I'm a 75-year-old alto player and went to sleep last night with my phone on my chest playing a Desmond album. To me, he'll always be The Man....

Always loved Desmond’s playing but my favourite alto player of all time was Jimmy Dorsey. I’m in my late 70s and back in the 60s I played both alto and tenor in a stage band. (Still have my Selmer *80 alto mouthpiece) Being from Toronto and having seen Bickert live I was amazed at his casual gum chewing effortless style.

Back in the 70s a high school buddy of mine was an aspiring jazz pianist ( later signed by A&M ) who joined the musician’s union as soon as he could. Ed Bickert’s number was in the union directory, so he called him up to ask him if he’d accompany him on a gig for $50. Ed said sure. True story.

I'm ashamed to admit that, as a serious guitarist, it's only in the last month that I've heard Ed Bickert's work. He's a beast. His chording might be the best of his era. Wow, what a player. Perfect backup to Paul's awesome sax.

I have many albums with Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck plus others, and had really wanted to see him live, but alas..... One of the most musical players, regardless of instrument.

Stunning work from a man who left us too soon. His ability to create beauty, even in the first eight or nine notes of this piece, is astonishing.
