflict comes from these very real working class struggles
I never understand this concept that editorial or writers hate spiderman. It makes no sense why write a character or characters you hate I feel if you got assigned a character you could express to person who gave them to you how you cant write for this character because your disinterested in them and woukd rather write for another one. Also the joke about "Writers hate Ultimate spiderman and Across the spiderverse for having peter be hwppy and have a family." And that makes Zero sense it seems liek the fans are too emotionally attach to this character that its gotten toxic and even destructive. I dont see batman,Punisher,Daredevil act like this.
Everyone loves the new Ultimate Spider-man, but I hate it on principle because I started reading comics with the Original Ultimate Spider-man, and that sir is NOT Ultimate Spider-man. Uncle Ben doesn't even have long hair!
Tbh the new ultimate universe is more like 616 than 1610 (old ultimate universe) sooo it kinda makes sense why uncle Ben would look more like his 616 counterpart than his 1610 counterpart but still tho R.I.P long-hair uncle Ben you beautiful bastard
Honestly man I don't think I need to read another 616 Spider-Man story again, I've realized that I got all the best stories pre OMD and I should be happy with what I got, Ultimate has my attention but I don't think I'll ever read 616 again, I already wasn't keeping up anymore after Superior Spider-Man but every so often I'd check in and I've just been disappointed over and over again, so the answer for most fans that just want that JSM or even the McFarlane style of writing to return just stop buying the fucking comic.
The United Kingdom, Republic of Mexico, and European Union need to ban Twitter (aka X) like Brazil did make Elon Musk shut up and live like a crazy rich hermit in a estate like Howard Hughes did, save democracy from Billionaires.🎉
I agree some fans due suck, i dont like miles because they gift him powers like if thr guy was the most special boy ever, and hardly give him drama specially outside the comics, I dont like marvels spider man 2 due to the storyline that rushes to venom and requieres thr villains to have armies for the gameplay to work, and the absolute disrepect for peter's apparent maturity because that is trown out the window just as the game begins, and the fucking fridge scene, I love the holland trilogy because it shows peter growing to be a man, and yes he sacrifices stuff but he can build back up
3:13 it’s because much like AI art trivializes actual art made by humans, “The Spiderverse” made being a reasonable/old school fan of spidey a nightmare. It effectively turned “Spider-Man” into a lifestyle brand deluding it instead of strengthening the IP.
It’s situations like these that threaten to make me hate fandom culture in general Spider-man fans deserve Paul just like Star Wars fans deserved the sequel trilogy they are owned by a billion dollar corporation only concerned with profits so give them a chance when they actually allow creators to be creative instead of whining about how it’s not exactly like the slop you were fed as a baby (Also I like Hi-top a lot as a creator even if I disagree with some of his opinions on films)

“God forbid any adaptation focus on black people or women”
TALK TO THEM
Hailee is NOT a good representation of that, she's literally one of the WORST. She's literally a NON character with superficial traits. She's black, a woman and disabled...and also an activist cause you can't have a black woman character without making her an activist these days😐
We have no idea who her family is. What she does in her past time BESIDES art acitvism. What she likes and dislikes, loves and hates. This character isn't even HUMAN...she's EMPTY. And that's from someone who enjoyed her introduction in the Miles game and was curious as what it would've done since she is NOT a comic character
But she's just BLAND and so emotionless she has like 2 NPC emotions aks Smile and Confusion. And people who are deaf tend to be VERY emotive to help them express
Look Paul is cool and all but can we talk about how Peter hasn't paid his rent for a decade? How does he still have a place to live?
It's very simple, really. The rent will be paid when _you fix this damn door_ !
@@DrakeBarrow Bro should just ask Bruce Wayne for a loan. I'm sure he's willing to help. He could ask Tony but you know he's kinda dead.
I love that every UA-cam essay that comes out nowadays about why Amazing Spider-Man sucks comes to the conclusion of “just go read Ultimate Spider-Man.”
as a spidey fan, it is an inevitable conclusion
Honestly, I'm not mad at Paul. It's MJ. Because of Wells MJ - 616 is what MJ - Raimiverse and MJ - 94 are: *For the Streets.*
A small amount of people being jerks on X doses not justify how bad and inconsistent the mainline Peter books have been for almost 20 years and editorial has a part to play in the toxicity just look at Nick Lowe's stub stack comments and how they handle the death of Miss Marvel it's a 🤡 show
Bro really just blamed the fans for how bad Spider-Man is when the fans have been asking for Peter to stop suffering for the longest of times
Ultimate spiderman reboot is our saving grace but the good times.....Makes one fear the bad times that could come after.
Spider-Man fans: Hates Paul because he’s an embodiment of Peter’s suffering
Also Spider-Man fans: Getting pissed off at seeing Peter grew up and became a dad in Across the Spider-Verse because Peter didn’t suffer enough.

My hatred for this run comes not from Paul but rather the fridging of Kamala Khan as it's far more emblematic of the midlife crisis strangling both the Spider Office AND the Spider Fandom due to their unwillingness to grow up and cede the nature of "youth" to newer voices...
Wasn't this when she was being reworked into a mutant lol
What is blood talking about? People BEEN complaining about putting Peter through a perpetual misery cycle since one more day. Clone saga even! Nobody with sense wanted peter and MJ's mareage deleted, or his body hijaked by doc ock, hell even the miscarriage was some bullshit.
Way i see it, Paul was just the latest in a long line of events to make Peter "relatable" because the higher ups either think getting married and starting a family somehow isn't, or are still salty about Gwen dying and sinking their ship. Can't blame the fandom on that, even if lotus was ass.
We are Paul.

Being on twitter was the first red flag
“I’m tired of a Spider-Man who doesn’t have problems, doesn’t have relatable problems”
Getting broken up with is a relatable problem…
Spiderman is why I don’t read comics weekly or keep up with whatever current anymore. Tired of the consistent no change or character arc.
Also, it ain’t that deep. Paul just some self insert for Well’s fantasies.
No he isn't. If Paul was a self insert, he wouldn't be so bland, uninteresting, and boring. Paul is tool by editorial to make the fans angry.

Spider-Man+Batman enjoyers: 🗿🗿🗿
In Batman's case, you could also blame DC themselves with that one, given how much comics/movies they have of Batman being portrayed as unstoppable Plot Armor Man.
You’re right, we should just leave the billion dollar cooperation alone. They obliviously live tougher lives than the rest of us. They are the ones who own the own the rights to Spiderman and get to say how the story goes but the blame should be on us.
We need to find the footage from the Spider-Man panel from this Years NYCC b/c at this point it’s lost media
I don't want Peter to suffer. I'm suffering. Let him be happy with Shay Marken. Marry her, have kids, *win.*
Now I am become Paul, destroyer of the Spiderman fandom
They don’t exist this guy is just yapping

They still won’t have any stories held up alongside the goats but have fun dunking on the worthless chuds of the internet that don’t even buy comics.
Blaming Hitops for the creation of Paul is absurd. No the real issue with Marvel editorial and Joe Quesada thinking that Peter need to be unhappy. They were the ones that wanted to relive the 70s era of Spider-Man comics. They wanted to stunt Peter’s growth. Every spider-man fan hated when the marriage was undone.
What in the Hi-Top films thumbnail

It's because it's incoherent schizo drivel loaded with fallacies.
I had heard about Paul through a friend, so I just simply decided not to read the run
In the comics he was in college.
Nope. He was in high school during Stan Lee's run
@Americanbadashh Yea but he graduated high school in ASM #28. Then he went to college in ASM #185. So my bad
Hm...I have mixed thoughts on this
I can definitely understand your point and there really is a group of the fandom that are bad apples (and I do appreciate you bring that up) but I can also say from experience that a lot of people have been tired of the misery fest in 616 for a while now; which is partly why Across the Spider-Verse's Peter B. and Ultimate 2024 have been received more positively
Paul just exacerbates the problems 616 had when Nick Spencer at least tried to fix the characterization of Peter and MJ.
PAUL STANS STAND PROUD!!!!!
3:05 STFU Send It To Paul Insted Patition for His Death
Claim: “Spider-Man fans want Spider-Man to suffer”
Reality: the comic book with Peter Parker married to Mary Jane with a couple of kids literally revitalized comic book spider-man.
Wasnt Paul hated cuz he was a self insert? Idk i dont follow comic dramas
It’s lot more complicated then that but short version I think it’s editorial who wanted Peter Parker Spider-Man and Mary Jane being separated in the main marvel universe because there ego won’t allow the character to grow up, which is just sad and depressing and makes no sense in my opinion.
Paul isn't a self insert. If he was he'd be more interesting and the writer would put more effort into his character.
@@mttylerdurden9 that too
Damn, you really teach how read comics.
So Zeb did this in purpose, only to “punish” fans?
To be fair, the mj jawline situation that happened was a tag team match between the synthetic man fandom and the weird part of the spider man fandom
Anyone still buying ASM is responsible for this. I stopped at the end of Spencer's run. Only get Ultimate now.
All of that is seen negatively, as Paul being smug, because he's "in the way" of Peter's happiness (MJ)
I also don't think Wells' run was bad, and I think in a few years time, away from all of the heightened negativity and people reacting to single panels out of context, people will see that.

Ultimate Spider-man is only good because Hickman is a GOAT. Married and happy Peter be a boring read for most other writers

He did bro 😭 why do u think bro took pictures of spider man
Good video though and i do agree with a lot of the points.
