Not a troll, but a fun fact: when Chopin wrote his etudes op. 10, he showed them to his friend Franz Liszt, who sight-read every single one of them perfectly (It is said that Liszt never made a mistake, even when sight-reading). Many sources state that Chopin was shocked and disappointed in himself at first, but then decided to dedicate these etudes to Liszt.
He said “I want to rob him of the way he plays my etudes”.
And then he dedicated the op. 25 etudes to Liszt's madam*
There’s no evidence of Liszt sight reading Chopin’s etudes. At least in Alan Walker’s biography.

The reason why Rossini wrote "the cat duet" was:
He used to say the sopranos would sound so horrible while vocalising that even the cats would run away.
So he wrote the piece (full of coloratura and hissing) to try to corroborate or prove his point.
And btw there are many versions where the singer go on stage with cat ears and tails.

I saw it once live at my local conservatory. It was performed by students and the two singer girls dressed up as cats. They genuinely played the cat role so they weren't just standing and singing on stage. I was today years old when I found out that it's a legit famous classical piece and not something composed by a student for fun.
The cat duet already sounds better than the 2019 Cats movie.
They should go on stage with the eletronic cat ears that you can move have twitch with your brainwawes.

Ultimate troll move: Dvorak suspected that the tuba player was having an affair with his wife. So in either the 8th or 9th symphony, he only gave the tuba player EIGHT NOTES ONLY in the entire symphony, all in the second movement. So the tuba player would have to stay until the end.
LOOL, I love Dvořák but this :D he is even better thatn I thought.
The story likely never actually happened (it's more likely because the tuba was a doubling instrument back then), but the 9th symphony does have only 14 notes in the tuba part.
If that's true, it a bad move... I'd do the opposite, make the damn guy to constantly play not stop even a second during the WHOLE symphony... xD

It'd be a constant pain, I want the guy to suffer playing, up and downs non stop for a single second in several hours, it'd be not for show off, what will be a show it's his lungs exploding... As a horn player my favorite troll moment is from Mozart. He wrote horn concertos for a close friend of his, and in the original manuscript of one of the movements from a concerto, he left little notes by the music like “take courage” during hard parts, “you ass”, and “thank heavens thats enough”

I thought Mozart was the biggest troll in classical music, but Haydn is on another level.

I had a music theory instructor in grad school who declared that Haydn was far more brilliant than Mozart. If you think of brilliance as finding innovation within established rules and being amazing nonetheless, I think this instructor was right. (Of course I didn't think so at the time, and as a young man thought far too highly of my own opinion!)
@@DavidBrowningBYD Mozart and Haydn were equally brilliant in very different ways. Haydn innovated the symphony and string quartet, while Mozart's innovations were more in operas and concertos. The main reason most consider Mozart "better" is simply because he wrote more top-tier masterpieces that are among the best in all classical music. Haydn has a few of those, but Haydn's real strength is in his consistent excellence. Like, I don't think any Haydn symphony is better than Mozart's Jupiter, but as a body of work I'd take Haydn's symphonies over Mozart's, and I'd say the same for their string quartets. However, the thing is that Haydn doesn't really compete with Mozart when it comes to operas and concertos, while Mozart is very competitive with Haydn in terms of symphonies and string quartets. I'd also say that Mozart has a lot of other chamber music and choral music that's generally better than Haydn (though Haydn's Creation stands with Mozart's best choral music).
@@jonathanhenderson9422 I would agree with you completely, although as a singer, I would say that Haydn's music is as much a joy to sing as Mozart's. I would not want to choose a favorite between the two!
Mozart also composed a six voice canon called „Leck mich im Arsch“, which translates to lick me in the ass. It was thought to be a party piece for his friends and used the main theme of Haydn‘s 3rd Symphony. The biggest trolls in classical music were collaborating after all.

Mozart literally wrote a song called "Lick My Ass"... and it's considered one of the finest pieces in the classical music genre.

One of the first “troll” pieces i listened to and really enjoyed was shostakovich’s ninth symphony - what was supposed to be an epic symphony comparable to beethoven’s ninth, but turned out to be all light because shosty looked at all that expectation and went “nah”

The symphony was originally intended to celebrate a major Russian military victory over Germany. He declared well in advance his intention to compose a piece reflective of Russia's greatness. He proceeded to change it last-minute in protest of said greatness.

Haydn had a quite down to Earth reason for his Farewell Symphony:
The Orchestra didn't get paid for some reason or other and Haydn composed it as a musical Rebellion and as a warning to show the customer, that the musicians would go away, if they didn't get paid. The musicians left one after the other leaving the Concert Master alone with Haydn in the end.
This is a very good choice for these days. Modern Society not paying for music, not paying for musicians is a scandal in our modern World.

Actually, the prince who employed Haydn had gone on vacation and taken the orchestra with him, but made them stay much longer than they had expected to (I think it was a few weeks instead of a few days). The symphony was basically Haydn's way of begging the prince to let them go home, and it worked; they went home the next day.

Last year my High School orchestra instructors were retiring, and decided that the Farewell Symphony would be the piece the seniors played for the last concert of the year. I actually teared up as I saw each senior leave one by one.

I've always wondered if the end of Sibelius' 5th Symphony was a joke. Hear me out... So his 4th Symphony's last movement is very.. unusual .. in that instead of finishing with a bang, it slowly peters out, and concludes with a chord on the lower end of the strings. When it premiered, the audience were hesitant to clap, as they weren't sure whether it was over, and the symphony was very unsuccessful. And the end of his 5th, after iconic 'swan' bit, has the most endingy endings, a series of setups for the cadence, as staccato chord hits, before finally hitting the tonic. Feels like he was saying 'that clear enough for you!?'

Wow! You know your Sibelius so much better than I do. But I tend to regard Sibelius as penitential listening.
Wasn't the ending of Sibelius' 5th originally a bit different than in the eventual best known version? I think he revised it more than once. Whether it was a "joke", I don't know, but I've heard that Sibelius both read reviews of his works carefully, and was his own worst critic, which is why he would go on revising some of his works over and over, both before and after they premiered.
It reminds me of Erik Satie's "Embryons desseches" where he made fun of the "romantic" and "aggresive" way to end a piece by repeatedly *hammering* down the last chord for 1 damn page

Yeah, but it doesn't... "Musical Joke" is really terrible, musically... I'm always surprised when people say "oh, but it sounds ok"... It doesn't! It's completely wrong in every way, and it just goes to show how many bad ears there are out there.

Performed in a variety show years ago that had several classical numbers in it. Two women performed "Due Gatti" there, and they sang entirely in proper "opera voices", never slipping into "cat voice". The fun was the slow burn as in gradually dawned on the audience, a couple of people at a time, that all the lyrics were, "Meow. Meow. Meow. Meow." That act brought the house down.

Fun fact: Rossini was known for being a true gourmet. One of his most notorious quotes is, in fact: “In order to eat a turkey, we need to be two: me and the turkey.” (Translated from Italian).
Plus one of the several recipes dedicated to him is the “Tournedo alla Rossini”, which is a filet mignon pan-fried in butter, served on a crouton, and topped with a hot slice of briefly pan-fried fresh whole foie gras and then topped with truffle and finished with a Madeira demi-glace sauce.

I remember singing Cat Duet with my classmate back when we're in our last year in college. The whole piece was a bit awkward for me the first time I heard some recordings. Yet, as we go along with the rehearsals, it was actually fun. We had back-up dancers who really dressed as cats. 😊

I've watched the cat duet so many times and cracked up for every one of them. I also showed it to a bunch of other people, and they were all like "is this serious?"
Also, listening to Surprise Symphony makes me a little anxious because I'm always second guessing which time the music actually gets loud and when it stays soft and just continues the melody. I guess Hayden was successful in making something to keep people from falling asleep!
I've seen it, and until this twoset episode, I did not know it was a real piece. I always thought it was a recent parody.

Sometimes when I'm in a compositional rut, I will intentionally try to think of a dumb idea and go all in on it. It's so easy to think that every piece you write has to be a masterwork, that doing something intentionally stupid can be genuinely quite helpful to get out of your own head and just have fun writing music.

I found this in the inter-tubes: "The Cat Duet is often attributed to composer Giaochino [sic] Rossini (1792 - 1868) but he wasn’t the one who composed it, even though the piece does contain a lot of his music. It is likely that the piece was compiled by Robert Lucas Pearsall (1795 - 1856). An 1825 edition of the Cat Duet credited Pearsall for the piece, but he was under a psuedonym: G. Berthold, just to add to the confusion!"

The most troll classical music is by PDQ Bach. I've literally been in tears listening to the music. It's like Weird Al meets classical music.
My parents sang some stuff by him. My favorite was "Throw the Yule Log On, Uncle John," but I absolutely agree everything I've seen from him is fantastically hilarious.
Oh, man, one of my top composers. "Long Live the King" is excellent, and I would love to get people to sing it with me, but it's hard to think of an appropriate occasion. I have the Oedipus Tex CD and love the namesake opera (good length of one, IMO) and Classical Rap.
If you are so inclined, check out Victor Borge, whose specialty was piano-based classical music comedy. Two highlights are his "Happy Birthday" variations and his performance of "Caro Nome" with Marylyn Mulvey.
@@FlamingCockatiel Thanks for sharing your recommendation. Both of those performances were fantastic. I don't think people give enough credit to these musicians because not only are they funny, but they have a next level of talent to not only be funny, but to actually perform at such a high level.
Going back to PDQ Bach, my favorite piece is the 1712 overture. Definitely give it a listen if you haven't heard it before.

In the first movement of his XVth symphony Shosty puts a fragment of Rossini's Wilhelm Tell. It is hilarious, almost squeezed a laugh out of me during the live performance.

Check out all the movements of the Carnival of the Animals by Sains-Saëns, they're all hilarious (except the Aquarium and the Swan which are more serious). Particularly the movement called "Fossils", it's a parody of several very famous pieces, including his own work ! Even the description of the piece is a complete troll: Saint-Saëns called this piece a "zoological fantasy" lmao!

Firstly, great video guys. Here's a few things you missed, or in one case, you got the wrong composer, which is a common mistake.
# Haydn's trumpet concerto. This was composed for the very first keyed trumpet, that could play all the notes in the chromatic scale. So, Haydn started it, on purpose with the Solo trumpet playing in a fanfare style . Then started showing off what this new trumpet can do. These trumpets are still in use to this day, especially in europe today.
# A musical joke. Gentlemen, you didn't mention the cadenza, where mozart wrote the Solo violin, going too high, then out of tune, then dropping to a bottom G to sound like a string breaking on the violin.
The last movement was used as the theme tune to an equestrian show on the BBC, back in the day.
# The Cats duet. Firstly, it wasn't composed by Rossini. It was composed by an English composer, Robert Lucas Pearsall (1795 - 1856), but in the style of Rossini, as a tribute to him. In 1825 Pearsall was given the credit for this piece, in a written piece by a composer G Berthold. Strangely a pseudonym that he also wrote under back in the day.
If you want to hear a great version. Find on you tube the last night of the proms 1996. Where you'll find 2 singers having a cat fight over flower bouquets, and a damehood. Honest guys you'll love it. Trust me.

Another interesting one is Debussy’s Golliwog’s Cakewalk, which has a middle section featuring a more subdued line that’s frequently interrupted by this rather comical allusion to Wagner’s Tristan chord from Tristan und Isolde. Sort a “thumbing his nose” gesture towards Wagner and his German dramaticism

The surprise symphony was actually to get the attention of the audience as a whole since concerts of the day were social events where people would be chatting the whole time (gotta see and be seen so everyone knows who has the cash to dress up and go out) and the music would often be treated as a background

Indeed I am quite astonished to find how little music is attended to in silence; for, though every body seems to admire, hardly any body listens." The "farewell" piece by Haydn reminds me of a middle school piece I watched called "clarinets packing up early". Same motif each time, but as it went on it was faster and faster, and the clarinets would remove parts from the clarinet every time. At the end, they picked up their cases and walked out. Brilliant performance, it will always be in my head. (note- when clarinets remove their barrel too, (piece below the mouthpiece) there's virtually no way to control the sound.)
Mozart's Don Giovanni has a part where musicians are playing a part from his other earlier opera, and the people are commenting on it in scene. I find it hilarious.

A good modern take on this is the Canival of Venus-- a spoof on the famous trumpet Canival of Venice that only the composer (Alan visutti) is able to play! techically a BEAST and the only piece that made me laugh out loud!

Each work with a composer to write a piece for the other to play. Totally going after all the aspects that are furthest from mastery. Or frustrate the hell out of them. Remind of most hated piece. Troll the heck out of each other writing it, but still make it sound like a genuine piece to people who fail to see the personal context.

My friend and I sung the Rossini duet together for her GCSE music performance and it was genuinely fun - I struggle with anxiety and I don't even REMEMBER my own performance, but that one was actually so much fun I enjoyed it which was amazing! Thanks Rossini you brightened up my music education a bit king
Funny thing about the cat duet, I´ve sung it before and it is really fun to play it out on stage and also really fun when the audience understands what you are playing. It is a piece that you can really take to the extreme.
Berlioz composed a « Amen » fugue in « La Damnation de Faust » just for trolling bad church composers. But this fugue is so daaaaaaamn good that it is for me one of the peaks of all the piece

that'd be so good if you guys make a video where one of you will play the first note of the piece and other will try to guess and everytime he can't guess the player adds a note and play again, to see who will recognize the piece with less notes btw really enjoy your vids
The have a pretty old video where they guess a symphony playing JUST the first note you should go watch it! They are really good at guessing too, might not need more than one note.
