    Honestly, anyone else getting sick of waiting 3 weeks to a month for an update on the reno, only get mostly chit-chat
    and sponsor info? I mean how much actual time out of this 17 minute update was Current Reno footage? And videos LESS frequent? Once every 3 weeks to a month, at around 17 minutes? And you are going to space that out further? Unsubscribe!

      Hey Kevin, if you listen to what I say, that's exactly why I'm going to slow down editing for a bit....to make sure I capture all the footage I need to. I don't think you are wrong at all that there has been less action lately, and that is what I'm working to change! If you want to unsubscribe, it's up to you....but I'll just say I've kinda felt the same recently and been frustrated I've been missing shots of things happening because I've been tied up editing and can't be two places at once. And I'm taking actions to make sure that doesn't happen anymore, so the vids are up to where I'd like them to be :)

      I bought a very small house (62,000 sq in on the main floor) right at the same time, last April, with everything to be renovated, only the stonewalls are still standing. And even though many friends around me made the jump, I still underestimated the amount of work. We're at about the same stage, getting into electricity, network and plumbing... But ModM here is building a huge place, so I definitely appreciate the amount of work he's putting in. I had to hire a stonemason, but drafting the plan and organising everything still takes a huge amount of time. Props to him.

    As a professional video editor 1.) it's been phenomenal seeing your channel grow and this project fleshing out and 2.) make sure you selectively edit your footage as you shoot it, even if you don't plan on fully editing it until weeks or months later. I've managed a lot of long-term projects and they turn into nightmares unless you have the footage organized and trimmed to the important or valuable sections.
    Catalog the hell out of your footage if you aren't already. Make sure everything you shoot gets reviewed shortly after filming and put everything in a timeline to mark up. Once you get the workflow down, it should only take you like an hour or two a day to go through your footage. It saves so much time on the backend because you have a mental log of everything you've shot, plus you've reviewed all that footage and already have some rough edits in place. I have seen other editors literally give up on projects because they get sent dozens of hours of footage and nothing is organized.
    I'm sure you already have a system in place so don't take this as me telling you what to do. I'd just feel bad if I didn't share my experience with someone that could benefit from it.
    Great content as usual and I can't wait to see this building finished!

  • @yuGtahT
    @yuGtahT 3 роки тому +454

    When it comes to content, I think people just want a good story. This is a good story and every video is like getting to turn to the next page. So consider this, maybe good content is the journey and not just the final product...even though UA-cam puts a lot of pressure on creators to focus on click-through rate and eye catching thumbnails.
    At the end of this project you could make a long form video where you summarize the whole project, start to finish. I think the instant gratification of the thumbnail combined with the longer video would satisfy the requirements of the algorithm. And I like seeing this channel grow and getting to watch you do cool things.

    • @modustrial
      @modustrial 3 роки тому +86

      Thanks! I hear ya....and totally agree, story is the most important thing. Whenever people getting into UA-cam ask me for tips....I tell them story, story, story. For me, I've been slower to put videos out because I wait until I have the story that I think is compelling...often that means waiting for something to happen so a video can feel complete. I'm in awe of folks like Casey Neistat and Peter McKinnon who seem to come up with something interesting daily. I've tried, but those videos just haven't worked... I end up taking those quick bits and including them in a later video that feels like something I would want to watch, if that makes sense... oh, and I'm definitely planning a longer wrap-up video at the end! :)

      Honestly, it's just coordination of all the different ppl and trying to capture footage of contractors without getting in their way. The subcontractors are great, but unfortunately my Spanish and Polish are pretty awful, so there is sometimes a language barrier that makes it challenging to figure out what is happening when, so that I can be sure I'm getting the footage I want. We've started to get in a groove now tho... the guys are having fun watching the videos and as they are watching they are figuring out what things are good to film, and even starting to make suggestions about things that could be interesting. That's also part of me putting editing on back burner for a bit, so I'm just there and available to film and react whenever the good stuff goes down! 😀

I totally understand your need to step back a bit on the editing to concentrate on the work and filming the quality you want. I'll watch your videos whenever you upload. Happy 2021

    I think my favorite aspect of watching this series vs. your other content is the fact that you’re constantly growing and challenging yourself. I love hearing you say, “this is my first time trying this.” Also your editing and video style in general is constantly getting better. We may have to wait a little bit for each new video but I like coming back to your page and seeing 2-3 videos to watch back to back. 😂🤷🏽‍♀️

    It's cool to see how different the building styles are in the USA and Germany. When you build a new house here, you usually build it with a basement and the turnaround / ceilings are made of concrete. Everything in the USA is made of wood. That is why it is severely punished if you park next to a water hydrant with your car. Greetings from cold Germany 🙋🏻‍♂️🇩🇪

    This would be the perfect time to put in a hidden valuables storage area somewhere. I've always liked the Idea of having a package with magnets in the vents and using another magnet to drag that package out of view of the vent entrance. You also have complete creative freedom with that storage area, I mean you could just build like a self defense weapon holder in a wall. I like the salt gun because it's non lethal and can create zones someone cannot travel through, Imagine being a thief and moving through a cloud of pepper spray, you would panic and leave.

    The first thing pops in your mind when you quit your daily job is: "WTF! What am I gonna do?" Well that's the first, then you realize you have to make effort tirelessly thinking about your plan A-Z. There's no plan A or B or Z, it is what it is because when you quit your job you knew it is right because you have passions that you want to do in your future, that's the positive thinking you need to endure. That's the goal you want to attain, to follow your passion and what you are good at. And now you did it with a HUGE SMILE! We always have to make decisions when time like this comes, that you are willing to do the hard work. If we are out in the "system" we can do anything but we need to work really hard and meticulously because TIME is very demanding.(I don't want to say TIME is our enemy/weakness) On some situation like mine thus really have to think it clearly before I quit ( I do have a 6 day job), but I can do it what ever it takes, step by step, changing my routine, changing my perspective, changing my lifestyle, right now I'm starting again to do my passion even though I have a daily job (that's my fuel for my passion). And seeing you, content after content, I think you are an inspiration to all! You change my perspective to do what I love, What I always LOVE! Hoping that you do well this year and stay safe as always.

    A word to the wise. Insulate everything you can! This is especially nice for the bedrooms and bathrooms but do all the rooms if you can afford it. Do the ceilings, walls, and under the floors if you can. We have lived in a home where we insulated everything and it was amazingly quiet and very comfortable. We now live in a home that only has the envelope insulated and you can hear absolutely everything and even though the HVAC system is better the temperature fluctuate drastically inside. Hopefully it was already in the plan but you didn't mention it so just wanted to recommend it. Thanks for all the great content!

    Since March, I've been following this renovation, and honestly, I always get so excited whenever I see that you uploaded. Your videos are so amazing and informative. I was actually inspired to go on a binge of your old videos because of it. I also find your renovation videos much more interesting than other plain renovation videos because often times we don't hear the specifics of what's happening in the other ones. I have learned so much about what goes into making a house and all the steps along the way, and you seem like a really cool dude. Feel free to take your time and get things set up for you. I know that I won't mind waiting. The sheer amount of things you are doing always amazes me, and I wish you all the luck in this upcoming year.

      thank you! There is enough drama in the world today, so I try not to add to it unnecessarily. I definitely share my mistakes so others can learn from them, but I think its possible to do that while also keeping it positive :) I always hope my videos can be an escape from all the drama surrounding us for 15-20 minutes -- if I accomplish that, then I feel like I'm doing my (very) little part to make the world a little bit nicer place to be in :)
