Performed on a 180m strip of private land.
The Spitfire’s design is still making it a looker today. The MGB looks like an old British roadster. Grazie, Signore Michelotti! 😊
I was actually expecting the MGB to outpace the Spitfire by more. In the end, I'd take the MGB for performance and the Spitfire for looks. That said, the real beauty of both these cars is found via the enjoyment of top-down motoring. Where the sound of the exhaust while running through the gears easily trumps any exhilaration provided by the resulting acceleration (or lack thereof). Speaking of slow, my first car was a 1972 Spitfire MK IV that I bought in 1979. (Quite the rarity in rural Illinois, USA.)
My first car was a 69 Spitfire I bought in 70. So much fun!
Now I'm having that kind of fun in my 2001 Miata.
@@mikefannon6994 I can relate as these days I have a 2005 S2000. Roadsters might not be for everyone, but it seems that for some of us they have long lasting appeal.
The true contest for the MGB would be the Triumph GT6, with its 2-litre 6cylinder, which produced pretty much as the MGs B-series. In period there were road tests comparing the GT6 and the MGB GT. Unfortunately Triumph never produced a roadster version of the GT6, which they should have, though plenty of people have done conversions. When I lived in the UK in the 1990s I owned a lovely white Mk.III GT6 and later another Mk.III in Mimosa Yellow with the 2.5 litre engine from a Triumph saloon - now that was a car! I had a mate who owned a stunning Mk.II GT6 and we regularly hit the Heathrow Tunnel late at night, side by side in our GT6s, the noise echoing off the tunnel walls was amazing! Great days they were. Later on I also owned one of the last Triumph Mk.I saloons built in manual form in Conifer Green, lovely car. But I'm also an MG fan and back in OZ owned a number of MGBs, and later in UK an MGC GT Downton tuned Stage 3 and a converted MGB GT to V8 - which was a wolf in sheeps clothing, it looked stock 4-cylinder from the outside, no V8 badges etc.
Given the choice of cars, I'd probably choose the Spitfire... I like the styling much more.
Spitfire 1500 vs MG Midget 1500 ???
The Mk V Spitfire with 71bhp would be very close I reckon!
As an owner of a '70 MGB and a '69 Spitfire, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I'd be interested to see the MGB up against a Fiat 124 Spider which I also own (mine is a '78).
Great to hear and thank you very much! That would be a close race between the MGB and Fiat... which car do you reckon would win?
@@webbsofweybridgeclassiccar7944 Hard to tell. The Fiat (engine with displacement: 1756 cm to the MGB's 1798 cc) feels a little more lively driving-wise though it is heavier (1052 kg / 2319 lbs to the MGB's 2030 lb (920 kg)), plus it has a standard 5 speed transmission compared to the MGB's standard of only a 4 speed. Given the close 0- 60 mph match (Fiat 11.9 sec / MGB 11.8 sec), only the result at the final distance would tell.
@@arnoldpaine4973 it definitely is a hard race to call... we're not sure who would win!
Would also love to see this one, it'd be a tough call.
Here in sunny California USA I raced my 1967 MGB against my father who was driving his 1970 Triumph Spitfire back in 1980. I of course won hands down.
That's amazing and we are glad to hear that this video has brought back a happy memory!
I never lost a race in my 327 cu. in. V8 powered Austin Healey 100, 0-60mph in < 4 seconds …
my first car was a 1964 MGB which was a wonderful experience. Three Spitfires followed years later and now my lust for V8 torque and exhaust song is satisfied by my 1967 Sunbeam Tiger …. Still miss my Healey though 😢
A friend of mine had a B identical to this one, all be it that the steering wheel was on the other side. These races are really great fun to watch and as an owner of a '77 B for the last 30 years I will keep tuning in.
Thank you very much and glad to have you on board! Hoping to release a new race very soon
I thought the cameraman in the back was following on a bicycle until I saw the drone in the next shot 🤣
but i still would take the spitfire over the mg, i had a 1968 spitfire mk 3 for over 30 years and triumph fan the spitfire will always win for me, but i like mgs.
TR4A v MGB? Might be fun.
The TR4A is coming up soon, don't worry!
Genuinely surprised by that result. Can't wait for the next one though. Best car. I reckon the DeLorean will take it. I've driven Bs and your DeLorean. The Stainless Steel Dream Machine has a lot more low down and still isn't hugely heavy. Placing my bet now.
The drag race series continues to throw us a lot of surprises! That is why we enjoy doing them so much
The two cars fit in the same category, but driving them is quite a different experience. The unibody design of the MG makes for a much more solid feeling vehicle, compared to the body on frame construction of the Spitfire, which also leads to the B having much more efficient use of space (loads of legroom, for example.) Also, the B's engine is a much better design than the Triumph, more stout design with better and bigger bearings. Far more durable when pushed hard.
At 6'1" and long in the leg, I don't have my Spitfire seat all the way back. Our son has an MGB and if anything, the Spitfire has more legroom! All your other comments... I agree.
Put a TR4 against it they were out to get the same customers back in the day!
Very good point... we'll release this race later in the summer
fun bunch of races. mgb for the win, but you don't have to go fast to look good. to my eyes the spitfire wins the beauty contest. so much so i bought one. same color too.
🤣 the drone kept up the whole race 🤣
Triumph GT6 vs MGB GTV8 would be a nice race. I'm sure the MG would win but I just want to listen to the soundtrack
We agree. In fact, we used to have a GT6 over 5 years ago and are on the hunt for another one!
I'd put my gt6 up for that race. Although think you may well be right on the outcome.
Loved the video. Two of my fav cars but B just rocketed away.
Thank you very much... they're two of our favourite cars too!
Lol...............tortoise v slug shoot-outs are always fun!
Grate video
Thanks Noah!
Please Fiat 2300S Coupe vs MGB
surprised it was that close with the extra power of the mgb,
Driver difference. MGB had better launch and spitfire guy was short shifting.
"I was brought up on rear wheel drive cars so.." my grandma could do a better drift on her zimmer frame.
We look forward to that video
Holding a drift with an open diff? - now that would be interesting...
Looked more like a nicely exuberant bit of cornering on a damp road and quickly sorted with a bit of opposite lock. Not as easy as it looks...
Tr6 vs the mg would be more evenly matched
We reckon the TR6 would be a comfortable winner
i just bought a spitfire
That's great to hear. How are you finding life with your new Spitfire?
I'm sorry.
Race a Triumph vitesse saloon, see if really is the ‘two seater beater’
We'll get looking into this. Good idea!
Mk2 if you can 😉
Dont fold the MGBs top like that! You'll ruin it quickly!
A GT6 against the MG B would be a better match.
That should of been up and down the road,
Get a gt6 on
We'll look into it!
