    My wife really helps with transcribing, she has a really good ear and points me in the right direction when I'm lost.

    Thank you for being so honest about your process! I'm beginning to transcribe for myself now (a lot more easier tunes) and half the time I wanna throw my bass out of the window cause I've convinced myself that I can't do that it. This helps a lot!! Never give up! Thank you 🙏

    Great stuff on transcribing, and in essence, learning. As always. Thanks! Seeing you in Nashville in a few weeks. Really looking forward to it.

    Janek,
    Have you every heard of Ted Greene? He as a guitarist in LA who passed away in 2005, but there is a ton of his lesson material online as well as his books on chords and soloing.

    I've finally caught up with vlogs!) Yay!
    Thanks for these vlogs as they are very inspirational and motivating! Hope you'll keep doing them for a while!)
    There is a first question from me:
    Single cut vs Double cut, is there a difference? Why do you play and have your signature model made as single cut?

    Great and inspiring video! Pat's Roland GR300 has an octave shift that he's most likely using here, making it possible to hit those extra-high notes!

    "Repetition is your best friend..." You bet!
    Thanx for the repeated reminders over time now. I don't think this can be emphasized too much. Several of the top online marketers I've studied with stress it...~and~ that of taking pen in hand [prefer pencil as well myself] ; there is much hard science behind studies on the learning pathways of the neural net when it comes to the attitude ~as in landing approach when plane hits runway~ by which the currents meet the synapses so to speak, blablabla. 'Reverting" to handwriting: faster assimilation plus greater long-term retention. And more.
    I dearly appreciate the GREAT information you're sharing abt your process on this [and on the vlog at large] ; it involves one of the next important steps in re-creating myself after 20 years of fallowness...this time around as a 'highly competent' musician/composer rather than merely a poser which I actually pulled off handily to considerable success and profit when making a living in music, previous. I.E., while not doing anything more than I had to do make money, impress ppl and frankly, get by I might add. A whole new world now with the deeper understanding and associated...passion.
    Cheers, Dion

    If you're supposed to not slow the music down when transcribing because music happens in real time when you play it, by the same logic, shouldn't you also not rewind the music when transcribing? Not trying to be blunt, just curious to hear your thoughts.
    Loving the vlog, keep up the great work!

    I’m hearing an A diminished (whole/Half) scale morph into an E minor blues scale...you can also use the B (Half/Whole) diminished scale too...toggling back and forth with these scales with interesting phrasing and rhythmic ideas helps me create my own language. Pay attention to the resolution points, this is what makes it work

    One thing that might help your playing in general is paying closer attention to your breathing. I noticed you taking some pretty big inhales there. I don't know if you are holding your breath or over exhaling but in general that can effect your hearing and can cause you to unnecessarily tense up and make it harder to play.

    Are you really "a trapped guitar player in a bass player's body, 70's era George Benson" as someone mentioned a few episodes ago?

    I am slowing down sometimes anyway. You say, Janek, "music happens in real time, so don't slow down". I that case I would add: "and don't rewind" 😂 if it's real time it's real time, there's no going back ;) Just trolling this older video, I am only relatively fresh follower about 2 years now. My favorite bass channel!

    Hey Janek, I have been listening a lot to Pat Metheny recently. I am 17 and hoping to go to the University of Hartford next year and will have Nat Reeves as an upright bass teacher! I have already had a lesson with him and he is a very nice and a down to earth guy with insane chops!

      One more thing Janek, what are good tunes for someone just starting to transcribe?

    • @carlogarella4304
      @carlogarella4304 7 років тому

      I'm not Janek, but maybe I can help you. Chet Baker is a good start, he is very melodic and quite simple to follow. Frank Sinatra is another good one, but I'd say that every singer is a good starting point. First standards I transcribed were
      - [ ] Autumn Leaves (Chet Baker version is easy, but Cannonball Adderley with Davis is the most famous one)
      - [ ] All Of Me
      - [ ] Blue Bossa
      - [ ] Satin Doll

    Transcribing is about hearing and imitating what you hear and in the case of Pat, a very special attention should lean on his articulation. First sing the solo, second how he articulates it, and then, eventually write it down although thos is not necessary because ....

    Get the key with your instrument then put it down and do it all by ear. There's the challenge 👍😁👌

  • @macabre2007
    @macabre2007 7 років тому +2

    Ummm don't slow it down? well if you slow it down you can speed it up, there are ways and means of learning something, and certainly those who study overtones often slow a wav down, to hear how it sounds slowed down, this great disservice also negates the fact that muscle memory just happens in real time, it doesn't - so slow it down, learn it, then once you have the right fingerings gradually speed up - what do you think metronomes were created for?

    • @dedoonbass
      @dedoonbass 6 років тому +1

      Clearly you didn't listen, maybe slow down the video and watch it again

    • @macabre2007
      @macabre2007 6 років тому

      ok snide one, maybe you didn't listen because this poster said, always play at normal speed, in real time - and transcribe from that, well of course you can always train yourself up, to be that fast so I assume he mentioned - gradually improving, rather than having an aptitude due to some successful genetic inheritance.

    • @dedoonbass
      @dedoonbass 6 років тому

      Janek said, Transcribe at tempo and then build up your technical facility by slowing it down with the metronome. I don't see how your response makes your original comment constructive or logical, you seem to think he was implying that you should never slow it down at all which is not true.
      Unless I am not understanding you, I dunno.

    • @macabre2007
      @macabre2007 6 років тому

      well If that's what he said, I suppose yes you could do that, but what about learning it at a slower rate, and then speeding up with a metronome - or did he say that? because I can only understand from what you mentioned the opposite. The speed of metheny solo's is difficult enough, I can play Tell it all' solo, but I had to slow it down to transcribe it. A method I used for two decades.

    • @dedoonbass
      @dedoonbass 6 років тому

      Put the notes to paper at tempo and slow it down with a metronome later is what he said. He is not the only high level jazz musician to share this opinion, John Patitucci comes to mind. You are certainly entitled to your method, but you have to wonder why Pat Metheny didn't have to ask the band to slow down so he could hear the ideas he wanted to convey?
      My issue with your comment is that you ignored the second part of this process which Janek describes in detail and proceeded to draw your own conclusions while ill informed. If you watch the entire video and listen to what he is saying, you will see that the process is quite logical and has proven results.
