I’m Thai and have lived in 7 countries, recently moved back to Bangkok. Your estimate is spot on for those living a mix of Western and Thai lifestyles. Anything less is doable, but you’d need to adapt to the Thai way of living-like eating street food and relying on the BTS/MRT/Bus instead of taxis or Grab. However, for someone who wants to eat Western food daily, shop for groceries at supermarkets, and stay in a nicer condo in prime locations, a minimum budget of $3,000 per month would be necessary (which is still good cuz a 1-bedroom in NYC/Miami is already $3,000/month)
As someone who is from Toronto, Canada, and has been living here on and off for 2 years. I've been here for 4.5 months and my monthly average budget is 50,000 baht or $2050 CAD or $1500 USD per month. I could reduce it to 40,000 baht, $1650 CAD, or $1150 USD per month if I sign a 12-month lease on a unit in Bangkok. I do agree that Westerners do have much better living conditions living in ASEAN. I know a lot of Thai people who are working professionals who are in Bangkok and their monthly salaries can range from 15000-30000 baht or $850 to $1500 USD. Some of them are struggling to live a good lifestyle as their earning power is made in bahts and not in dollars euros, or British sterling. They tend to have roommates (which reduces the cost by 50%), and eat out at hawker centers where it costs 50-100 baht or $1.45 to $2.90 USD per deal or eat out once per day to reduce cost

Good idea to keep saving. I’m 63 and will retire to Thailand soon, and at my age health insurance becomes exorbitant and my likelihood of needing it increases with age. Health insurance premiums rise every year as you age and for high quality coverage over 70, it can be $800US per month. Old school as compared to the modern fast love, my bad. 🙏
Sorry but gotta defend thai streets food reputation at all cost 7:16 actually that’s very normal bc cha tra mue’s rose tea is very famous for its detoxification benefits so you go to toilet after having it was not bc they’re not hygienic or anything it’s natural effect! me as a thai person with a thai stomach find it very effective for when you have constipation as well 😂 but i agree with you tho not every street food place is worth trying you can carefully check how hygienic they are by looking at how they display or prepare the food but i promise you that most of them are safe and very tasty! pick a nice location and give it a try there should not be any problem🫶🏻💝
I'll take the other side. I think it's great that you can reduce costs and stress in Thailand. (I just can't imagine reducing stress by moving to a big city.) It's easy moving from a high cost area to a low cost area. It's a much harder move from a low cost area to a high cost area. Over time you're pricing yourself out of the US. From a financial standpoint it will be harder to move back or retire in the US. Also, in living abroad, who is going to know you when and if you want to move back to the US. You haven't worked/networked in the US. You really don't want to depend on a 4 or 5 percent interest rate to live on*. It doesn't take into account taxes and the hidden tax of inflation. You can almost depend on inflation. Inflation helps both governments and businesses refinance their debt. It's baked into the system. Savers are the 'pigeon' at the poker table. * Back in the early 1980's you could get as an example tax free general obligation (bonds backed by taxes) municipal bonds at 14 or 15 percent. That might happen again. Bonds go back and forth in long multi-decade swings.
I think you spend too much, and it defeats the purpose to geo arbitraging. Redirect more disposible income into investing and your wealth will exponentially grow. If you entirely depend on USD, it could go like the EUR and lose significant value vs THB, and you'll be paying 50%+ of your current expenses.
Oh God I completely disagree with everything you said about street food. Your go to places are like the McDonald's of Thailand. Thong Smith is so terrible compared to a good bowl of street noodles. Jones salad is okay but $8 or $9 vs $1.25 street food salad. You might like saving money as a hobby but you're really lazy when it comes to food. I live in Bang Chak and the typical condo tennant foreigner or Thai gets Grab food. If you literally walk another 100' you can save half your money eating street food(mom and pop sit down restaurants) that tastes better. Like you said everyone has their thing but if your hobby is saving money it makes me laugh. ฿38,000 for a condo and your food bill must be astronomical. I'm not trying to save, I'm just old and it's ingrained not to waste money because I grew up poor. Now that I'm rich and done everything I live so cheap here it's bizarre. I like your videos they are all over the place funny like a crazy girl.
Well, the difference is that in America you can get equal rights, opportunites and eventually citizenship. You will get none of that in Thailand and most people will stay just a couple of years

Old school as compared to the modern fast love, my bad. 🙏
I found bolt definitely much better and cheaper than Grab
I thought I was the only weird one. We share a lot of things in common. 😂
joyce will you share your google sheets too heh template
11:00 you heard about the little thing called Inflation?
My mom and her collection of portmerrion plates and trays 😂 9:44

Squid Game?
Cannot believe K Joyce is 26 ! You look 21 but have a “wise aunty”s head on ur shoulders 😂
great video! lots of youtubers are making videos about how much they earn on youtube, would you be open to sharing that?
nah 😂
Bonds go back and forth in long multi-decade swings.
good to know ~ hope I stay in Thailand forever 😅
I honestly do not know a single person that really want to retire in the US.

I only like restaurants in BKK too. No street food for me. Thong Smith with wagyu beef is fire.
Well, the difference is that in America you can get equal rights, opportunites and eventually citizenship. You will get none of that in Thailand and most people will stay just a couple of years
You must not be from the States because the only color of equality in America is GREEN. Also, what advantages do you gain from citizenship?
Thailand does let people apply for citizenship. Not sure where you would have heard that you can’t.
Did you just say equality and opportunities😂 loll
@@keltonjohnson6197It's more difficult to get the citizenship in Thailand than in the US, especially a male foreigner who marries a Thai woman.
Agreed US still the best
It will be interesting to see how many male subscribers you will lose because you now have a bf ;-)
I doubt Joyce would lose any male subscribers because the chance of a male subscriber dating her is slim if she were single.
lol I like your math ✅
I feel if male subscribers leave because she has a boyfriend, they were here for the wrong reasons, and she's lucky to lose them! I prefer her channel about Thailand because most males only want to discuss dating; thirst trap channels. Joyce informs on other aspects of BKK which is refreshing.
@ 💯 I’m here to see what is life like for an American living in Bangkok! I’m planning to retire in Thailand from the States in 2 years.
