I can think of 3 reasons for this to happen, (1) they just closed a deal with a China/India/[insert some other country] company to outsource the work, (2) possibly heard from one of their lobbyist about some government business subsidies coming up soon to help companies through their "tough" times, or, most likely (3) the top brass are close to hitting/missing their next higher bonus tier and need to reduce cost(payroll) to bridge the tier gap until the quarter ends, then they will re-post the positions.

Sears should have been behind the right to repair push years ago .... it would have saved their customer base somewhat... as we nolonger fix anything, it's just throw-away products and appliances, but now corporate america is going to sell us all on "climate change" while SIMULTANEOUSLY making sure products cannot be fixed and we must buy new, and adopt their subscription/rentership society.

@@VioFax this is getting into politics. I' ll try to keep it as apolitical as possible. Solutions to a societal problems are almost always imperfects and prone to be useless. However, doing nothing, you will get the status quo. A cancer that got treated may not go away, and the treatment may be miserable, bankruptcy, but it may also able to keep you alive long enough to enjoy life as long as you can. Companies prefered to keep selling cheap replacable products but they also hated to waste their money, facing the legal court over pollution. Right to repair had already exist to an extent in car repair. Eu Government already mandated that Apple used usb-c, force employers to implement permanent contracts, create the right-to-disconnect, force more data regulations. Do the problems got solved entirely? No, but it helped societie better than not having them at all.

I worked at a company once that opened a new position on my team. I recommended a guy I had worked with in the past, and he was hired. I trained the guy for a couple of weeks, then I was "let go". I'm a software engineer. Every performance review I got was "excellent". I never released any major bugs. No release ever required a rollback. I generally finished projects ahead of schedule. Apparently, after a reorg a couple of months before, my "style" made my new manager "nervous". Given my performance history, that's code for "I just don't like you".

I was a network engineer. 25 yrs in the telecom industry and yes same here. Performance reviews always excellent, any network rollouts I never had a trouble always smooth. Customers would always send me cards during holidays thanking me for my support of their services etc. Then came Polly (kisser from NY). This guy hated me on first meeting. He had no background in engineering, no background in anything software or hardware. He was (drum roll please)..... A damn bartender from Applebees who was friends with one of our stupid VP's.... They hired him and made him our Sr Manager, over my boss, who had a masters in EE from MIT... Well needless to say, I had a Masters from a University but not near as prestigious, regardless. our dept made company money. He outsourced our entire dept to Chennai India. I was let go after 25 yrs and all that idiot could say to me was "We found people better and cheaper". My last day, with security watching me clean out my cubicle, he says "Just for the record, I never liked you". And that's how I ended a 25yr career. I am now a teacher at a really nice school and I tell kids not to trust any corporations. I encourage them to be entrepreneurs, to strive to be their own bosses. If they have to work for a large company, to be their own CEO and leave as soon as they get denied training or passed over or blocked from moving to another dept.. I tell them to always move within a company every two years that longevity means higher cost to a company...

Of course they do. It's just filthy that they keep that information from the person most affected.
I get why, of course. If you know you're getting laid off, there are all sorts of problems.
You could look for and find a new job before they have a replacement, leaving them in a lurch.
You could start networking and/or poaching people in preparation to start your own business or to take with you to a competitor in some fields.
You could start sabotaging your work, destroying important documents, falsifying databases and doing all sorts of stuff that you could claim was accidental.
You could refuse to teach your replacement (that new guy they introduced to you as an intern or as a new colleague, when he was in fact meant to replace you once they drop the axe).
Or you could simply stop working as hard as you had previously been. This one is important if you had been doing a lot of overtime and your bosses know they'd need two or three people to take over your duties if you stopped throwing your back into it.

Michael, if I've learned anything about human beings, it is this. Whenever someone says "it isn't personal...", they are either lying to you or to themselves. Whenever you interact/communicate with another human being, that is ALWAYS personal. There's a reason why that is called "interpersonal relations". It is PERSONAL. As a matter of business decision making, eliminating an entire department/division as a 'layoff" technique was, in this instance, the way senior managers/ceo's/directors ALWAYS justify cost cutting so that they can show the board of directors and the rest of the share holders "Look! I'm taking drastic measures to protect your investments!!! Doesn't this justify me keeping MY job??" Cutting labor is the FIRST thing those sharks use to make the Books look good.

The result was the manager complaining about how much I was costing them in OT. I responded, then hire some more help. That went over like a turd in the punch bowl. Weeks later, she's all smiles while telling me they were switching me from hourly to salaried. I asked her what the pay raise was. The response was that I was ungrateful (meaning no pay raise). I said I would NOT sign on to the change. 6 weeks later, she hired help for HERSELF, and THAT person hired help for me. I'm still hourly. And that's ok. I needed the job since I had moved out of my parents place, and every time I asked what the plan was when the holidays end I was told we'd be notified long in advance if the company decided to let us go. Plot twist: we were all furloughed at the end of the season without warning. They didn't even have the courtesy to tell us not to come in. We all showed up to a manager who's like, "Sorry, not sorry. This is horrible and the worst part is they probably are not going to be able to get unemployment due to the length of time. They KNEW this was happening and didn’t care. Very cold. And then expecting them went to work for the company again. 😮 I also understand it is not their decision and they might have lost their job to tell them. The person narrating is also wrong stating they should question it and do something. Yes they can question it but warning them might have cost them their job as well. I am sorry and I have empathy but I am not risking my livelihood.

I worked for Sears for over a year in the automotive building across the parking lot from the store, and every single week we were not given our checks for that week. The store got theirs on time, but we were always late. I couldn't be happier that they are gone. I hope no one hired these "managers" somewhere else.

As a former employee from Sears, the first thing this woman made was applying to work at Sears in the first place. Ive seen how shady the company can be when it came to their employees. From minimizing hours to the bare minimum to a part time employee a manager doesnt like, making all of these metric sales goals and then going 180 on it by pinpointing something i missed, promising to be moved upwards or to a better department then get sideswiped by someone else that doesnt even qualify for it, etc etc etc i could go on and on.
I loved Sears as it was my first job and the job that paid really, really well for a part time college student. However, when Eddie Lampert took over, everything just went down the shitter. My breaking point was when my gf got brought in from another sears store to manage a new dept and then get let go 8 months later.

I was not offered a pay cut or even part time. There is no LOYALTY and the companies don’t care about us. We’re just a freakin number to them. 😢😢😢 the only one who cared was my manager. She was in tears when she told me I was getting Laid off.

It would piss me off every time. Sometimes I would be let go in the middle of the day. I would have to go back to my desk infront of everyone get my stuff and go. It was humilliating. For that reason I now have my own business.

I'm pretty certain this layoff procedure, word for word, was written by the Sears HR department. The managers were told not to differ from their script, hence their mechanized, seemingly insensitive behavior. I dealt with a similar situation when I was a manager. I had to let a team member go, and HR was all nervous that I wouldn't handle it delicately and that they'd get sued. They didn't.

This is exactly how Sears does this. The managers literally have no idea that it's coming and they have no say in who will be let go. I spent a lot of years with them and this kind of thing is quite normal. You can question upper management all you want and you'll just be brushed off. None of this is right, but it is the way they do things and it's been this way since Sears and Kmart merged.
Way back I was given a month notice that I would be laid off. Then they ended up asking me if I wanted a different position within the company.

Why tell a completely unnecessary lie to people you used for 3 weeks and deceived? Just to make the company seem a little more professional.

Unfortunately the labor court system in India takes a lot of time to fucking decide in employees favor, so if the Indian IT companies lay off employees and the employees decide to band together, the companies can blacklist them by asking other IT companies to refrain from hiring them. I saw Mirror Now's The Urban Debate on this topic, anchored by Faye D'Souza. On this debate, those IT guys who got laid off had to cover their faces and blur their voices in order to prevent companies from recognizing them and asking other IT companies not to hire them.

While this reaction is what people feel at the time, word to the wise, don't say more than you have to in these situations. Threat, anger, random statements can be used against you. Say the wrong thing and they may have grounds to not pay that severance / unemployment.
Nothing that you say after they inform you that you are fired is going to change it. While it might feel good in the moment to vent, it is best to be non committal, don't agree or sign anything on the spot and request they forward documentation to you. Take some time to process everything then take the steps you feel are appropriate(labor grievance / lawyer / etc)

True, but I say: Let 'em have it. More people need to speak up. The public needs a wake up call that Both sides of Congress has sold the country to the sociopaths running corporate america. I think people are in denial, and that somehow they don't want to deal with it, so they avoid reality by tricking themselves into believing " Well.... next time I guess I'll vote for ...." and BOOM... fast forward 3-5 years, nothing fundamentally changes. Instead people have chosen proxy battles rather than the root cause of 99% of the problems this country has: Corporate Monopoly/Oligopoly power and it's FULL capture of BOTH SIDES of Congress.

I agree. The best revenge is to quickly find something else and improve your situation, and/or sue them (without warning) if you have actual grounds. Or, if the opportunity presents itself, turn the tables on them. I once worked for a "family" business (i.e. Nepotism Inc.) and got let go after two years - zero notice, zero severance. Company was "losing money" "I wasn't a very good...." - although he kept two of his kids on, one of whom was incompetent, the other was paid to come in and do nothing. I just calmly said "thanks for the opportunity, turned in my key, gathered my stuff and left as requested. A few months later, the former boss/owner calls me; he (being the disorganized clown that he is) "can't find a username and password" for a critical online software program, asks if I might have it (I did; some people ARE organized), and that getting a new username and password was going to cost him at least a day worth of work. I told him I'd find it and get back to him. Then I ghosted him. I saw him at a professional event early the next year - of course he had nothing to say.

I was fired this one time from an office job. They called me into the office where I saw my supervisor, my manager, and an HR person all staring me down. The supervisor liked me, the manager didn't, and HR didn't care. After talking down to me for a bit, they handed me a check then just kept staring at me like they were waiting for me to say or do something. Then the Manager says, "So do you have anything to say for yourself?" I said, "Is there anything at all I could say that might change this?" When the manager immediately vomited up a "No" I just stood up, turned my back to them and walked out.

      Yes! I second this.
I won a settlement agreement against a startup company last year. I remained calmed and documented everything. I was being guided my last week by an attorney I hired, and I didn't accept their severance nor sign anything. I was only there about four months, and many lawyers said no to my claim; however, all you need is one yes.
I had emotional control and intelligence.
Never tell the company you have an attorney(will sue, etc.). Your attorney will reach out and take over the conversation.

Interesting....if you call ANY competent contractor for home imporvement / work around the home (i.e: Window replacement, repairs, etc),..they'll tell you they're booked out for months. Like 2 months to get an estimate to set a time to start work. Sears must utterly SUCK at this business model to not have thier contractors 110% booked...or they hired total inept / unqualified people or thier reputation is such that no-one will hire them. Which I gusss is a reasonable assumption since no-one I know would use sears services for anything, even changing tires. They are considered the bottom of the barrel in the services industry. But wow, to have such a labor backlog in the industry and be laying off. That's a major indictment of management right there.

My son is a contractor and he just pushed my bathroom remodel out to the end of next year 😂. It was supposed to be happening around March/April and he just told me 2 days ago when he came to grout the floor he laid, “well, mom, we can talk about the bathroom at the end of next year.” That’s cold, son, lolol. He’s booked absolutely solid. Which I am very happy for him. He even asked me to not post his number anywhere right now, he can’t take on anymore work. He’s alluded to having to fix these “name brand” contractors work in the past. He’s happy they exist, they create a lot of work for him, but he gets really grieved charging what he should to people that were just harmed by these shoddy companies. (He doesn’t charge enough. Not nearly enough. The porcelain work he did here is gorgeous.) Yet these companies charge top dollar and leave their customers with garbage results. Absolute garbage. He’s shown me pics of the damage caused. Never call Sears, Lowes, Home Depot. And any good contractor should be happy to show you tons of jobs and have references. They also shouldn’t get offended if you ask. They love showing it off. Good ones do. Good ones offer to show without being asked.

I'm not siding with the employer but it's usually standard practice from the IT department to disable all access prior to their notification. Unfortunately i had to do it during those tough times (i work in IT). It's done to prevent the employee from doing anything drastic like leaking company private data after their layoff. I hated doing it when i was asked to, it just really sucks.
