Very nice, Ken! A couple points: starting around '90, the IAC valve only vibrates when the fuel pump is running; and the idle controller sends 12V pulses at a fixed rate of ~250 pulses per second. It varies the valve opening by changing the length of the pulses, in effect simulating 0 to 12 V sent to the valve.
thank you so much for sharing! I have been dealing with idle issues and never knew this could be the issue after all the research I've done! thanks for the video
Thanks so much for your videos, so helpful. I had my powersteering disconnectes, so I assume this maybe one of the causes for surging. Also it is running very rich. Also when I unplugged the throttle body switch the up and down reving stopped
89 vanagon...looks like mice ate the wiring harness at the relay, but my van idles smoothly. Hmmm.... the only reason I found it was because I had the tail lights out for painting the body. Now going back together and will repair the wiring and ops check the system. fingers crossed!
I’m having a horrible time with a high idle! I just removed my AC unit…all of it including the D pillar relay. I was idling perfect at round 1,000 and now I’m up to 1,300-1,400. I reconnected all the wires except the AC water condensing unit but the D Pillar relay box is back in and it’s still starting up and idling super high
That was so good boss , I have an issue with mine it is only cranking no start tell me abit about how the injector works coz they are all giving petrol at the same time , should it be like that if not what is the cause
Hello, mostly clear. My problem is that the fuel injection system was replace by a single carburator. Two issues: 1) the idle is too high 2) if i lower it to 800 to 1000 rpm (by adjusting the idle jet), when reaching the end of turning steering it will stop the engine.... any help?
Hi. thank you for the video. My vanagon is stalling after start up. no clicking at idle but their is one at full throttle . tried moving the throttle a bit to see if the clicking sound would manifest, no go. If I keeo it from stalling by accelerating and then start driving around, then no stalling. Help!
Colanutman, did you ever solve this cold idle at start problem? Same issue with me. Gotta step on throttle after cold start. Noticed no one answered your message after 2 yrs
After the van warms up it doesn't even need this idle stabilizer. So it sounds like this system isn't working for whatever reason. I am located in New Jersey in the USA
@@VanAgain thanks! I turned the idle air screw in and it helped a lot to lower the idle, and now the idle air control solenoid is raising the idle like it should.
Hey mate, Aussie here. I’m at a loss, throttle switch adjusted as per your vid. New idle stabiliser valve. Tried two control units and my van still revs it’s hole out. I’ve no idea why. Have I missed anything?

Ken, you are the best. Thanks for this video.
great video as well. so appreciated you took the time to make this

Try unplugging the idle air valve. Does the idle go down to normal?
Where is that part. This is all super new to mw
@@VanAgain could the ECU be thinking my AC is on right at start up? I took all that ac stuff out on Sunday.

That is one of the downsides of replacing the FI with carburetor. It is something that you will have to learn to live with.
i didn't replace it, i bought with that change, and was more ignorant of how it works than now... thanks for the info

Hi there, my '86 Westy starts just fine, purrs like a kitten for a while, then the idle rises and stays high. What do you think I might check 1st?
Clean the inside of the idle control valve with WD-40 or PB Blaster
Hey Ken great video. My 91 has issues with the idle not coming back down. It will also bump itself up sometimes. Thoughts?
Check the throttle position switch. I did another video on that.
Where are u located? My 87 westy stalling when is cold outside. After 30 min looks like it works fine.thank you

@@VanAgain the idle stabilizer is working all the time. It is there mostly to raise Idle when there is load on the engine like AC or power steering.
Hey Ken, if my van keeps running with the IAC valve unplugged, which seems wrong, should I adjust my idle screw?
If it is still idling high, you can try to adjust it down with the screw. If there is an intake air leak it will not lower it.
@@VanAgain thanks! I turned the idle air screw in and it helped a lot to lower the idle, and now the idle air control solenoid is raising the idle like it should.
Great to hear!
would this be the same for the 1.9 engine?
No they are different

Unplug the idle valve. Does it still rev high or unsteady? It is a vacuum leak.
@@VanAgain mine will die completely if I unplug it.
I think it is because you guys drive on wrong side of the road!
