Say Jake. First off, thanks for your first video on how to covert Harbor Freight tanks. You detailed the process so well that I had no issue accomplishing it. Secondly, out of the gates my tank leaks air like a sieve, and as your noted, it leaks around the lid.. I appreciate your solution to the problem, but I have a better way to attack it. I removed the ridiculous gasket that comes with the tank, then I mixed a batch of silicone rubber and poured it into the channel where the gasket once sat. It works like a charm, without extra clamps like you had to do. I am able to hold air up to 60 lbs. I just give the clamps a good twist with a wrench and it’s good to go. The silicone that I used is Smooth On brand. Thanks again.
If anyone tries pouring a new gasket like I did, I have one tip. You might want to run a bead of calk around the channel wall that is welded in place. That metal lip is poorly welded and silicone leaks under it. It didnt leak a ton but it was a little annoying.
Thanks. I am a beginner on all turning, but have discovered I am pretty good and what a great way to meditate! I am getting my first pressure pot and was intimidated. Your video released lots of the anxiety I had.
Turning is very relaxing.. I’m glad I found it too!! These harbor freight pots are good to start with but if you have a few extra bucks to spare, there are some already ready to go amzn.to/3SvCidR
I took the plunge a while back and set up my HF pot. Still need to do some casting. I tested mine and it went from 51 to 47 in a 12hr period. I’m sure if I use it a lot, I won’t be so lucky. Lol. Your pressure pot video will always be gold in the UA-cam videos! 👍
I have an older Craftsman paint pot I got at a rummage sale for 2 bucks I converted. It gave me some leaking issues and I thought about the way to put a wheel/tire on a vehicle. You alternate the tightening pattern. Previously I would just randomly tighten the wingnuts in any order. As I began to alternate tightening the wingnuts angled, like putting on a wheel, it became easier to get the lid tighter and eliminate leaks.
Great video!!!! I've been in commercial construction for years. Retired at 48 - project manager/eng. I think I'm 53 now??? And want to start all kind of things. One is with expoxy pours.... I'll keep watching you and try to learn !!!
Enjoy your video's , After some thinking I found that all you need for fittings is a the reducer one T, safety valve direct fit also with no regulator works , still working on the leaks
Very true.. I leave the regulator on because of the leaks.. I just leave the air on and it stays at the right pressure. I’m glad you enjoy the videos. 👍👊
Used and old trick on my harbor freight pot , took a small pump sprayer added some soap , squirted it all around and found a leak where the safety valve is welded in , you wouldn't think it would leak , I put some JB weld on it and so far it is holding pressure , thanks for the reply appreciate it
I had such an issue with mine after 2 days, i returned it, and got another as a replacement. the toughest part is evenly tightening the lamps on the pot, seemed to make a huge difference in holding pressure consistently. so i do like if you were tightening lug nuts on a wheel....1/2 turn one side, 1/2 turn opposing side and so on. I had more of an issue with the gunk near the relief valve, had to gob some teflon tape there. Thanks for posting Jake, i really thought i was the only one having an issue holding pressure and the leak issues!
Rob Kerfoot Thank you for watching Rob.. I figured people would think mine just works perfectly all the time.. I also figured if I was having issues then so were others..
I've been tempted to do this but am concerned about it leaking. Almost all videos I've seen that convert a Harbor Freight paint pressure pot to a resin casting pressure pot say that it WILL leak. It seems in your demo the leak was primarily the lid. Can a better gasket be added to fix that problem? Can a bead of 100% silicone around the lid create a better seal? I can clamp it to my bench like you did but would like to have it so it just doesn't leak at all and is mobile. Thanks for sharing your video! 👍🏾
Thank you Greg.. After this video I bought a better seal for the lid. It’s linked in the first comment.. as far as leaking .. if you fill it to 55 and overnight it’s at 50.. I wouldn’t consider that a big deal.. as long as it stays over 45 psi until the resin becomes solidified. The new seal was a night and day difference from the original.. it was way better.
Sand the top of the pot smooth. Silicone glue the gasket into the lid, so it has to seal on only one side, and always put the lid on in exactly the same spot. Mark it and match it. Lubricate the the threads on the clamps, and where the clamps dig into the lid to make tightening them easier. Seal your joints well... and stay under 50 PSI. At least ... this is what I'm doing. Thanks for all your advice!
@@bryangoboom Did you glue the gasket in the lid? Are you tightening the screws two at a time opposing corners back and forth until nice and tight? What pressure?
@Darryl Edington glued it in last night and yea I was doing that. I took a wrench and was able to get it to seal better. Waiting for the silicon seal to cure then will test again tomorrow
Petroleum jelly softens dry rubber gaskets so they can form a better seal. We use it on refrigerator gaskets where I work. It does eventually wear the gasket away little by little though, so I wouldn't use it on gaskets that aren't already old and dry or you'll probably have to replace them sooner.
Got the Harbor Freight one A few months back. Never did get it to seal well. Sent that little hummer back and got A 5 gallon one like your 10 gallon pot. Super happy with the bigger pot, holds like a champ!
there should be a gasket around the top channel this helps with sealing when you tighten the the lid down. I have a binks for spraying contact cement and you can also get liners. Baer supply
So I noticed that it's very important to tighten the clamps down simultaneously. Opposing sides a little bit at a time, then use the wrench a bit. If it leaks around 50 psi identify where and try to tighten the clamp down by hand or with the wrench a bit.
OK from a beginner who has never used a pressure pot, but really wants to use one, where is the air coming from? Do I need to purchase an air compressor too???
👋 Great update to the original video. I used your first video on this to build my Harbor Frieght Pressure Tank. Been using it for almost a year now and still works great. I actually got it to a point where it hasn't leaked in over 6 months. I've been casting so much lately, I am considering getting a second one.
Great video Jake . I remember the instruction video of the Harbor Freight pressure pot , then the better 5 gallon. Stay well to your family and you my friend
I've tried using an electric car tire pump to pressurize it and it seems to put pressure in, but it leaks from the large black pressure valve through the part you turn to let more air in. Seems like the valve might be bad? Can I get away without using the valve if I'm using a tire pump?
I’ve never used a tire pump and I recommend using a air compressor with a tank the size of the pot to fill the pressure pot effectively.. some people run the pot without a regulator. You fill to your desired psi and shut the inlet valve.. I use the regulator.
I've had my HF tank in box for over 3 years because I'm too nervous to use it, but I'm genuinely tired of not leveling up my resin quality. These tiny bubbles upset me. Thank you for another video. I did watch the first one you made but still wasnt comfortable.
Have you ever casted any thing in resin for which reason that you did not put in a pressure pot because I tried into a without a pressure pot at all you can’t see the bubbles because of the pigment I put in I think there are still bubbles underneath because as I started to turn it on my lathe I ended up with chips out of the resin I was wondering if you ever experienced that
Jake, why can’t you use the vacuum pot to get bubbles out of scales??? The reason I ask is you use the vacuum pot to suck all the air out off wood to stabilize wood.
Good video, what pressure pot do you use now? Thanks, I’m looking to buy one. Probably worth spending the extra money and get a pressure pot for casting resin
I'm new to resin & do have problems with air bubbles even though I torch or heat gun. Sometimes I want to cast & sometimes I just need to coat a painting I use KS resin. Does it matter what resin you use & how do you know how long to have the resin in the pot before it starts to set up when you want to pour it instead of casting?
Hello Deb., a pressure pot helps with any kind of resin. If you have something you are coating and it won’t fit in a pot.. you have to use a torch. If you have problems with bubbles.. make sure you are stirring the epoxy gently and not introducing air bubbles yourself. When you use a pressure pot, there’s always a demold time on the instructions you use. Keep it in the pot for that long.. I hope this helps.
Thank you for watching the video.. The max pressure is on the tank and there’s a regulator and pop off valve on the unit. I show how to adjust both on this video and I say to go 10psi below the max.. I’m not quite sure what else I could say about safety.. plz let me know if I’m missing something?
Do you need the elbow fitting? Also could you please make a video about which air compressor and hose to get? Thank you so much for the great content!!
People have done this many ways.. with and without a regulator.. and such.. if you see a way to do it without the elbow.. go for it. You don’t need a big compressor to fill this pot.. a small compressor will do just fine.
Great video bud. I even remember asking how to adjust the pop off. I was doin it right but that thing just wouldn't budge lol. I just bought a new one. Only a few bucks anyhow. This channel along with ur friends definitely got me started down the road of resin. Thank you!
Lol.. I got tons of questions on that pop off valve.. I would have made a video just for that!! I’m glad I could help get you into resin casting.. That’s what it’s all about!! 👍👍
I have a leak at the joint under the gauge. I’ve taken it apart, wrapped the threads with Teflon tape, added a liquid thread sealer to the threads, and reinstalled but still leaking. Can you stop a slow leak without taking it apart again? Like maybe using hot glue or something similar?
Very good video , I learned a lot from it. Thank you. I’m new to this and the video helped immensely. Question, if I use a silicone mold and pour my epoxy resin into my mold and put the mold in the pressure pot , will the air pressure distort my silicone mold at all ?
If your silicone mold has air in it and you put it in a pressure pot, it will deform.. depending on how much air is in it, will determine how much deformation
Would the Mold Star Slow 15 silicone work well in a pressure pot or do you have any recommendation for a suitable mold making silicone/rubber? Since I’ve heard you’re not supposed to put a soft silicone in a pressure pot. Thank you! I just made this pressure pot and it works great! :)
You can use whatever kind of silicone you want in a pressure pot, as long as you degas it first with a vacuum chamber. I have used fast setting silicone that doesn’t need degassed and it works fine in the pressure pot.
I just purchased the same pressure pot and made the alterations as shown in your other video. I’m putting air into the pot to set the regulator and the safety valve. The valve keeps popping at about 38lbs. I believe I’m bottomed out on the adjustment by screwing the slotted ring clockwise. It’s down so far I can’t get it to turn anymore. Still popping at 38lbs ( I’d like to get it set at 50lbs). Am I doing something wrong?
I’m working in my home so need to buy a compressor, I’m completely new would you mind giving some advice on how to choose a compressor. Would my mini airbrush compressor be sufficient? Thanks so much for all the information!
I just got my harbor freight pot because of how you made it look so simple to convert in your video!...Question however.... the regulator T screw where you let in air ....does it normally leak air out of there also?....I'm having that .....from a small existing hole right above the T crew area of the regulator ....I'm trying to figure out the best position on it to keep it at at least 50psi...and the Manuel just says clockwise for more and counter clock for less....I'm trying for just above 50..like 55 but it wont let me
Thank you for watching the videos.. of you have that to where it regulates to 50psi or so and the hole in the regulator leaks.. the regulator is faulty.. you will need to take the entire thing back and exchange it or buy a new regulator.
I JUST TOOK SOME BOLTS AND EVERY TIME I TIGHTEN THEM I SIMPLY USE MY IMPACT DRIVER AND IT NEVER LEAKS BEEN DOING HER FOR 3 YEARS THAT WAY NOW AND SHE DONT LEAK 🤣
I bought one of these today. did everything in your videos correctly, except it is slow leaking from the weld around the inlet. On the lid. Is there anything I can do?
@@JakeThompson Thanks for the quick response! Yeah I think I will because I already don’t trust it haha it looks really janky. Hopefully I’ll be all set up and ready to cast tomorrow eve! Love the channel btw!
I just completed the transformation of the HF pot to a casting pot per your video. Everything seems fine but there is one air leak I can't get fixed. It's at the regulator valve. If tightened it as much as I can, both on top of the pot as well as the nut under it. I've taken it off and retaped it and still it leaks. I out 50 lbs of air in and in about a half hour it has dropped to 20 pounds. Do think caulking on the top of the valve would help? Thanks for any advice you might have.
There’s some stuff called liquid Teflon, it works pretty good.. but I would leave the air hooked up so if it leaks the regulator will keep it at 50 psi
I have a leak just pop up from the regulator. There is a little hole there that just hisses air out at a slow level. On the internet I got intel that said the diaphragm is bag and needs replaced. I've been looking for a video on how to change it to no avail.
Good video jake....very informative! Im still unsure if i want to do resin. (Ive got so much wood to turn, i dont know when id have time!) But, i might in the future! I still learn something new every time i watch one of your videos!
Anyone who buys one, make sure to check if you get one that has NPT and compression style fittings. Mine did, don't put an NPT where there was a compression fitting. I shouldn't have to say that but there's some tutorials on UA-cam for this tank that you will end up doing that if you follow them, theirs might have had all NPT, or they just didn't know better. Pull the gasket out of the lid, and check for weld splatter. I had huge ones that had to be knocked out, that's where my initial leaks came from. Also, the lid is thin. Over tightening the clamps will actually warp the lid, and possibly make it harder to get a seal next time. 4 star pattern, 1/4 turn at a time, hand tighten should be all you need to get a seal if you have smooth surfaces and a good gasket. In 24 hours, my tank will go from 60 to 55PSI. Which is mostly from my safety valve according to a bubble test with soapy water.
Another informative video. Question...I'm going to start with making pen blanks. What are the best molds to buy if I only want to do three or four at a time and use in the HF pot? Thanks again for all the great advice.
You can use them but if they were not de gassed or a pressure pot wasn’t used while they were made.... they might deform under pressure.. I use silicone molds all the time
Hey Jake! I’m having issuers with the Teflon top sealing in one spot. Any recommendations? I’ve done it about 4-5 times with varying amounts of Teflon top and to no avail.
Hi, Im not a turner or caster, I just like this stuff. This was a very informative video and if I was to do casting, your tool videos would be a great help. Thank you.
just getting into pen casting and maybe a video , but working on my pressure pot atm, but can you tell me what kind of camera your using to shoot your videos? thank you, I've learned a lot from watching your videos

I just bought the same pot last week and the only problem that I have is that the air pressure valve goes off when it his 43lbs? How can I get it up to 55 Lbs? I have no leaks.
@@JakeThompson Thanks. Must be a faulty one. I just ended up replacing it with a ball valve since I have a regulator set on my air compressor to 50psi.

I’m finding adjusting that pop valve to be a huge pain. It’s loose enough to be leaking without fully popping at like 30psi but I can’t seem to screw it in any tighter without just chewing up the brass
@@JakeThompson yeah that's what I'm going with. Just not happy to have to wait til the end of the week to be able to use the thing when I spent the day today building it. Cheap import tools- what can you do?
How long does it take while it is in the pressure pot? I'm sure one factor is how much is inside the pot, but what if, say, 4 pen blanks are in the pot at 50 psi? Really enjoy your videos! Keep them coming!!
If it’s alumilite clear slow you can take them out of the pot in 2 hours... the smaller the amount you pour the longer you need to leave it in there.. it takes longer for the chemical reaction to take place with a lesser amount of resin. Resins or epoxy with longer working time, I just leave overnight
Someone needs to make a video on a pressure pot basket that is level. Not sure if it’s called something else. Whatever the thingy is that goes inside the pot to place moulds on with a handle so people don’t spill resin through their new pressure pots.
@@matpolson4411 There are mold carriers out there that fit in these pressure pots.. You just need to put something flat in the bottom of the pot and level the pot. 👍
Be careful tightening it. I have destroyed one of the clamps from tightening it too much. What I'm going to do to fix it is get a 3 inch clamp for about $4 and drill a hole in the bottom of it to use as an additional clamp. I do worry about it not being strong enough but I'll see. I'm also gonna get gasket material and see if I can tighten it less
Vacuum pumps are great for two scenarios. 1: It isn't a burning inferno where you are, 2: long pot life silicon/resin. Degassing and pressure potting will return results that are just about perfect every time and removes almost all risk. Reason I mention weather is potlife goes down in heat, and the vacuum can create some serious heat especially if it is already hot to begin with.
Really glad I watched this before I went out to buy the pot from Harbor Freight. Rather not spend $100 on something with a bunch of headaches when I can spend a couple to a few hundred on a better pot actually made for resin, and made in the US instead of China.
Ok I keep running into the issue I can't adjust the valve for release pressure. It won't even turn no matter what I try. Idk how you made yours move so easily. Sorry to bother!!

You have to have a resin with a long working time to be able to use a vacuum chamber. The resin I use is ready to set up in 12 minutes..
@@JakeThompson thank you Jake. I watch all of your UA-cam videos and have learned so much. Thank you again
how much vertical space is there inside? a have a small statue mold that's about 8 inches tall. would that fit?
There is about 9 inches top to bottom in the pot.
Good video, what pressure pot do you use now? Thanks, I’m looking to buy one. Probably worth spending the extra money and get a pressure pot for casting resin
I have this one now and I love it.. ua-cam.com/video/S6tvPsPEIQ0/v-deo.html
I know this video was made a while ago, but would you ever consider doing a video on safety with these pots?
I would take it back and get another one.. if it’s a tiny slow leak. I would just leave the air on..
@@JakeThompson Thanks. Leaving the air on may be the way to go.
Hello Mark.. if you followed the directions exactly how I showed.. it’s probably a defective pop off valve.. might have to exchange it
Ok thank you. I’ll get a new one
I’m working in my home so need to buy a compressor, I’m completely new would you mind giving some advice on how to choose a compressor. Would my mini airbrush compressor be sufficient?
Thanks so much for all the information!
You need a compressor with a tank as big as your pressure pot tank..
@@JakeThompson ok! Thank you so much!
Dang it....I figured that was the case.....thanks for the reply! 👍👍
Great info. Now I’m just going to buy a pressure pot that is already made for resin. Seems like there is a lot less stress involved.
Here’s the one already set up that I have. ua-cam.com/video/S6tvPsPEIQ0/v-deo.html
I JUST TOOK SOME BOLTS AND EVERY TIME I TIGHTEN THEM I SIMPLY USE MY IMPACT DRIVER AND IT NEVER LEAKS BEEN DOING HER FOR 3 YEARS THAT WAY NOW AND SHE DONT LEAK 🤣
👍👍
I bought one of these today. did everything in your videos correctly, except it is slow leaking from the weld around the inlet. On the lid. Is there anything I can do?
Take that one back and exchange it. That’s what I would do.
@@JakeThompson Thanks for the quick response! Yeah I think I will because I already don’t trust it haha it looks really janky. Hopefully I’ll be all set up and ready to cast tomorrow eve! Love the channel btw!
@@viridianwarrior Haha.. I know the feeling.. glad you like the channel. 👍👍
@@JakeThompson Thanks. I'll try that.
Can you use the same pressure pot to put a vacuum pump on to use to stabilize wood? I would think so but I'm new to this
It will work, but you wouldn’t be able to see in the pot when you are using vacuum..
I have a leak just pop up from the regulator. There is a little hole there that just hisses air out at a slow level. On the internet I got intel that said the diaphragm is bag and needs replaced. I've been looking for a video on how to change it to no avail.
Normally people will just replace the regulated if something is wrong with it.
Hi! Maybe a dumb question but is it bad to release air pressure through the ball valve area?
You can release air from the ball valve.. but it’s slower than using the pop off valve.
Hey. Michael. Can't wait to try this.
Hello Michael! Thanks for watching!!👍👍
Gr8 video Jake, you have given some ideas how to solve the leaks in my pot! TKS
John Wallace Awesome John!! Glad I could help!👍
I use vise grips in between hold downs
That works too
Good work, Jake. The HF pot is a solid starter unit. It's a great economical way to get into the game.
Absolutely Robert.. we both know that’s right.. lol 👍👍👊
Good video jake....very informative! Im still unsure if i want to do resin. (Ive got so much wood to turn, i dont know when id have time!) But, i might in the future! I still learn something new every time i watch one of your videos!
Awesome Dave!! Keep turning that wood... that’s super fun too... 👍👍👊
Thanks! This is useful info.
Very welcome. 👍👍
could you link an air compressor that would be compatible with this? also a tube that would be compatible if air compressor doesn't come with it?
any air compressor and hose would work really
Chad Voller good stuff!!
Can't you buy a pressure pot all ready to use with out having to buy other parts & assemble or change all those things?
Deb Beneman You can.. but it’s lots more expensive so this is just a cheaper option.
also, do the molds that you use in one of these have to be degassed molds? thanks
It’s always better to degas silicone.. but for penblanks it’s not as big of deal because I make them oversized and cut them down
Thank you for another great video just starting to cast just got my Harbor Fright pot today nice timing great minds think alike Semper Fi Jarhead
Thank you Jody HooRah 💪💪
Great video great info
👍👍👍
👍👍👍
Another informative video. Question...I'm going to start with making pen blanks. What are the best molds to buy if I only want to do three or four at a time and use in the HF pot? Thanks again for all the great advice.
I just bought a silicone pen mold from P-Town Subbie... it fits right in the pot. Or you can make your own from HDPE plastic.
Hi! I have silicone molds would it be okay to use in a pressure pot?
You can use them but if they were not de gassed or a pressure pot wasn’t used while they were made.... they might deform under pressure.. I use silicone molds all the time
Hey Jake! I’m having issuers with the Teflon top sealing in one spot. Any recommendations? I’ve done it about 4-5 times with varying amounts of Teflon top and to no avail.
Look for liquid Teflon .. works good for me. 👍
@@JakeThompson appreciate it! I’ll try that 🤙
Hi, Im not a turner or caster, I just like this stuff. This was a very informative video and if I was to do casting, your tool videos would be a great help. Thank you.

For deep pour resins is a pressure pot needed?
Gerrant Mata It’s not needed but you need to pop bubbles with a torch or heat.

I just bought the same pot last week and the only problem that I have is that the air pressure valve goes off when it his 43lbs? How can I get it up to 55 Lbs? I have no leaks.
In this video I go over how to adjust the valve.. if it doesn’t help.. the valve needs replaced.

@@jamescanning5647 awesome.. I’m glad it works now. 👍
when i'm filling my tank for the first time it's making a pinging noise... should i be worried? i haven't gone over 50psi.
Mine did it too the first time. No problem.
@@JakeThompson awesome thanks for the quick response. i figured it was everything "settling" expanding a bit.... creaking lol
Do you know where to buy a better pot?
I put a link in the description. 👍
How do you fix the pull release? I tried using a screwdriver to tighten it but it still releases pressure around 40 something psi.
MuffinMan0521 I show in the video how to adjust it. If that doesn’t work, then it’s a faulty pop off valve.
@@JakeThompson Thanks. Must be a faulty one. I just ended up replacing it with a ball valve since I have a regulator set on my air compressor to 50psi.
Thank you sir. the pop off valve was a pain in my ass

Issue. Much appreciated man
Please help why my safety pin goes off at 20PSI and how can I fix that
This video shows how to adjust it.. if it won’t adjust properly.. it needs replaced
I’m finding adjusting that pop valve to be a huge pain. It’s loose enough to be leaking without fully popping at like 30psi but I can’t seem to screw it in any tighter without just chewing up the brass
Sometimes they need replaced from the start.. cheap stuff..
@@JakeThompson yeah that's what I'm going with. Just not happy to have to wait til the end of the week to be able to use the thing when I spent the day today building it. Cheap import tools- what can you do?
@@katjoe1974 totally agree
How long does it take while it is in the pressure pot? I'm sure one factor is how much is inside the pot, but what if, say, 4 pen blanks are in the pot at 50 psi? Really enjoy your videos! Keep them coming!!
If it’s alumilite clear slow you can take them out of the pot in 2 hours... the smaller the amount you pour the longer you need to leave it in there.. it takes longer for the chemical reaction to take place with a lesser amount of resin. Resins or epoxy with longer working time, I just leave overnight
Good video very informative. Just getting started in resign could use all the info I can get. I follow Kim and Pohl Barn, I will follow you know.
Awesome!!! You will be there in no time 👍👍
Does anyone know if this would work for cement in molds??
Thanks for the info Jake
Very welcome Eddie!! Thank you for watching!!👍👍
My name is Carl, and I made it to the end...lol.
Bear Creek Woodworking Hi Carl!! 👋👋 Thank you!!
👍👍👍
The price between the 5 gal. California and the 2.5 gal. Global is fairly close. Is the Global a better brand?
Bear Creek Woodworking I feel like they are about the same.. both are going to be nice pots.
@@JakeThompson Thanks for the infor Jake.
Thanks for sharing Jake I thought vacuum would be simpler didn’t consider the time factor glad I didn’t waist my money on a v pump 👍
Bart Giles Thank you for watching, I’m glad I could help ya out!! 👍👍
Karkarov 👍👍
✋🏼I don't resin cast. I just enjoy watching the videos of wood turning and other maker type things.
Awesome Joyce!! Nothing wrong with that at all!! 😄👍
Really glad I watched this before I went out to buy the pot from Harbor Freight. Rather not spend $100 on something with a bunch of headaches when I can spend a couple to a few hundred on a better pot actually made for resin, and made in the US instead of China.
