  • The church of Santa Maria di Castello is one of the oldest places of Christian worship in Genoa and one of the most intact and evocative Romanesque buildings in the city. According to tradition, a first place of Marian worship in this place would have been built at the behest of the Lombard king Aripert in 658, on the ruins of a Lombard temple, but the first documented information dates back to the 11th century. The current church was built in the first half of the 12th century by Antelamic workers on the remains of the older one. The maestroantelami were a workforce of Lombard origin, specialized in masonry and carpentry work documented between the 10th and 16th centuries. (The term antelami masters is also associated with numerous sculptors, painters and architects originating from the Intelvi Valley. The term "antelami" derives from Antelamus, a toponym of early medieval origin which indicated a valley located between the lakes of Como and Lugano ). After the arrival of the Dominicans, in the second half of the fifteenth century the complex was enlarged and became an important cultural centre: by purchasing properties adjacent to the church, the convent was built and the three cloisters and the sacristy were built. In 1870 the architect Maurizio Dufour was entrusted with the task of restoring the interior of the church, highlighting the medieval parts, covered over time by a thick layer of plaster. Dufour himself created the fresco in the vault of the choir, depicting "God the Father in glory". The complex consists of a church, convent and cloisters. The church, in Romanesque style, through the concession of the chapels to the great families of the Genoese nobility has increased its artistic heritage over the centuries, especially pictorial and sculptural, with works by the most important Ligurian artists ranging from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. A recent restoration has brought to light the original Romanesque internal portal, over which the fifteenth-century portal giving access to the sacristy had been superimposed, now relocated on the right wall of the church. The main altar, rebuilt after the bombing of 1684, is surmounted by the marble group of the Assumption by Anton Domenico Parodi. Leaning against a pillar near the new altar is a fourteenth-century wooden crucifix, by an unknown author, known as the Moorish Christ, much venerated by the faithful. Along each of the aisles there are five richly decorated chapels with a valuable set of works of art.

Interesting to see, for such a Romanesque Church, that there are no noticeable metal bars to hold together the arches after so many centuries, ... Just how many churches are there left for you to photograph in GENOA Massimo? Will you ever get to the end of them there.
