Have there been any recent changes to the wiring? That is not a symptom of something that just happens with a bad part, it would be a wiring change or a short of some type. I would start there first.
mmrbeef do you still work on ONAN p218 engine mine was running but needing new flyball governor I got the engine out it has 1300 hours on it what would you charge to rebuild it ?
Hey buddy i have a little dilemma,, i have a 1981 showroom condition 317,, it originally came with the series “1” KT17 then was brought to dealership (JD) and they replaced it with a Series “2” KT17,, when tractor only had about 100 hours on it .. tractor now only has 514 hours on it,, i put a remote oil filter and electronic ignition on it so basically it is a Magnum 18... here is my dilemma ,, if you are standing in front of tractor and looking at front of motor the starter side i dont have the small piece of tin that wraps around the bottom of the cylinder as an air foil to direct air up the face of the cylinder.. the left side does but not the right.. now the original owner (a old fella) said that is the way John Deere installed the engine... so my question is , is it better to not have the air foil on the right side than to have it on ? He was the original owner ,,(it was his baby) he got to old to drive it is why he sold it and hired someone to cut for him...so i am second owner...so no way someone else removed the air foil... so what should i do find one ? And replace it.. or leave it the way John Deere installed it with no foil on right side ? And if you think it has to be on there do you have that piece i can buy from you? Wouldn’t matter if kohler or onan i can screw to the other heat shield piece .. so what do you think ? My brother suggested that maybe deere felt that cylinder cooled better without it ,,, i don’t know ,,, i know your busy don’t mean to ask stupid questions but tractor is my baby also lol.. so i wanna do what is best for it,, and i value your opinion...the motor runs smooth as a kitten like it just rolled off assembly line doesn’t burn a drop of oil between oil changes(50 hrs) Spark plugs look like new just a very faint tan barley visible on plug after 100 hrs of use...and wanna keep it like this so any help or advise would be awesome ,, thanks buddy...
Interesting about he tin. I have not had too many 317's that had the KT17. I did a little checking through some of my service bulletins and I did not see anything about leaving the tin off. But the is not an exhaustive search. I do not have any tins like that either.
I always enjoy seeing you work on the older tractors but I like the ones on the newer stuff to. Keep up the good work.
I am trying to get a better balance between the two groups. Up next is a video with the 4066R
Good diagnosis. Hopefully plugging in trigger wire to solenoid will make it crank.
I can’t start my 318 without the PTO switch bring in the on position. Any thoughts?

Ohhhh man! That was quite the cliffhanger haha
That 318 is so clean. It really looks like it's in nice shape.
Did you test the neutral safety switch??
Yes, I cover all the testing in the next video. There was a good bit more disassembly that was needed.
