"Don't wait for us - keep going" to the helm when he was mid tack. Clew gets caught at 14min. Just shows the difficulty with heads in the covered boat having an opinion vs those with heads out the boat.

Can’t wait to see what’s quicker, an imoca or a 65. My money is on the imoca😊

Greater potential speed is with the IMOCA. However the foils and other things do squeeze the wind range of 'ideal conditions' slightly. So light winds, I'd favour the 65s, crazy conditions I'd be more confident in the 65s and push it harder. But then I wouldn't have the stones to take either of these boats seriously offshore, even in 12 knots.

The way the slot effect is explained in the video is not quite correct and an old understanding of how it works that has been proven wrong conclusively. The felt overall increase in power comes completely from the Jib sail. To explain that one must understand that air does move much more 3 dimensionally than most people exspect. The area of influence a sail has extands far away from its actual surface. The common understanding is that the lift is created in the surface of the sail thus it makes sense that higher speed there increases power. But lift does not quite work that way. Its more like a massive, several meters thick layer of air being bend around the sail, lowering the pressure and the sail wants to move into that big lower pressure area. This preamble to explain that the slot actually creates a slight buildup of air inbetween the mast and the jib, what called the slot. This buildup creates a higher pressure area on the windward side of the jib so overall and air that would have flowed on the windward side is pushed far ahead and around to the leeside thus a higher volume of air can be moved around the leeside, the power side of the jib. The mainsail looses power in comparison to a wider slot. But the jib gains more power than is lost, so overall its a net gain. Offcourse its a ballance act and completely stalling the main does not create an overall higher bonus. One must see both sails as one combined sail that wants to move as much volume of air around the leeside of the sails. Creating a slot that speeds up flow does not help there. The often used bernoullis principle needs a closed, 2 sided system after the constriction that allows the flow to expand again but still be constrained. As the jib is not unlimited in lenght and you usually want the flattest leech possible, theres no bases for the bernoulli guy to get his fingers in the pie. Again, mass airflow not surface air speed. Otherwise amazing video and please more :D

Anybody that wants some more in depth prove please read up on some forums where people like tom speer are quite good at proving that it woorks that way. In Additon looing at airfoil tests in windtunnels with flow lines really show how a change in angle of attack and thus pressure bends air around the leeside even though the line should really pass on the windward side.

Good old 'Bi-plane' theory. I forgot most of it at university, but I like the way you explain it.

when did the ocean race become a 2nd class race?

moving forward, I truly believe 2014-15 was the last official ocean race. for 2023 they should have a new race name and trophy so as not to blemish the history

the ocean race should change the race name to the Vendee Globe 2. I was so excited a while ago, but not now.
