  • This was Fissure 8, the largest of 24 fissures that erupted in Kilauea’s Lower East Rift Zone. This week Hawaii County released statistics estimating that 3000 people were affected by the 2018 eruption. 716 structures were destroyed. Access to more than 220 dwellings was blocked by lava. 3,240 land parcels had property tax values adjusted to $0. $4 million (USD) of property tax revenue was lost. 58 Miles of roads were covered by lava (besides three highways cut off). The area of land covered by lava is 13.7 square miles. And 875 acres of new land was formed on the Big Island of Hawaii. #volcano
