MacKay’s "My Final Resting Place" for Piano Trio by Chia-Chu Ho
Letting his creativity unleash was Ho Chia-Chu’s goal for himself when he arranged My Final Resting Place for piano trio.
Canadian missionary Dr. George Mackay was among the first missionaries to arrive in Taiwan. He dedicated his lifelong career to missionary ministry, health care and education in Taiwan. In the process, he was among the forces that helped modernize the then insular Taiwanese society. Having arrived in Taiwan before the Japanese rule in 1871, he gained a keen understanding of Taiwanese customs and way of life. On the eve of his passing, Mackay wrote the poem, My Final Resting Place in which he fully revealed his loving affection for Taiwan and its people:
How dear is Formosa to my heart!
On that island the best of my years have been spent.
How dear is Formosa to my heart!
A lifetime of joy is centered here.
I love to look up to its lofty peaks,
Down into its yawning chasms, and away out on its surging seas.
How willing I am to gaze upon these forever!
My heart's ties to Taiwan cannot be severed!
To that island I devote my life.
My heart's ties to Taiwan cannot be severed!
    There I find my joy.
I should like to find a final resting place within the sound of its surf and under the shade of its waving bamboo.
The Final Resting Place has been turned into music many times in the past due to its popularity. Born in 1978, Ho was among those who were inspired by Mackay’s spirit. In 2007, Ho was commissioned by the Chiang Wei-Shui Cultural Foundation to compose The Final Resting Place. The poem and the music, though separated by more than a century, still reflect each other in their expression of love for Taiwan. Articulating Mackay’s affection for Taiwan, the melody of The Final Resting Place contains not only soothing gentleness but also delivers an awe-inspiring impact.
