- What's a tippet ring and how do you use one? Tippet rings are small polished metal rings used for fly-fishing leaders that allow you to tie on a new tippet without losing any material on your leader so you don't shorten your leader every time you tie on a new tippet. They are also great for tying together two sections of greatly different diameters, or for tying nylon to fluorocarbon. And the cool thing is you never need to tie a blood knot--all you need to tie is clinch knots!
Can I ask you a question since there is a video about tippet rings? So imagine I have my leader. It is heavy near my fly line and it is X4 near my fly. Good idea for using tippet ring here is to connect a tippet material to the leader via the ring when the thick part of my leader is gone. SO the question is - how to find out the place where the thick part of the leader becomes "medium" part of the leader? Thanks in advance.
Best part of this "how to" was keeping the ring ON the snap while tying it to the leader.. :o( oops! I usually use the smallest swivel I can find in place of a ring. When tying on the tippet I leave a whisker of the tippet tag for adding shot if needed. I'll have to try the rings some day. Thanks Tom and Orvis.

I can't believe I can find the answer to this after searching the web....but I've fly fished for over a decade for large steelhead and have never once used a leader. I've always used straight tippet from fly line to fly.
In your expert opinion, why do I even need a leader to begin with? What are the benefits (if any) to using a leader vs. all 6-8 feet of tippet material?
