    You've got to remember that miniskirts in the 60s were often seen as a symbol of the feminist movement and women's liberation. Designers like Mary Quant, Yves Saint Laurent and André Courrèges popularised shorter hemlines which were embraced by many young women as a sign of freedom and rebellion against traditional norms. Feminist icons like Gloria Steinem often wore miniskirts to public appearances further cementing the garment's status as a symbol of empowerment. So although our 21st century sensibilities see Starfleet women in miniskirts as a bit sexist now, at the time they were seen as progressive and modern. Costume designer William Ware Theiss argued that the futuristic setting justified more daring and unconventional attire, reflecting the idea of a more liberated and equal future. Now we don't have that cultural context, we just see women in short skirts.

      Thank you for putting the miniskirts into the context of their time! I didn‘t know they were worn as a symbol of empowerment. Now it makes sense, and I am delighted.😊

    Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) and Grace Lee Whitney (Rand) WANTED to wear those miniskirts. Not necessarily because they wanted men to ogle them, but they were both dancers in real life. They worked hard for those legs and wanted to show them. To us guys, though it was just a bonus.

      ‘I have no idea if this is true or not, but I read that in addition to wanting to show off those dancing legs, the two of them made a game of seeing how high they could hike their skirts up before someone would say something.

      @@blockmasterscott Yes I read that, too. Nichelle Nichols was notorious for it. She would yank her skirt up and bunch it back so she was actually sitting on her pantyhosed ass and showing a lot of thigh. The director would notice and say "she's doing it again!". Look at the episode "A Taste of Armageddon" and "The Galileo Seven" for examples of this. Also union rules required the uniforms be cleaned after every wearing and the velour costumes would shrink badly. You notice this in later episodes of season 1. Kirk's sleeves and Uhura's dress seems to get shorter and shorter. "This Side of Paradise" shows an example of Uhura's shrinking tunic.

    From my brother who spent a couple of decades in uniform "The stripes on the original series uniforms were designed intentionally to be reminiscent of current day navy stripes on uniforms for officers. For all folks who served in the military, they would be able to tell others what the ranks meant, to give folks watching a frame of reference. These uniform stripes had been used for hundreds of years on Earth, so why would they change?" He went on to point out that while he served, there were always military posters on the walls of virtually every base he served at, that showed all the ranks of all the branches so that anyone would always know, who was whom, so enlisted would always know whom the officers were.

    Red is also Engineering.
    Captain = 2 1/2 stripes

    Lt. Commander = 1 1/2 stripes.

      NBC had been broadcasting a few shows in color, or part of them was in color, in 1953. It was in 1965 that network shows began transitioning to color, and by 1966, virtually all of them were. NBC would be insistent that a show on its network show off color where possible.

      @@desu38 Of course not. My folks didn't buy a color TV set until 1967, and that on an Air Force major's salary. And even then, they only bought it, as we still had the 23" B&W console set, due to a hefty insurance payout when all their household belongings, in storage for four years while we lived overseas in Japan, were lost in a warehouse fire as Dad PCS'ed from Yokota AB to Andrews AFB. Else, they'd have waited until the old set crapped out. It cost about $650, which they could pay cash for, but that's be like about FIVE GRAND today! It was common to finance a TV set, and many TV-appliance stores sold "Repos". Folks these days just don't appreciate how inexpensive and better TVs are...more fruits of using "money" and pursuing material wealth, rather than just "improving ourselves"!

    The "redshirt" idea actually made sense if the actual part of service of the red shirt wearing crew members is taken into account. The "red shirts" that often get killed are the security officers/crew almost every time. It's literally their job to put themselves between the rest of the crew and danger. So they're the people most likely to first encounter a dangerous person or creature and most likely to engage it rather than flee from it.

    Uhura also wore an avocado green (filmed as gold) uniform in the first couple of episodes that were filmed, as she had a "command" position, but it was changed to red early in the series, though she was still in a command position, even if we didn't get to see that play out in TOS. Because of the times, and some last minute rewriting, she was never left in charge of the bridge, though she should have been.

    The Original Series "gold" was actually a light olive green, but because of the fabric and the lighting and how they did color photography then, they appeared a dirty greenish gold. It wasn't for command either, it was for tactical and operations. Coomodore Stocker, who is on his way to Starbase 10 to assume command, is wearing a red top in The Deadly Years.

    "Which frankly looked like something from the local craft store"
    Leave out the random criticisms and negative comments. That's not how a Star Trek fan approaches this show. We understand the limitations of TV budgeting and appreciate the great talent of Bill Theiss, the Costume designer behind so much Star Trek cannon.
    The rank insignia of the original series is not hard to understand. It is consistent throughout the series run.
    The lowest rank is an Ensign and has no braid (Chekov). Then Lieutenant, which is one solid braid (Uhura, Sulu). Then Lieutenant Commander which is one solid braid topped with one dashed braid (Scotty and Dr. McCoy). Then full Commander (Spock) that is two solid braids. The highest rank on board ship is the Captain and his sleeve has a two solid braids with a dashed braid separating the two.
    When doing research for the art production on the original series, producers reached out to NASA for advice on what the astronaut of the future would be wearing. Everything they described sounded like long underwear. So Bill Theiss took that basic concept, added bright color and gold bitts here and there and some black boots and the iconic uniform was born.

    The mini skirts were originally not mini skirts, but long tunics and supposed to be unisex... surprised you didn't mention this. Furthermore, being old enough to have been there at the time, most miniskirts were worn with extremely short leg 'outer briefs' of the same material - kinda like the classic bikini.
    But then, you're young and I'm old.

    The idea that different uniforms were used for different duty stations, while interesting, doesn't hold up when you add Voyager to the mix. They used the same uniforms as DS9... and every officer, regardless of duty station, utilized the same uniform in any given series.
    Lower Decks probably does what they do for the same reason they do just about anything: to poke fun at the silly decisions of the previous series and movies.
    Also, whoever wrote this sucks at research. The Original Series ranks are just standard US Naval ranks, including the insignia. Also, the color-code was fairly specific: Gold= Command; Red= *Support,* which included Engineering, Security, Communications, etc; Blue= Science, of which Medical was a part of.

    Fun fact, if I remember - Gold in TOS was actually olive green, like Kirk;s wrap-tunic, but it showed as gold on camera #shrug
    As to Spock "smiling" - the character, like on most pilots, was in development; they don't even mention his race. Later Spock was referred to as "Vulcanian", later shorten to Vulcan. I just get annoyed at newer fan, who don't know the history of the series, and try to make things that are not... 🤬
    As to Number One aka Barret - the Studio ding-dongs didn't want a woman in charge, and also, "Get rid of the guy of the ears". According to legend, Gene said he switched #1's characteristics i.e. not emotional etc to Spock, and later married Barret. Gene joke he couldn't do it the other way around 😮🙃😉
    Mini-skirt story from Terri Garr on TOS - I heard recently she was miffed at her outfit... Apparently, Roddenberry wanted the dress shorter and shorter 😮🤬

      Removing Number One was the correct move. For 1964, her character wasn't credible and would put off most viewers. Although she would have popped out highly intelligent children. However, Yeoman Colt would have been the fuck-toy. And Pike could still bang Vina. The novelization alludes to the situation becoming "Polyg", but even hinting at that on TV in the mid-Sixties wouldn't have flown.

    • @Rocketsong
      @Rocketsong 2 дні тому

      There is "Gene's" story, and then there is what actually happened, which is the studio execs thought it was scandalous that Gene's mistress was given a premium role. They had no problem with Gene running a casting couch. But this was too blatant, even for the time.

    • @selfdo
      @selfdo День тому

      @@Rocketsong Maybe that was internal studio politics; who knows. But the general public had no idea who this "cerebral" actress was. She'd appeared in bit parts in several TV shows and movies, but at age 32, by the standards of the time, her "starlet" years, if ever she was attractive enough to be one, were fairly much over. She did the "Number One" role just fine, the issue wasn't her performance at all, or that she was cast, it was the character herself. American audiences, WOMEN included, save for the dykes in the closet, wouldn't then accept a female authority figure, save for something like a juvenile court judge. Plus, her character seemed too "butchy", although the Magistrate in the pilot (deleted for "The Menagerie") says that she often has fantasies, presumably at least romantic if not erotic, about Captain Pike, so she's still likely just "hetero", or, at worst, "Bi" (not a problem for TODAY, unfortunately). FWIW, the Magistrate also shares Yeoman Colt's thoughts, which embarrasses her and angers Pike, that she'd previously considered Pike "unapproachable", but now realizes her opportunity, and her favorable factors being her being a "yute" and strength, plus "unusually STRONG female drives" (e.g., she's "hot to trot"). A bit much for mid-1960s TV, and Gene should have known better. Some of the "misogny" of the 1960s is reflected in some of the causal scenes. Pike's impatient with Colt, who's obviously nervous, and not simply because she likes the Captain, but this is probably her first deep space assignment, especially working on the Bridge. He's not accustomed to having women, especially young ones, on his immediate staff, and makes it clear he's not used to a woman working there, though with Number One, it's "different" (how?). I can only speculate that her competence and later-demonstrated coolness under stress has more than earned her respect from her male colleagues and superiors and confidence she's up to her First Officer position.

At least with the REAL Navy (USN) or even the "Puddle Pirates" (USCG) there NO ambiguity as to who a senior enlisted member is. Furthermore, all the Enterprise marks should have had an E-8 as the "Ship's Chief", and the First Officer, in dealing with enlisted performance evaluation and minor counseling, would include him if he knew what was good for him. The Chief of the Ship would also be present at any "Captain's Mast".

      The way Hollywood works they like to call a LtJg 'Captain' if he's the OIC of even a PT boat. So being called 'Captain' or being the 'Captain' isn't necessarily representative of rank by these knuckleheads. The movie 'The Finests Hours', comes to mind where Chris Pine (also a Capt Kirk lol) was being called 'Captain' while his rank was a Coast Guard seaman lol.
      The worst ones in the US military are the Warrant officers if you ask me... Their insignia is as simple as it gets, but they have to have the most number of unofficial names of any...
