Halogen Reactivity Series Demonstration

Chlorine, bromine and iodine are reacted with chloride, bromide and iodide. 6 reactions are used to compile a reactivity series of the halogens. These results can be explained using periodic trends.
I2 + Cl- NR
I2 + Br- NR
Br2 + Cl- NR
Br2 + I- forms iodine (black/violet)
Cl2 + Br- forms bromine (orange)
Cl2 + I- forms iodine (black/violet)
The chlorine is most reactive as it has the fewest occupied energy levels and thus is able to exert larger forces on electrons.

Hi Scott,
Is it possible to substitute bromine and chlorine with other formulations and if so what would you suggest? Finding it hard to obtain bromine and chlorine on its own so it would be great if other solutions containing bromine and chlorine can be used as substitute for these reactions !

How did you keep the bromine and chlorine from fuming? I thought they both naturally fumed in air.

These are both in water solution, but some of the chlorine and bromine gas gets out when the solutions are made and used. When I run the demo I do it by our fume hood with the sash open and then get the solutions into the hood as soon as I can until I can dispose of the halogens.

I see. That makes sense. I cannot see any gas through the video, and it's obviously not enough gas to necessitate gloves.
