This was a freaking brilliant solution. Probably saved hundreds in labor since the mechanic I called said they’d need to take the column off to get to the drain. Thanks so much!

PERFECT dude!!! Order the brush/snake and did this yesterday on my 2017 Golf Alltrack and it worked like a charm! One thing I'd add... Don't force the brush down the tube, if it should meet a more than a little resistance, be very careful not to push the drain tube off the spigot that it's connected to at the top of the sunroof/A-pillar. I also removed both flapper valves off the end of the drain tubes to (hopefully) ensure they don't clog again! Thanks for this video!

I had a similar problem with my NC (third generation) Miata. There are drains underneath the convertible top and the passenger side was plugged causing water to leak into the passenger side compartment. Miata forums said to use a trombone brush (similar to the brush you recommend) You feed it through the top and pull it through the bottom of the car when it pokes out. Do not pull it back up because there is a flap at the bottom of the drain to keep dirt and water from going up the drain. Pulling it back up will pull the flap up into the drain. The first time I cleaned the drain all kinds of debris came out the bottom of the car. I now have a 2016 GTI SE but rarely open the sunroof so thus far I haven't had any problems. Nice video. Thanks.

I believe the mk7 has a screen at the end of the drain tube.
When cleaning and mod done(bigger holes) under the sunroof recall, I heard about the bug screen looking online.
    '15 golf Sportwagen.
Hopefully you didn't push debris on the screen.
Run alot of water to check.
    Cheers

There's no screen on my 2017 Golf Alltrack... They have small, red rubber flapper valves on the ends of the drain hoses. I removed the ones on mine, but didn't do it in a way that I can't put them back on, if I find out that they should stay in place.

I got a 2017 Golf less than three months ago and had a leak on the passenger side pillar. Took hours to get the parts removed to pull back the headliner enough to see the drain tube was fine. Just now I got my snake from Amazon and gave it a try carefully putting it down the drain. Dirty water started draining. Ran it down the driver side. Brush came out with lots of crud as well. Finished by running hot water down both sides. Water drained quickly. Will test with a hose tomorrow. But seems like the snake did the trick!

I ordered the part recommended by LastHumansGarage and like you... Worked like a charm!!! Snaked both driver and passenger side front drains on my 2017 Alltrack yesterday afternoon. Got a bunch of crap out of the driver side drain, and a bit less out of the passenger side. After I'd finished snaking it, then testing by pouring water into the sunroof channel near the drain, I also removed the small red rubber flapper valves on the end of each drain hose. This will hopefully ensure they don't get clogged again. The only downside of doing that would be if a spider crawls up there to make a nest, but I've saved the brush/snake, so that should be an easy way to push it out should it happen.

@@WHJeffB i get nervous every time someone tries this in case they knock the hose off. but so far, so good.

    • @WHJeffB
      @WHJeffB Рік тому

@@LastHumansGarage I completely understand! The important thing to stress here, is not to force the brush/snake down the drain hose. Even with blockage, it should move fairly freely.
Another UA-cam'r I watched used a length of rubber coated clothesline cable, it worked but I think it was a lot higher risk of pulling something loose.
Thanks again for the video on this... I was looking at a visit to my VW dealer to get this fixed. I've read that there's a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) from VW on this issue, but I'm not sure if it's a Warranty or Recall issue that is fixed free of charge.

I'm aware that this might be different since it's a quite different body but I've got an Octavia 3 RS that has been made on the Golf 7 platform, my front right foot space got flooded somehow and after what I read on the web it seems to be the sunroof drains. From what I know the drains are in the front, behind the engine somewhere, under the black plastic that the golf also has (see 2:03), do you think this tool might be helpful?
    Thank you!

I had blocking sunroof drains on my Mk3 GTI Edition (115 horses) back in the day and had to clean them out. But as long as the water drains nicely, I wouldn't mess with them. If it works, don't try to fix it.. ;-)

    • @LastHumansGarage

no...... it could blow the hoses off the fittings.. then you got a major issue to put them back

  • @bagadonutz5717

The rear drains are not as easy to get at, you need to remove the center plastic panel at the headliner and then pull the drain hoses off in each corner, mine was leaking around the connector on the pass. side. I ran 2 small beads of silicone caulk around the hose and let it dry overnight before I reconnected them, . it’s not difficult but it isn’t a lot of fun either

VW will be doing that. No way I'm doing it myself for a manufacturer defect. For my 2019 Alltrack there is a 7 year, 72,000 mi warranty on the sunroof because of a class action lawsuit against VW. Worst case scenario is it's a bad weld. I've heard of VW giving a person a new car over this, after he took the car in about 5 times over the issue without them being able to fix it.

Noises in sunroof are common. Mine made noises when it was closed, but not when it was opened. You can glue a piece of carpet in the sunroof curtain base (the place upside where you pull it- it's a gray/silver part downside the glass). You can also put the same stick of carpet in the silver/gray frame downside the glass (where the curtain gets into when you open it). It solved all my sunroof noises.

I have a VW Passat C of 2006(2.0 diesel) and i have a problem with the two front sunroof drains and they both are 100% clogged.
I poured some water and the water immediately pooled up on tops of the drain holes.
Before reading the pinned comment, I saw how the guy unclogged the drains and thought okay that makes sens and i will buy that thing from Amazon, but after reading the pinned comment iam now back to square 1 and donot know how to unclog the two front sunroof holes.
I really appreciate if someone can tell me how i can fix this problem myself, coz water is leaking like crazy into my car on a rainy day.
    Cheers!
