That's something that I think almost nobody got about the movie. This song is the traduction of their love to words. When they went to the museum, there started their "City of Stars", their love. Remember when they broke up, Mia said she would love him forever. And when they see each other 5 years later, their love is still alive, allthough they can't be together because their lives took different paths, but in their heart, they are still together with that song being their connection.
Almost no one got it, but this song is the film itself. City of Stars was more than a song, was their love in a way that could last forever. That's why there is that montage of what could've been if they were still together, because they never stopped loving each other, and in their hearts, they all would still be living their "City of Stars"

Screw How Far I'll Go! This really did deserve this victory! I was too quick to judge but now it truly is one of the most beautiful movies I've seen in my life! I still can't get over the fact that Can't Stop The Feeling got nominated for best song. I'm glad La La Land pounded Trolls to the ground with this song.

This sounds like a song you can hear when you walk into a New York bar in the 40's-50's. I can just imagine them around the piano with soft light hitting them in just the right angles.
I feel like The Greatest Showman had replaced this movie and taken all of its glory. While everyone was freaking out about how magical TGS was with the circus theme and unique characters though, I always stayed attached to La La Land. Even though I can’t remember much about it, the visuals and musical numbers were just so pleasing. I’ve always preferred a more realistic story and what really snagged my heart was the ending. Not every story ends how people want it to. It’s just reality. What was important was the characters’ growth. Even though The Greatest Showman had a unique story, it will never pull me in like this movie did. The opening makes my heart race and their beautiful relationship makes me almost not want to be asexual, lol. Man, just thinking about this music makes me want to cry. I haven’t watched it since it first came out and I would do anything to see it once again..
Well, both had soundtracks worked on by Pasek & Paul haha. I have to agree, while The Greatest Showman will possibly always be my favorite musical, La La Land was incredibly unique and emotional. I was upset that Mia and Sebastian didn't end up together, but in a way, I think that's what made the concluding scene so perfect. I find that movies with bittersweet endings are always the most memorable.
