  • Who better to speak to about why cyclists are obsessed with climbs than Simon Warren, author of the popular 100 Climbs books. I joined him for a ride around his local roads and climbs in the Peak District to get to the heart of why we all (mostly) love climbs and seeking out ever harder and more challenging climbs.

    Much as I like your bike reviews, I like this sort of content even more.

    Years ago we used to do a sportive every year in the Peak District called "Phil & Friends" organised by none other than Phil Liggett. That sadly ended a few years ago but I remember the route and we have been back several times since and ridden it with a group of friends. The 90-mile loop includes climbs like Winnats Pass, Rushups Edge and Holme Moss including several other leg snappers. Definitely my favorite riding area of the country.

      That was the first 'sportive' I ever did, although they weren't called sportives back then. I did it around 2001 and Phil Liggett was actually there at the start at the church hall in Stannington (if I remember). I remember bonking on the climb up Chapel en le Frith, up to the feed stop. I then gorged myself on every foodstuff possible and consequently felt sick until the final 10 miles when I felt fine! A classic example of how NOT to fuel!
      Great route though and I'd like to do it again some day.

    34×29 on a 36.5% grade, that is impressive, good on you Simon. David, great interview especially the parts while riding.

    Love climbing the hills and mountains of Southwest Virginia. Going to be picking up this guidebook and make it a life goal to climb them all. Great video!

    I ride about 5000 miles and 500,000 ft of elevation in the Peak District every summer. I ride 20 miles to get there and spend all day going up and down. Amazing roads and often very quiet.

    3:42 is that Apple Street on Werneth Low?
    5:02 I thought I recognized it 😛
    That bit with the rectangular holes is brutal. Get up there and keep to the left and you go down Cowlishaw Road that's 20%. Go to the end of Cowlishaw Road and keep left again and go down Compstall Hill, then go left at the bottom of that hill and you get to John Street - the most brutal of all the roads around there because it's quite long, leading to the top of Werneth Low - but John Street is not tarmac, it's a farm road littered with potholes, so perhaps wouldn't be included in these lists of climbs. I never realized this but riding up John Street burned twice as many calories as I did going up Winnats Pass (both on my smart trainer). It's the ride I hold my PR on for average Watts 😊

    Today I tried the steepest climb I’ve ever come across. Just outside Rickmansworth at 9.1% and failed miserably. I had to stop two thirds of the way up. I will try it again. I’m more used to 6% - 6.8% climbs so today I was definitely out of my comfort zone. I’m slowly losing weight thanks to cycling and the local climbs are helping. From 4%, 5% and 6% climbs; some days they’re easy, other days not so but I have to include climbs in my rides or it’s a waste of time

      Ricky Hill!! I remember it well as I grew up in Harrow. I used to go up it a lot around the ages of 15/16. I then stopped riding for a year or so and went up it again and got cramp in both legs, at the same time!!

      @@rondragon I was out riding that way yesterday and I avoided it; still a bit too intimidating for me.😞 I made up for it doing : my longest ride, my record total climbing and fastest 40 km. I still intend to try Ricky Hill even though I have COPD I’m determined not to let it hold me back.

      @@cathalkenneally1614 - you'll get there, just build up to it. Half the battle is in the mind. When I'm next at my mum's in Harrow, I'll give it a go. It's been a long long while!

    • @malcolmmason528
      @malcolmmason528 2 роки тому +1

      There has been some slippage on the road surface and the local council have closed the road for safety reasons. Cyclists are still riding up there, but aren't supposed to. Cheers.

    • @rondragon
      @rondragon 2 роки тому

      I assume it was Snakes Pass which was closed a couple of months back due to heavy rain causing subsidence. It was banned to vehicular traffic and eventually all traffic (including cycles, although that didn't stop people!)

    “I always have to walk on Hardknott”. You what? From a hill climbing specialist? Maybe stop grinding the too-big gears? Seems to be a wanna be racer thing. Newer bikes at least seem to come with more sensible lower gears. Ah well. I’ve never walked Hardknott and I’m a lot older than Simon…
