    What a great idea, taking a picture of your drawing to practice cross hatching before you ruin the original. Would not have occurred to me to do that.

      Anything that makes it easier to experiment and take risks is a great learning process in drawing I think Gail. 😀

    Thank you.

      That reminds me when I was in Art School I learned more from other fellow artist that the program itself. It was a great program and amazing teachers but what you get out of watching other artist and sharing the techniques we used, etc, was priceless. Same deal here.👍

      Thanks Andrés. Yes, quite dramatic I thought. I had four angles to choose from. 😀

    Line direction is crucial (now you’ve explained it) I often do / did it one direction for most parts of the subject, BUT NOT ANY MORE! THANK YOU Steve.

      Great to hear. Buildings are more my comfort zone, but it’s important to stretch ourselves and I do liked these imperial eagles they were a great subject for me to use. Have fun with them. I really hope you cross hatch it. 😀

    I have always loved the classic illustrations of the 18th and 19th century. Think Winnie the Pooh original illustrations and Hans Christian Andersen books. I love the details drawn with just a pen, but I never knew what the technique was called. Since discovering your channel I can't help but take my pen and draw alongside your videos. Thank you so much!! Much love!

    Basically, follow the contours of the object.
    I think, however, I'd have gone with a smaller nib on the eagle's head, neck, and wing crests to get an even lighter tone than the 02 and have sharper contrast to the more heavily shadowed areas of the monument.

    Thank for this instructive lesson regarding the direction of hatching. would in be possible to demonstrate this in a portrait? I struggle with long lines or short lines, crosshatching only in the dark? or in light planes too? value to siggest the form or linework following the form? Sorry for suggesting so much "work"! Best wishes Gerd

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  Рік тому

      Gerd, I’m not sure I have enough experience in portraiture to make a worthwhile lesson. There are no rules for hatching. It’s whatever you think enhances your work. Experiment with hatch lines for form rather than value. I’ve seen it done very effectively. We have to stop being afraid of ruining our drawings and instead play around experimenting to get the information we need. Have fun with it. 😀

    What pens do you use?

    • @stephentraversart
      @stephentraversart  Рік тому

      I use Copic Multiliners for the line work, and Copic Sketchmarkers for the tone, using the brush end, not the chisel end. I use Neutral Grey colour for the tone, usually 4-6 tones each drawing. The markers are refillable and the pens can have their ink cartridges and nibs replaced. 😀
