First off, I could listen to you play all day. You play beautifully. Second, I took my daughter to Guitar Center to look at guitars (she has decided to learn to play). She decided on a Martin Custom D. I love Gibson personally, as I grew up listening to my grandfather play Gibsons. He had two electrics and a J 45, although he also had two Martin's as well. Anyhow, guitar center had the J 15 and I had the honor of picking it up and looking at this bad boy. It is a stunning guitar. The abalone rosette is ridiculously beautiful on this guitar. The walnut on the back and sides is stunning. It is comfortable to hold and it sounds like butta! The one Guitar Center had was an out of the box and on sale for $1,100. I absolutely recommend this guitar. As soon as I break the bank to get my daughter the Martin, I am going back for that J 15. I can't think of a better way to spend some of that tax refund. Thanks for a great review. Listening to you play it on here actually solidified my choice to go ahead and buy it.
I bought mine in 2014 it’s a fantastic guitar I put new super jumbo frets the biggest that Dunlop makes and a stripe pick-guard the first years J-15 had highly figured Walnut best sounding acoustic guitar I own and I own many
Just great all around review. Good sound man, guitar & playing! I have a special savings that I am building up that was strictly for a J45. But now with all I'm learning about the J15 I just don't know. I really like the North American Hardwoods bit. I'd like to have both but that's not gonna happen anytime soon. A real conundrum. Thanks Dave, I have been very happy with the J15. I did have the opportunity to play a friends "settled in" J45 man it is sweet. Not sure I wouldn't make the same choice again.
Hi Because of your great review I have bought one of these guitars. Just getting into playing at the age of 60! Could you tell me if the strings are 80/20 or PB. Whatever they are it sounds beautiful, All the best to you from the other side of the pond in England.
Kevin Webb Great to hear! They are PB. I have tried several brands, gauges, string materials etc. I always come back to the “Gibson” branded strings for this guitar. They just seem to be what this particular guitar prefers. I use “stringjoy” on all guitars aside from this one. Happy playing
Moses Mabini I used the Gibson branded strings. I generally prefer DR strings on most of my stringed instruments. That being said, my standard string choice did not work well sonically on this particular guitar.
Thanks. I just had mine set up and I had the guy put on whatever he prefers so it has d'addarios right now. First impression is that the original Gibson strings sounded better. Once I need a restring I'll definitely go back to gibson. Your guitar sounds great btw. +1 for j-15.
Moses Mabini frankly I was surprised. I generally trash the stock strings on most things. I was disappointed that I waisted a set of strings. Especially when “to my ear” the Gibson string are much better suited for this guitar.
