Red Kaloi Fly Fishing in Borneo Kalimantan Part 2

  • We finally arrive at the village in the middle of nowhere. This is where we will get to the river and head to our campground. Or at least that was the plan.
    But Mother Nature had other plans for us and tested our resilience.
    We journey into Kalimantan Borneo to fly fish for the fabled gear-busting red kaloi. This fish has managed to break fishing gear on every trip so far and some broken hearts. But first we need to endure the journey. Comment below your thought about the video or leave me a question.
    The red kaloi are also known as the red giant gourami and only found in the island of Borneo.

      Thanks bro. Wonder how this one compares to the lunker you caught?

    • @affendigoh3715
      @affendigoh3715 5 місяців тому

      Not sure how to compare bro. Think it's 2 different scenarios. Yours was intended and truly epic; the travel to target this specie, the exotic location which is very primal and the conditions which wasn't really favourable...bad weather, frustrating wait, big waters with fast flows. And even the fishing is challenging, takes a bit of skill to present that large fly to the targetted lies on a moving boat and to land a large fish like that with all the snags about. The fishing gods were with you for sure. Mine was totally an unexpected catch. Had a hunch there was going be some big fish like a mahseer or sebarau at that tree trunk as we had some explosive missed takes before that but had never expected a kaloi to take a chernobyl. And I was fishing on solid ground with the only snag being that big sunken tree trunk. Just had to prevent it from going back there and it became easy to manage the fish. Just got lucky it didnt chew off the 15lb tippet after seeing those teeth. But one common thing for sure is that we can count our lucky stars to be able to land one of these fishes this size let alone a kaloi, truly a fish of a lifetime.

    Red Kaloi usually in a pair male and female ... The Male more red more large then female ...

      @SportFishingAsia  4 місяці тому

      I guess when spawning yes they’ll be a pair. That’s correct the male are much larger with a prominent hump on the head and thick lips.

    hi sir, may i ask how long was the total length of your leader and what is the poundage for the butt section of the leader? i hear that you used a 30lb tippet with a 40lbs bite tippet @ 22:52. may i ask did you "over lined" your fly line so that you are able to load your fly rod faster and cast better? it seems that certain stretch of the river can be quite narrow. thank you for sharing your video and knowledge. last, may i ask will you be doing a big hopper dry fly tying video one of these days? hahha! i m so sorry that i appeared to be so greedy in wanting to know more info about red kaloi fly fishing. it is because your video excites me so much! joseph @ singapore

    • @SportFishingAsia
      @SportFishingAsia  4 місяці тому +1

      Hey Joseph, no problem at all…happy to share what I know.
      Yes I joined a 40lb section to a tapered leader that has a 30lb tippet. The total length was probably 8-9ft. It was experimental as that was my first trip there (already planned another trip).
      Many other anglers before used very heavy leaders 60lb to even 80lb I heard as the red kaloi is very strong and you need to get them out of rivers with quite a lot of structures. But the problem is people often end up with broken lines and rods. Most fly lines are rated 30-50lbs in the core so a heavier leader may result with broken fly lines.
      This is challenging fishing especially on the fly. I guess you need a little luck when hooked up.
      I did not over line. This is down to gear selection and individual preference. Nothing wrong with underlining and over lining. Use what you’re comfortable with.
      I did not find any stretches of river here that was very narrow. But watch out for overhanging vines, branches and everything that’s out to grab your fly!
      I’ll try to put up a video of tying the big hopper. Can’t promise when…lots of videos to edit 😥😄
      You should go try fly fish for the red kaloi, quite an experience and a formidable fish to catch. Let me know if you need any help. Cheers, JW
