I think it has to do with the fact that someone young engaging with someone older in another language makes them seem mature, in a way. It usually makes them look more involved with other people doing other important things. I could be wrong, but that's definitely how I see it, being a Mexican with family gatherings often. Well, not often this year, but you know what I mean.

Well my English is really good and I’m Mexican, so what I did was study for myself, I watch everything in English and change everything in English. I started to think in English. School help me in my grammar, though I’m still relatively bad :/
