1- this is a great film, I loved it. 2- Why the heck would a city be designed so the train has to stop for car traffic lights??? an average speed of 7mph for a train is ludicrous!
This is the part that drives me insane. If it didn't stop at the traffic lights, as slow as it is, it would be bearable. The whole concept of a express train only exists because the previous T can catch up with it mainly due to the continuous stops. The fact that the timing of the traffic lights is atrocious just adds salt to the injury.
Great production value, you definitely deserve more subs. As a Boston local, it was really cool learning that our trains account for 98% of all american rail collisions
It’s wild to think that I could cover less distance on a train than than just running. This is basically why I bike over transit most of the time in my city.
@@WetCatGG I mean you’re not wrong The 4/5 takes about 3 1/2 minutes go to between 14st and Grand central (1.4mi) so assuming that you don’t mind risking death via skipping red lights, you can go the speed limit (25) and get there right about the same time.
This is exactly why the MBTA should consider building a perimeter train that would go around the city to connect the airport with stops such as Sullivan Square, East Sommerville, Harvard, Packard's Corner, etc., all the way around to JFK/UMass. True, it would be a huge capital project, but it still probably wouldn't be as bad as The Big Dig.
I completely agree. Why should I have to go to park st to switch to red line if I want to get to Cambridge from BU. Or like Umass to BU going red line then switching to green line. A Umass/JFK line that goes through Dorchester into Roxbury, through Allston then Cambridge then Somerville then East Boston makes sense
Yea, that was weird to hear, especially since the fixed slow zones are acknowledged later in the video. The given number (65) is still badly out of date. This probably means the author recorded the VO in August, when that number was valid. The T has made great progress, considering. (Edit: no shade to you, Matt, this is still a great doc) Here's hoping for the ongoing maintenance plan 🤞

Also, I appreciate that you were very real about the problems with the T as well as the steps they’re taking to fix it. I hope to see more videos from you! Love seeing awesome content from a Boston creator!
i keep coming back to this video, it's great! now every single time i've considered waiting for the T i think about this video just decide to walk it lol
the B branch is the perfect selection for this sort of race. Riding it more at the moment, since I'm injured and can't bike, and wow is is slow compared to much of the system
Good video, however, the green line is the slowest of all of the MBTA “metro” lines. I’d be curious to see something similar against the red line or the orange line or even the blue line.
And, specifically, the Green B line is the slowest. I lived on the D line for many years, which does not share right of way the way the B, C, and E do, and I always felt vaguely miffed that it was painted with the same broad brush as the other Green Line branches. :-) But I'd be interested to see whether the result holds for the C or E lines... I suspect the answer is no, that the B is the real problem branch of the bunch. The volume of riders adds to its slowness compared to the other branches.
@@ndilday According to TransitMatters, the average speeds (measured from Park Street to the termini) are 8.6 mph on B, 9.3 on C, 15.5 on D, and 7.5 on E. Interestingly, it has the travel time from Park Street to Boston College at the 40-45 minute mark, but I guess maybe they're counting the time it takes to wait for the train or something
@@usernameusername4037 And we're talking different distances you'd have to maintain speed, as well... the google maps suggested walking path from Riverside to Park Street is 10.8 miles.... so you'd have to go not quite twice as far at not quite twice the speed to beat the D. :-)
I’ve been here for six months. I work in Burlington, but I spent the first four in Boston proper right on Boylston It took me 60 days before I realized it was literally faster a walk than it was to take the T. This is mostly because I was already having to walk from the stations and so seeing as like an average like 5 mph I could take more direct routes as opposed to having to route around the stops.
I lived in Boston for a year, was studying and lived off campus. (over in Roxbury and studied at Berklee in the back bay area) For the first month or two I did rely of the public transit out there and almost always got late. Got a bluebikes membership and started biking everywhere, cut my travel time and cost by nearly half!
Wow, a running video all about the line I take the most?? This really feels like it was made with love, and all the footage of Boston stirred up these warm fuzzy feelings in me. Great job, man!
I know this is a bit tongue in cheek, but yall did pick the Green Line for a reason. It runs at grade as an on street tram most of the way. No challenge against the renovated red line huh? 😊 Biking does seem to be the real winner here though doesn’t it? That’d be half the time.
Man, this video is incredible! Great work Matt! I’d love to see our trains improve to hit their new PB, but I guess we’ll just have to train harder. 😎 and I’m def running this in ‘25.
I actually love I found this. The one thing I always notice whenever I am out in boston is runner. I started to notice them when I was in high school and its just something I have become so aware of. It in a way has kinda helped my mental health but thats a whole thing.
such a great vid! i enjoyed the cinematography, mini train models, and the pacing. as a local myself, i can honestly say that you did a great job capturing the vibe of the city!
When I ran the marathon we stayed in Quincy and took the Red Line. My wife and I called it the "walking train". We were bewildered coming from Mpls where we have newer maintained trains. I run or bike commute though since I can run direct routes via our excellent bike infrastructure.
Its why I think boke and bus infrastructure will be more valuable for inner city Boston. Ring routes for the trains will be great and expanding further out into the denser suburbs are still viable and should be done, but I also think Mass just has to bite the bullet and start radically changing the train and subways systems. The city has shown its willing to dismantle and rebuild large scale infrastructure before with the big dig. Its gonna suck and a lot of people will complain, but I think long term, the benefits will far outwigh all of that. But even still, Boston is a walkable city and I think expanding all the bus networks and building all new roads with added bike infrastructure will show immediate benefits. While more ambitious, I really do think bike highways connecting all the parts of Boston and the surrounding towns and suburbs would be great. I live 10ish miles outside of downtown Boston. It takes the same amount to bike in as it does to drive in and where I live, driving to a train station or bus stop would take by far the longest.
I love our wonderful city and the story of our transit system. Hopefully the next decade looks bright, as we've all seen what decades of neglect has done.
I will say they have done a tremendous job in speeding up the red line. It used to take 40 monis to get from Andrew to Kendall at 5:40 am and sometimes an hour at 3:00 pm to take it back. This was during the summer of '24. As of today, both the 5:40 and 3:00 trains take me about 18 mins to cover the same distance.
got recommended this video, loved it, went and watched your other videos, loved them too! instant sub, hope you keep making boston short films, they've all been fantastic
Love the filming and editing, one of the best transit videos I've seen! As a ton of people have pointed out, the sample group was heavily biased towards runners (as in any footrace), but it still shouldn't be possible for a majority of runners to outrun a train for 6 miles!
Once during Boston marathon I met up with my dad (runner) on the Heartbreak Hill, then I went to the nearest station (Newton Center) to go to Coply where the finishing line is. My dad finished the race before I got out of the station. But that was including around 10 minutes of waiting time.
I saw this race start at BC a few weeks ago and had no idea what was going on. This is hilarious! I hate taking the green line into Boston because of how slow it is, it's almost always faster to Uber
Yeah. It's cause the speed now is mostly not limited by the tracks, but by the traffic lights they have to follow, making it so the train has to stop at nearly every intersection.
I'd like to see Riverside to Medford/Tufts! The train gets up to a good clip on some parts of that route... but the runners could go the direct route through Watertown.
I’ve taken the public transport in almost every major US city and the MBTA is by FAR the worst. I don’t know how the MBTA still operates or the city hasn’t been sued
great vid. try outswimming the mbta ferry next
funny
Lol, that ferry moves a lot faster than people imagine. Plus that would be a hell of a swim to Hull/Hingham
Good comparison since this guy is a moron
lol as a ferry captain you don’t stand a chance. Even the slowest ferries travel faster than an Olympic swimmer.
Needing to average a 7:50 pace over 6 miles isn't trivial, but is pretty bad for a train, lol.
1- this is a great film, I loved it.
2- Why the heck would a city be designed so the train has to stop for car traffic lights??? an average speed of 7mph for a train is ludicrous!
I think originally it was more of a street car thing but I defiantly think it needs a re-design.

The whole concept of a express train only exists because the previous T can catch up with it mainly due to the continuous stops. only the green line does this. all the others are your typical subway lines.
Meanwhile in Los Angeles where their most important train lines stop at traffic lights.
Yep. It's so frustrating. It's designed like streetcars but somehow worse.
