SHOW NOTES
Greetings Heathens! Today’s episode of Talk Heathen is brought to you by, keep wearing your masks in public, stop being selfish and wear it! You could save a loved one. Our hosts today are the dynamic duo, Eric Murphy and Vi La Bianca.
Let’s get to calls. The “first” caller is a returning caller, Father John from Canada. He wants to talk about some loopholes in the Roman Catholic doctrine surrounding the sacrament of confirmation and that Roman Catholic theology was inaccurate and Eastern Orthodox is the One True Church, um ok. The No True Scotsman fallacy and circular arguments abound!
Next up, Brad from Virginia would like to talk about how his friend has very opposing views about LGBTQ marriage/legal rights and uses whataboutism to push a dialogue and agenda. He wonders how society makes these opinions and what to do about it.
Arthur in Poland would like to hear some recommendations on how to navigate relationships with his children and family about his atheism, deconversion. He wonders how to object to baptism in a faith. Don’t wait on it Arthur, we definitely recommend possibly speaking to a secular therapist/marriage counselor about your concerns.
Evan in Ohio is calling in as a deist and a recovering Baptist. He is calling in about his sister, who is struggling with her religion and self hate in regards to LGBTQ rights. It almost sounds like she may be projecting. Evan, you can’t push her along her journey, she must come to the conclusions herself. Be there for her, listen to her, and be available to her.
Next in the queue is Tom from Missouri. He wants to talk about the historical evidence of Jesus’ resurrection. This is a great call, definitely give it a listen, there are a lot of pearls of wisdom that I didn’t capture.
Billy in North Carolina would like to talk about how atheists need to figure out how to come together, mobilize, and become activists to highlight oppression against the non-religious. We must remain intersectional and accepting of others while doing this work.
That’s our show today folks, thanks all! Be safe and healthy out there!

WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Why I stopped worshipping fairies and started worshipping elves.
you can believe in them but don't worship them, odin won't be too happy 'bout it...
Why? You simply experienced evidence!
@N RJ Fuck off.
@N RJ Maybe Flip Wright will give you an explanation if you:
1) Correct your English spelling and grammar (I know, this is a cheap trick meant to discredit the argument, while not offering anything substantial to refute the statement itself; but I'm using this trick anyway!)
2) Prove, by providing independent, necessary and sufficient evidence, that a god indeed exists; that this god did create where Flip lives; and that this god is worthy of respect.
Also, if you respond to me, please start with 2).
As an aside, I would consider having disbelief a virtue.
Of course, Elves are thicker and more wholesome. Plus, with their extended lifespans they stay in their prime MUCH longer than us humans.
"Properly instructed", the Catechism is a book of questions, with one answer for each question. Most answers were, "god did it". At eight years old, I asked why I couldn't ask my own questions? That was met with a loud no, and a slap in the face. I became an atheist at ten years old. Still one at 74 years old. Fear keeps people in their religion. Not a good way to have a happy life.
Very similar for me. I remember have to learn those answers and getting one whack on the knuckles with the edge of a ruler for the wrong answer.
If swiss cheese had as many holes as canon law, it would have to be sold as a fragrance, not a food.
LOL!
Fellow Canadian here. Sorry for John's tap-dancin'. Why he can't tell you his real reason is beyond me, coz *everybody* up here knows. He won't shut up about it, sure. Last time I ran into him when I was on a double-double run to Timmy's, he told me [like he does *every damn time]* he joined up for the hats. He really likes their hats.
Bill McDonald you’re quite right. He’s tap dancing.
This man has no independent thoughts but likes to hear himself talk.
@Almighty Jesus You may be a prime reason why people keep away from religion; like seeing a meth addict going through the contents of a dumpster; you register them and consider yourself fortunate...
John: We believe we are the one true faith
Vi: Why do you believe that?
John: *head explodes*
That massive dodge speaks to intellectual dishonesty: "Everyone needs to figure that out for themselves". Yes, we agree that everyone needs to figure out how to distinguish truth from falsehood, but I can't then turn around and assert something as true and throw my hands in the air
Great job Vi nailing down this father’s bullshit! How do you confirm your experience maps to reality?
Maybe I missed the point but something just hung on me. John is confusing "experience" with "learning." You learned about your cancer treatment options from your doctor. But you didn't experience the treatments until you went through them. You didn't experience cannabis treatment when you told about it, you experienced it when you actually took it. Now you will learn when you have the experience, but you don't have the experience when you learn you might have one. Now what you experience and how to frame and understand that is something else. The terms are very similar in may respects but they don't mean the same thing. While I understand everyone's got their own definitions but the constant restructuring of those definitions by believers always troubles me.
As a former priest, now atheist, I'd love to chat with this guy!
"One of us is wrong..."
There is a falacy hidden: both might be wrong.
Two men say they're jeebus...
@@NeverTalkToCops1 There is only one Jesus!
His name is Brian. 😁
@@NeverTalkToCops1 save me jeebus;)
Thanks for the great content!
It is quite apparent that he not only doesn't care what is true and false, but is scared of the truth.
Will the circle be unbroken? Not when Father John is talking...
I’m Orthodox and quite enjoyed this. I just came across your channel. You should have more orthodox on in the future. It’s is a more nuanced, particular form of Christianity. Often overlooked. Good luck on the channel! I’ll be subscribing
He wasted half an hour to finally come to the conclusion, that he believes, because he believes. Fuck that royally - There's such a veiled dishonesty here.
John traded being led by one guy who dresses like a wizard for another.
no, he traded being led by one guy who dresses like a wizard for leading others while dressed like a wizard
Carlos Sánchez I think he only gets to cosplay like a druid. You got to have rank to get the Dumbledore outfit 😂
Seems like this guy is more concerned with finding the "correct" version of Christianity rather than questioning if Christianity is true.
He has to stay on the job...
Why do you keep calling him, FATHER? That is a religious title used to give authority.
Almighty Jesus Actually my father is Terry, and although he is the best father a son could ask for, I don’t think he would consider himself almighty.
@Almighty Jesus He owes A LOT of child support because he was never around when I grew up.
shoulda called him daddy! lol!
Almighty Jesus Shhhh! My father would have punched the nose of anyone who claimed to be the father of his children. Of course, with an average of 273 babies born every minute in the world, and usually several sexual activities to get a woman pregnant, then this Jesus guy must indeed be almighty to keep up with that many impregnations in order to be the only father there is. Of course, we also now need to figure out how, if there is only one father, the genetics of those 273 babies suggest around 270+ father’s are involved. That is a lot of father’s angry because some Lothario named Jesus has been slipping a quick one to their wive’s and girlfriends when they are not home.
Should call him daddy 😂
She's a much better host already.
12:00 around this mark, Vi states that she views theology as a subset of philosophy. I tend to agree, but I go a bit further. i view theology as a bastardization of philosophy, because in theology certain foundational statements (including dogma, axioms) are not necessarily fully closed off to inquiry and questioning, but if one inquires and questions, the answers are already predetermined.
Add to that the fact that while philosophy may deal with theology, it takes science to deal with the CLAIMS of religion. If all religion did was discuss human behavior and principles, it could remain in philosophy, but the minute it makes claims about factual events, it is time for a different discipline to take over, and it becomes fair game for science.
20 min too long.
Don't have him call back.
Oh hold up now I just got to the part where you guys are saying the Christians didn’t exist before the New Testament and now I’m chortling😂😂
A circle is a circle is a circle is a circle is a circle is a circle is a circle is a circle is a circle ......
Am i wrong or did he really claim canabis cures cancer?
No he didn't (if you're just making a joke I missed cool, I apologize). He is saying that pot helps with the side effects of chemo better than some of the "accepted" treatments, and I can attest that it does.
That was the most awkward segue into a conversation about weed I have ever heard.
So first John gives a lot of half-answers and deflects questions and then he complains about the amount of questions...
Unless you were a test subject yourself, you don’t experience a experiment. The guy is smurfing experience to fit his narrative. And even then the things don’t add up
@Almighty Jesus
Food... and water... are chemicals.
@Almighty Jesus
They are chemicals no matter what nonsense you try to say.
Also, still not gay. Quit trying to get into my pants, man. Learn to take a no.
Almighty Jesus Why do you lot have such an obsession with where people stick their genitals? Anything you wanna tell the thread?
@ Almighty Jesus: AJ, it’s OK to come out now. Aren’t you tired of pretending to be someone you’re not? You don’t need to project on others anymore
@Almighty Jesus excellent idea. By your definition, the internet isn't part of nature, so get of the internet.
The ecclesiastical conundrum.
Why the fuck don't scientists use this guy's method? "Everybody just has to figure it out themselves." Flawless.
Hmmmm, a Canadian Catholic that isn't CC and wasn't an "inner circle atheist".
Why I stopped worshiping Jesus and began worshiping Christ.
@John Wood I thought so as well, at first. But then I thought, no, that's a great troll.
@Almighty Jesus
Blasphemous fool, only God himself is Almighty. See you in hell.
Almighty Jesus Thank you for coming online and clearly stating that your god is a douche.
Wha...?
@@Diviance Nice loving deity with a massive inferiority complex you got there. Would be a shame if something heretical happened to him.
I think Eric was having an off day. That was more argumentative than usual, and not in a great way. Some good points, sure, but we also get "So I learned this in a class" and then in the same breath "What makes you sure of that? Just that you learned it in a class?" Maybe I missed a bit, but that sounded very much like a double standard. Considering how the other call involving John went, I'm wondering if he doesn't get on Erics nerves more than average.
To be fair, John was doing a whole lot of what seemed like dodging, yes. But more than once he was trying to answer a question, was detailed from answering it, was then told to answer it again, and was then interrupted while trying to answer it again. Whether we like what he was trying to say or not, he was trying to communicate.
I'm going with the off-day theory myself. Eric looks a bit run down in this clip and the one immediately before. Here's hoping the next call goes better and we can get communication going both ways.
He didn't answer one question he dodged so much it was crazy
Can't even make a religion match up with itself
My experience with theists are that they are delusional.
So, he’s a Christian supremacist. Is he also a white supremacist?
I love father John. Would love for him to come back home.
How dismissive he is about any other theology-- lowest, blah blah blah. Honey, until you can put your god in front of us, it's all just intellectual exercise.
One correction: it's intellectual LAZINESS, not exercise
Just say "faith" father john and stop wasting my time jeez!
Is there any way you can make Vi less awesome? Do me a favor 'cause I'm pretty sure a homely old man is ever going to cut it!
F***ing Fred Astaire over here. Avoiding the conclusion that he really has no good reason to believe what he believes.
This guy was BORING!
“I don’t know why I believe”
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
