Giovanni Gabrieli - Sonata pian' e forte (1597)

Giovanni Gabrieli (c. 1554/1557 - 12 August 1612) was an Italian composer and organist. He was one of the most influential musicians of his time, and represents the culmination of the style of the Venetian School, at the time of the shift from Renaissance to Baroque idioms.

This is the earliest known piece of music to call for specific brass instruments. “Sonata pian’e forte” means an instrumental piece using soft and loud dynamics. A more technical definition of this is a Venetian polychoral style which arose from architectural peculiarities with regards to St Mark's Basilica. Sonata (at this time) means a piece for instruments. It was probably written to be played as part of a Catholic service at St Mark's, Venice. It was written for 8 instruments divided into 2 groups of 4 and placed in opposing galleries in the cathedral.

ce genre de morceau prouve qu'on est petit à petit passé de la musique modale à la musique tonale (c'est un processus lent, fin du XVIème, début XVIIème) : à la cadence finale le mib qui descend au ré de l'accord final de sol majeur (sol, si bécare, ré) alors qu'on est en sol mineur théoriquement (deux bémols à la clé), c'est la tierce picarde
! Si on regarde la voix du milieu (cinquième portée, au milieu des deux systèmes - il faut lire en clé d'ut trois), on a "do-si bécare", la septième qui descend (même si il n'y a pas d'accord de septième de dominante, ce n'était pas encore connu à cette époque, c'est dans l'Orfeo de Monteverdi - 1607 - qu'on trouverait les premières septièmes de dominantes de l'Histoire!)!
