3 Climbers Caught in Rock Avalanche Crossing Dangerous Couloir

- This video was captured as the party attempts to cross a dangerous couloir. The rocks fall from the top of the Plan Glacier high above.
Aiguille Du Grepon, Chamonix
If you can dodge a boulder you can dodge a ball
The other friend thought it would be funny to roll boulders at them. That friend is no longer invited to events where loose big rocks are involved.
I said "those rocks arent that big" then I saw the humans
And, can you imagine a marble striking you in the face at 50mph? Doesn't take much.
an avalanche.... 2 rocks come down!!
More than 2, and fist sized ones as well.
Dangerous stuff.
It's the small stuff that also went flying towards them because of those 2 rocks.
@@BaronvonMoorland there were at least 2 the size of their torso too

"Looks like they are okay. I am just going to yell nonsense at them."
Rock avalanches: A common form of mass movement where the transported material is dry rock or (low-temperature) ice that is fragmented before or during slope failure. ... Prevalent on steep slopes, rock avalanches are rapid and often involve the entrainment of slope material.
This video: A few small boulders.
Have you ever been hit by a small object moving very fast, probably not you nitwit.
“A few small boulders” yeah…try getting hit with a boulder the size of your torso or head travelling at speed…down the side of a mountain…with little room for cover.
Probably bigger the closer you get. Like when the small boulder is closing in on your skull. Probably HUGE at that point.
They are pretty sizeable and could kill you boulders
The shouting is making the rocks fall
Can you explain why he stays in the open?
I would love to just chill behind that nice big rock near him and wait for the danger to pass.
first he ran blindly in panick , then he changed tactic: standing still in the open and dodge them with a step to the left/right, its what i would have done. taking cover is also a good option but not for me , if its a big bolder i dont want to be a sitting duck
@@happyheals3755 taking cover is the only logical option if you want to survive. Everything else is fucking stupid.
@@Fischjesicht yeah, but the first person is far away from the shelter. The other person who running seems close to big boulders. so dodging is the only option he have to survive.
@@Fischjesicht I agree.
@@WikiZeruel It's not rocket science.
It seems to me that trying to outrun rocks rolling down a mountainside is akin to trying to swim against a rip-tide; one should instead move sideways to get out of the danger area.
🍻
This is known as "doing the Wile E. Coyote".
I see you're going the same "Mother Nature's dangers" rabbit hole as me. Switching from sneaker waves to rock falls here.
...the phrase "Where Angels fear to tread" comes to mind.
...or exist
Um eh?
Human Plinko, Bob Barker is having a chuckle up in game show heaven.
Time to pull out a new pair of boxers from the backpack.
That is right there is
absolutely the appropriate use of the phrase "holy shit"!
Whistling and yelling to bring down more rocks. What great friends!
The sun warming the glaciers above late in the day is what brings down rocks. Trained mountaineers know not to traverse under these areas late in the day. The group placed themselves in great danger.
🤨🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻
It doesn't work like that at all.
RIP headphone users
There are a lot of boarders along the debris field. Says, beware!
If you ever find yourself in this situation running South probably the absolute wrong direction east or west falling stones don’t turn right or left
What's omitted in the title is they were dodge ball champions in primary school.
They say bigfoot likes throwing rocks
So the people recording it shout which can cause more rock falls?
where it is ?? i want to check it out
“Avalanche” or not it still could have killed them. They were lucky.
Thanks captain obvious
@@andrewcheyne9917 I’m allowed to say whatever i like in comments. Doesn’t mean you have to be a jerk in your replies. But i guess you too can say whatever you like.
@@budgiebreder sorry if I hurt your feelings mate I just thought it was a bit daft. Human sized rocks tumbling down a mountain at lightning speed and you felt the need to tell us it could've killed them
@@andrewcheyne9917 well when i actually wrote the comment every single other comment was too busy arguing if it was a rock slide, avalanche, or a couple of rolling boulders. The title says avalanche. I figure it doesn’t matter what its called. Regardless of a name it’s still deadly and its not really worth arguing over. Soooo i posted a comment calling it what it is.
Considering the petty battle in the comments a sane if obvious comment that no-one can argue with, even if stating the obvious, made sense to me.
But alas i was wrong. You managed to still pick at my comment in 3 small words. Thank you internet bully. You have made the world a better place.
@@budgiebrederlol chill out mate I was only havin a laugh. Never realised you were replying to the other comments because it wasnt really directed at anyone.
Holy crap -- that got the pit o' the stomach going!
Napolitano dynamite? Is that you?
You forgot to put in the description "jackass makes excessively loud whistles and yells to try to kill others with boulders"
That was me on the bottom left. That was scary.
I thought that was bacon before I clicked
0:29 Dude, this isn't the time to fucking stand there and admire the clouds. MOVE.
Just love the guy staring up the slope toward the source of the landslide in the end. He clearly did not understand the nature of the danger.
@Robert Hunt The problem being. the REAL problem is, what are his chances if the whole slope gives way? He should have been cautiously heading for the available cover.
Bowling.
A 3 Rock avalanche?
Bowling for climbers
HEY, MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO DOWN.
HEY, MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO DOWN.
HEY, MAYBE YOU SHOULD GO DOWN.
HEY, MAYBE YOU SHOULD JUST STAND THERE.
BRILLIANT !
😬
No. Down is the wrong direction. You can't outrun the slide. Go to the side and find some cover behind larger boulders.
That’s scary as fuck! It’s not like a ball rolling down a hill... those rocks could of kicked into any one at any point. Scary shit!
The mother earth lives
Ridiculous! It is just lose earth and it is gravity.
This happened to us on a main trail when and animal triggered a slide above us
Dude sounds like Jesse Pinkman
Yes. Yelling, screaming or whistling sharply is always helpful. Hey climbers.. it makes you appear as complete Yahoos. Take your 30 second video to upload then scream your guts out.🙄
Did you ever think that the mountain doesnt want you on it. Seriously, nature fights back!!
Yes, gravity allows hard objects to fall on you from above and the weather plus snow/ice conditions can be unpredictable. It all makes it a dangerous place to be despite climbing risk management.
Wow I like it.
3 rock avalanche....wow
why?
Then ya screamed out loud just to tempt another
Here's an idea guys, esp. the one lower down the mountain: Don't run towards and stand at the place all the rocks are piled up! It seems to me this is where most falling debris is headed...
Avalanche???
Really? So a couple of rocks rolling down a mountain is an avalanche? Smh.
Very dangerous.
Rock and roll
Still waiting for that Avalanche, saw a few boulder fall though..
Spread it out, eh.
I guess firing 1 round is a hail of bullets.
Stare a casa invece di andare a rompersi le corna in montagna!
Dude you have to be damn well kidding me right
Lethal hobby.
🤔 Ahhhhh?????

Yet more nonsense
three rocks are hardly a landslide.
seeing all the dead ice, im sure there was a glacier before, thanks to climate change its gone and the mountain is destabilized
Nino, I’m sure the glaciers are a lot smaller now but they were responsible for scraping the rocks off the mountain up above as they move. Those people should not have traveled underneath so late in the day.
Ive seen a lot of debris lying on old ice fields in the mountains, everywhere glaciers retreat, its getting worse. You're right, this becomes worse with temperatures rising during the day. Of course glaciers move rocks, but rockfall increased massively with glaciers retreating. that debris field, where they are traveling, looks horrible, very dangerous
Nino, quite correct, the advancing glacier at some point likely placed the rock on top of it. The glacier now retreating, caused the rock to fall over the edge. Bad time to be under it for sure!
And the rocks which fell down in a fear of Allah.
