great vid, the cut off weights on 1st class are 4,8,12, and 16 for the price bumps, I love pirate ship. I usually just check the ebay shipping for all the different rates. Hey Sean, lovin your vids very informative as im learning how to ship. Question, if you get an order of an item-s that may bump up the shipping cost or a bulk of shirts let's say, do you raise the shipping cost on your item add on ebay above the $8.99 that you offer or do you keep it the same. Thinking that maybe won't make a good enough profit in the end ?

@Taylor Exchange hi Sean, I'm guessing people are getting stuck with the policy settings or basic shipping choices when they create a listing. Anything with dropdown choices can be overwhelming to new sellers. This video is actually a little advanced. You might think of making a 2 part video. How much to charge for shipping clothes on Ebay - Under 1 pound. Over 1 pound. Then for the under 1 pound you can hold up the poly bag and emphasize THIS IS THE ONLY BAG YOU NEED to ship a polo shirt, a light weight dress shirt, light shorts. Show them on a scale how much these items weigh. Tell them the size of the poly bag. Then show a flannel shirt and jeans and say NOPE. Show the weights of those items. Maybe Ragnar can bark his disapproval. New sellers get 1st class and priority mixed up. It takes time. You can't explain in 1 video. I know you can make a great 2 part because I remember a previous video where you showed how you charge for multiple items. Maybe that could be a part 3. As long as each one is distinctly different it will work for new sellers. And that's how you'll get high view counts. If you show your screen with the drop down choices it will be a homerun. Your previous big hit video scored partly because you showed your photo setup in the thumbnail. Having parts 1, 2, 3 will make viewers feel like you're teaching them. These might be easier for you to make too. You could even do one on how much to charge to ship jeans on ebay. But you always have to show the drop down choices to be really clear. Hope this helps.
Great video I just learned the valuable lesson. I got hit with $174 in additional shipping because my shipping weight was off. I would always ship clothes in a cardboard box for extra protection not realizing how much additional weight that causes.

No problem Jared. If any order can not fit in the legal flat rate envelope then it goes into the large poly bag. You can compare rates but the box in bag/cubic shipping price for Pirate Ship with be one of the cheapest along with UPS rates.
for the box in a bag method in pirate ship the measurements you use is the size of the bag before you pack anything into it. Example: if you're using a 10x13 poly bag than you use 10x13.
It’s a game changer! So you sign up with user name and password. Link your eBay store and put a credit card on file. It will show all your eBay sales and update the tracking and allow you to purchase and print the label.
When it comes to the listing what do you usually select for shipping I would hate to set by mistake to priority and then realize it can ship it for way less.
Sean, I am trying to get my shipping prices sorted on Ebay. Right now I am doing "Free Shipping", but it seems like most people don't for clothing so my items look like they are priced too high. When making the policy if I pick "standard shipping" does that just indicate it could go multiple different ways?
Hi Troy, Standard Shipping mean 3-7 day shipping. It gives you the wiggle room to pick slower shipping. I have that selected but try to ship as quickly and for as little money as possible. If you add a flat rate shipping and your items become too high becomes if that I would run a markdown sale on your store and just price any new items lower to account for the shipping.
I’ve never shipped anything before and I am a little bit confused. If someone on eBay or any other site pays for shipping then can I use whatever envelope I want as long as I attach the label on it? Also let’s say I grab one of those free envelopes that offer at usps. If I attached the shipping label could I just throw it into one of the blue usps boxes or would I have to bring it to the front desk to get a receipt or tracking number?
Those blue boxes are for letters I would not put the flat rate envelopes in there. Whatever method of shipping you determine when listing the item you are supposed to use that method but if you chose a faster or more expensive one. That works too.
Great video!!! I’m guessing you don’t use business policies??? I say that bc I see you’ve selected the cheapest option, which is great. With business policies, if you offer multiple options (from cheapest to highest) you are suppose to ship accordingly to what the customer selects. So if Ground Select is the cheapest but you have the option for Priority and the customer selects that, then you are to use that.
Thanks. You are correct. I suppose that would be more customer friendly but I feel my location is a big advantage on shipping speed. First class vs priority speed is not too different the majority of times.
In the last example why not the Medium Flat Rate for $14? Would fit 3 shirts easily. I'm fairly new trying to learn all about shipping it's one of the things I've been the most nervous about I'm terrified to list large jackets or shoes not knowing if I'll end up getting screwed with some $20+ shipping across the country. I even have some large Carhartt fleece lined jeans that I can't fit into a flat rate envelope. I'm testing packaging before I list items that are a first for me, which is most things other than shirts. lol
I hear you. I’d go with pirate ship for anything heavy that doesn’t fit in the envelopes. That go off of cubic shipping which can save a ton. Being in Texas I have a bit of an advantage avoiding the coast to coast label.
@@TaylorExchange I’m still a rookie so I’m just trying to learn the basics of USPS first, but I’ve heard about pirate ship something to look at in the future for sure. I’m just trying to keep it super simple for now. Thank you for the recommendation.
@@rick9705 Pirate Ship requires a login and password. It imports your eBay sales and you input the size of the package. Pretty simple and will save you a lot of money.
yes i hear you. I have tons of brand new never work sports t shirts, hoodies, jackets, coats, gloves and hats my deceased brother left to me and i have no idea how to sell anything. I feel like a fish our of water.
Hmm, I’ll need to look into the size of that box. I typically always use the large poly mailer and go with cubic shipping on Pirate Ship. Has to be a 12+ order for a box or a lot of large items but they are few and far between.
I’ve found the usps medium flat rate box useful for certain multi quantity orders but I’m on the east coast so might never make sense for you, also I fell like I’m the only clothing person that uses bulk shipping but if you use bulk shipping you can make a scan sheet for your post man not sure if there’s a way otherwise someone can let me know if I’m wrong
Hey David, ya in the middle of the country the flat rate boxes are not as big of an advantage. I never use the scan sheets because they are considered received scans and not acceptance scans. However, if you use the scan sheet and bring the items early the postal workers typically get them scanned in the back. I just drop my packages off at least a few hours before closing time and the workers said they are required to get them all scanned before the days end.
@@TaylorExchange makes sense, just giving my post man more options, like if they don’t scan everything immediately at least they will scan the scan sheet but I also have them pickup but I can see how that makes sense
@@TaylorExchange yeah also when the post picks up sometimes it’s not your regular post man and I’m not to trusting that every employee will scan every item. Probably would drop of if I was closer it’s probably safer
Do you get to choose how it ships because your listings are free shipping? I know if a customer requests Priority then sending UPS Ground could be an issue for the customer due to where they live. But I do get why you showed us the options. I was educated in areas I was not thinking about before this video.
@@TaylorExchange Standard, meaning First Class? I've heard other resellers use that term. But if an item is over 1# eBay won't let you list as First Class. BTW I do have a store and I'm a top seller, if that helps to answer this question.
@@lisafornal7009 Standard is 2-5 days shipping so you could go ground or priority. In my shipping policy video I linked in of daily refinements videos and he talks about standard shipping so I just followed that advice. They don’t leave bad ones. Most important thing is the item matches up with what they expect. Even small flaws can bother people if you don’t take a photo of it and note it in the listing. As far as packaging as long as it arrives on time your good!
My brother died leaving me with his sports clothing and sports memorabelia business. Is Ebay a good place and an easy place to sell. I never did this before.

Why didn't you mention the legal size priority mailing envelope, the flexible one not the cardboard one. I use those legal size flexible one all the time. instead of the cardboard envelope.
Hey Sean! I just started using flat rate envelopes to ship my clothes and some clerks at the post office reject my packages and others don’t. What can I do to make sure the packages get accepted?
Hey Ivan, I would ask to speak with their post master. The rule is if it fits it ships. Problem is the postal worker has some power in using their opinion on the rules. Try and be as nice and friendly as possible.
Thank you for the response! I’m always polite and friendly but some of them are just difficult to convince. I’ll give the post master route a try next time.
I too have had issues with Flat Rate Envelopes. They've always let it slide but they sometimes tell me that I'm not suppose to add tape to the strip or some other BS. I try to use only a few of the cashiers I'm familiar with. I definitely always hand over to a person though just to make sure it's OK.
@@WonderWhatHappened Inonow all to well. So they have a clause that lets the worker make a decision based on pretty their own opinion and it can get a bit fast and loose with the rules. I just try and be friendly everyday and ask them how they are doing.
I just got charged for shipping overages on 7 items. Some of them sold over a month ago. Is that normal? I've never had Ebay hit me with shipping charges like that all at once before.
Hey Sharon, I hate reading that you got charged like that. It does happen to me as well but usually in the positive direction. When in doubt on the weight I add an ounce or if the scale says exactly 8oz I’ll take out the plastic bag I use to hold my items and bring it under 8oz to 7.8oz just to avoid overages. You could also check if you scale is calibrated or if it’s up against a wall and the item sometimes leans on the wall while weighing, that can also throw off the weight.
@@TaylorExchange I've had occasional adjustments (both up and down), but all have been fairly slight. This is the first time I've been charged for multiple adjustments all at once and on items that aren't heavy (a lightweight puffer vest, a mens sweater), and some of them sold weeks ago. I'm stumped on this one. Anyway, I love your channel and am thankful for all the help!
Was it through USPS or UPS? Just asking because USPS started over charging for larger items last year. Example : Golf Clubs I used to ship in the USPS provided long boxes but now they over charge for their own boxes over a certain length. And for UPS they supposedly don't let you cut corners at all. Example : Same golf club situation now I started using 48x6x6 from Uline and I was getting over charged because the boxes say 48x6x6 but really they're 48 1/4 so I was being double charged for that 1/4 of an inch. So now I have to customize every box that's longer than the normal. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much for your content - Even after 25+ years selling online I'm still learning new stuff. Regarding this video, I'd love to see an updated video comparing Ground Advantage. I'm noticing that I'm tending to use Ground Advantage more in the 1-5 pound range, but in doing so, you lose the free priority packaging. I guess it really doesn't matter that much, but it does mean we have to scramble for more unbranded packaging/envelopes/boxes.
@@TaylorExchange I do not pack any different on poshmark, but it is so much easier. Anything under 5 lbs ships for the same rate, and I use the whatever priority box I want.
Hey Zachary, when I do get an order with multiple items it typically fits in a large poly mailer and I use the box in a bag option for Pirate Ship. I've only had to use a box a handful a times and in those cases I pack it as tight as possible and check all options for the cheapest label. I didn't explain it the best on that part of the video. I wish I would've thanked Pirate Ship in the video. That company has saved me so much money over the years.
@Taylor Exchange oh okay I'm jw. When I ship in the larger poly I always use ebay cube ground and just ship in the poly. So It is confusing why you would use pirate when ebay has ground and its normally about the same price
@@kantak16 Ah I see, next order like that I’ll check. I think Pirate Ship is cheaper but I could be wrong. I only get one every week or two. I’ll pay closer attention next time.
Pirate is cheaper than eBay on alot of things. Alot of times I can go to Pirate ship from ebay, upgrade the buyer from Ground to Priority (grab that free insurance) and still save money from what the buyer paid on eBay for ground or standard shipping. Pirate is freaking awesome and saves me so much money. Also, during the holiday season Pirate shipping doesn't charge the USPS seasonal increase, which is more savings on top of their normal savings. Pirate rocks
@A C I'm not sure what your savings is on ebay but when the buyer pays "ground" 99% of the time you can upgrade to priority for less then if we paid for ground. Priority is also around 25% up to 30% off what the customer pays for. Great conversation. Always up to learn what other people are doing/trying.
Hey Supercell, I've heard UPS will take them but using USPS materials are property of government. Not to be Johnny Law in the comment section but the USPS website says "Misuse may be a violation of federal law."
Priority mail boxes cost you more in the long run because you can’t use Ground Advantage. With the rolling out of that replacing First Class for higher weight, PM is pretty much obsolete.
Great content, as always. Something you forgot to mention while choosing rates is customer service. Meaning, if they spent a lot of $, then getting it there quickly might be worth a few extra bucks in hopes of retaining them as a customer for the future. Jake
Ah yes that is a really good point. I suppose I glossed over it because with next day shipping living in Texas it seems everything gets their relatively quick. My most common positive feedback is shipping speed. But that is a valid point for sure.
@@TaylorExchange Could also have discussed that it's ok to make a few bucks on shipping. I know your business model averages a few bucks per order just from the shipping. Some people need reassurance this is ok. Jake

I work for the post office and if it says FLAT rate we won't mail anything to bulky hence FLAT rate.
I’m going to need to talk with your Post Master.
Very helpful information. Well done video.
Thanks
If my package is more than 1 pound, can I still use a Poly mailer? Or does it have to be the USPS envelope? Thanks for the info.
You can use a mailer. This video is before ground advantage but if it’s over a 1lb sometimes priority is cheaper than ground advantage.
I’ve heard that if you need to go to a box, that regional A is the cheapest rate.
Hmm, I’ll need to look into the size of that box. I typically always use the large poly mailer and go with cubic shipping on Pirate Ship. Has to be a 12+ order for a box or a lot of large items but they are few and far between.
Regional A and B boxes have been discontinued, effective January 22, 2023
@@hamburger5555 Hey Harvey, thank you for the information!
The regional service has been discontinued but you can still use the Regional A & B boxes. They are used as any other calculated rate box.
@@maroman131 Great tip Mars, I had no idea!
I ship everything priority and adjust prices accordingly. I also don’t source low margin
That’s a great way to do it.
You are probably making a good amount of profit.
@@davidc4582 I’ve yet to set up the pick up but I live .5 mi from my post office and I check my P.O. when I go.
Hey Lisa, I have standard shipping but if I’m able to ship priority I do. But if I need to get the cheaper label I do.
Being in the middle of the country and shipping next day my item delivery speed is pretty quick which ever label I choose.
That’s awesome your top rated!
where can i purchase polybag?
My more recent videos has the Jiaropack link. Taylor10 gets you 10% off 👍
Do people leave good reviews with this packaging? New to clothes.
They don’t leave bad ones.
Most important thing is the item matches up with what they expect.
Even small flaws can bother people if you don’t take a photo of it and note it in the listing.
As far as packaging as long as it arrives on time your good!

Welcome to the team.
Watch some videos and ask me whatever I’ll try to help.
Great tutorial!
Hey Chris, thanks.
I hope it helps some people out.
My brother died leaving me with his sports clothing and sports memorabelia business. Is Ebay a good place and an easy place to sell. I never did this before.
Might be the best place.
I’d take your time and start with the lower end items to get a feel for how to sell before listing his high dollar items.
@@TaylorExchange thank you for your advice.
@@dianajames4717 You’re welcome
@@TaylorExchange have you ever been so overwhelmed that you just don't know where to begin. Having to open up and operate a business on top of a full time job while you are still grieving is just so much. All i feel like doing is crying all day long. Have you ever felt like that?
@@dianajames4717 No.
Mainly because if I don’t give full effort, nobody will care and my family will go bankrupt.

Why didn't you mention the legal size priority mailing envelope, the flexible one not the cardboard one. I use those legal size flexible one all the time. instead of the cardboard envelope.
Do you mean the tyvek ones?
Those are not flat rate.
However, I need to make an update video because the rates have changed again.
Have you shipping socks before?
No I have not sold socks before.
Good stuff, thanks man.
Hey iGovernment, thanks.
I appreciate it.
As a former postal worker and someone who has seen what happens to packages it is always best to tape up the package.
more great information.
Appreciate it
I just got charged for shipping overages on 7 items.
@@sharonwillis1472 Well thank you Sharon.
I’d ask the post master at your post office for an explanation if the numbers seem too far off.
@@theresellinghusband Oh man that’s right. I think their was a $15 charge if it is too long. Great tip on that!
Thank you.
And I did make an updated video on Ground Advantage!
Thanks for sharing
👍
Pro tip - Turn the large box inside out and it's no longer a priority box.
Interesting idea, I just read that USPS considers that misuse and doesn’t allow it.
I pretty much usual only poly mailers now a days.
The insides of my priority boxes have USPS Priority printed on them.
@@PaperDiva67 I don’t turn the boxes inside out. Doesn’t seem right.
Due to the constant evolution of shipping methods, the information in this video has become obsolete.
I concur.
I’ll have to make an updated one.
Thanks for sharing good information. You have a blessed day in the name of Jesus Christ.
Hey Tim, thanks.
Hi
Unless I sell the clothing item on Poshmark I’m using a Polymailer.
Hey Doda, those are some wise words.
Doesn’t Poshmark want a bit fancier packaging?
@@TaylorExchange I honestly don’t know. That’s why I use a priority box on Poshmark.
@@thedodafamily Oh ok.
@@TaylorExchange I do not pack any different on poshmark, but it is so much easier. Anything under 5 lbs ships for the same rate, and I use the whatever priority box I want.
@@JRod7245 Hey Ken, that is convenient.
Why do you use pirate ship for ground? Why not just use ebay to pay for ground?
Ive shipped through UPS using priority packaging all the time, no issues.
I wouldn’t say obsolete but yes ground advantage is OP.
This video was made before ground advantage was available.
Jake
@@chburbsgeeser2768 That’s a good point but I also have lower item price on sales due to high shipping cost
Another part of good customer service is folding the shirt nicely rather than just shoving it in the bag. Presentation is a big plus!
