"Alburquerque" = Portuguese for White Oak Cork Tree "Albur (White Arbor), Querque (Cork) The white oak trees that they strip the bark off to make wine bottle corks" Named after the Viceroy of New Spain (Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, 10th Duke of Alburquerque). Alburquerque with the extra "R" that was erroneously removed when the Santa Fe Railroad came to the City in 1881and painted a sign at the depot with the "R" missing, no one noticed due to being illiterate or unable to spell it as many today. Alburquerque, A city in Spain, near the Portuguese border home to royalty of the lineage of Dukes and the castle on the hill in the middle of the ancient city where they lived.

I may be transferring to Albuquerque for work and trying to get a better insight. I'm a 'city' person by nature so a bit concerned it might not be the right fit. I definitely enjoy walkability to shops, restaurants, bars, etc. and like a vibrant nightlife from comedy clubs to beer gardens to a low-key corner bistro to grab a drink. I'm not concerned about schools or family neighborhoods - definitely more condos, lofts, etc. close to everything. Suggestions? Or should I just say no to the move?

Let him know the truth man 🤣🤣. These motels are rented by the hour because of the prostitution and drug use in the area. TRUST ME IF YOU'RE COMING FROM OUT OF TOWN THESE PLACES ARE THE LAST PLACES YOU WANT TO BE. I challenge any one of you to rent one of these motels, walk around their premises and not be able to find syringes on the ground or prostitutes and drug dealers on the premises.
You want to stay away from West Central and the war zone East Central. A lot of these hotels in the university area or downtown are being revitalized and turned into different businesses which I think is great.

Hi Skip. The apt. complex I live in has been sold to a commercial real estate company who has a reputation for acting like the North end of a South-bound mule. You probably know who it is. They're respecting the length of residential leases, but are trying to strong-arm us into moving early. For example, they're cancelling the TV service on Aug. 1st, even though it's included in the lease. Our position is that they cannot cancel the TV service. Are we right on this?

ABQ is not that great, don't come here. Crime is actually pretty bad in area's such as South Valley and the city doesn't do much regarding homelessness. APD is severely undermanned and it's generally safer to just avoid the highway in the evening because there tends to be an accident almost daily. One of the Highest automobile Deaths per capital in the nation because nobody uses their turning signal when switching lanes. Low cost of living but if you're younger and looking for school, CNM isn't bad for the prices but outside of cheap education, there's not much of a future in ABQ unless you plan on being a part of the service industry. The real money in NM is in Hobbs for the Oil and Sandia Labs. Education is also one of the worst in the country so if you have children, don't move here.
