  • Do games actually need blockchain, web3, and NFTs? Or is this all a scam to raise money?
In this video I will evaluate some of the pros, cons, and misconceptions around Crypto in gaming. As well as address some of the areas I feel are good and bad use cases.

@@Web3Wesley i am thinking on the lines of EV vs Fuel Car. Disregarding the environmental argument, once EV will be cheaper than fuel car, everyone will use them out of financial reasons. the same for Gaming. Once you can build a game cheaper with blockchain than without, it will be a given. But is that going to happen? Does Blochckain really offer some benefits in production/cost? Lets say you build a new Escape from Tarkov. Is blockchain really necessary to feel the rush of losing items? Or is it working fine/better without?
In Short: What in detail are benefits in deveolopment that web 3 offers?

i really like your nuanced takes and though i hate my games to have anything to do with the blockchain, the technology itself is very interesting for me as someone who works in the software engineering field outside of video games
you said that studios can't shut down fully on-chain games, but i'm curious how a studio might be be able to do that without relying on some peer-to-peer shenanigans in the backend, which is needless to say, something (i imagine) you don't want as the developers of the game, it's hard to implement and nearly impossible to control since you're at the mercy of the P2P consensus

I appreciate that. I love blockchain tech too and I love video games, seeing them meet is cool, but it has to make sense haha.
Yeah in that section I wanted to clarify a bit more, but the game lasting forever definitely relies on the blockchain it is developed on to last. Its simply that the devs can walk away and the sever doesn't go down for example. But if you have some time check out Proof of Play. Their CEO has talked about this concept a few times on social media etc with more detail

A lot of great points were raised. Though I think the negative connotation of gamers towards crypto is caused by game devs pushing for play-to-earn models. This has to change.

That is true. I think the main stream media is a big part. Blogs like kontaku butcher NFTs haha

Totally agree. Game devs hate blockchains. They dont really feel the need to do so.

Nah. Gamers hate blockchains. The money is too big for game devs to pass on. We've seen enough of that haven't we?

An NFT is a number in a program. If it points to an image, etc. on IPFS, the image, etc. can be decentralized

    • @Web3Wesley
      @Web3Wesley  11 місяців тому

True, but I have talked to 99% of games in the space. They are not doing that haha
You can make everything on chain, but for many reasons most games are not

i play mmorpg since 2008 and i can say we sometimes trade real life money for an item but its not supported by game dev, so if u got scam u cannot file a complain againts that player. i say nft is the way to avoid being scam because the transaction is supported by the dev

I think NFTs are one good solution, but maybe its not the best solution. That is always hard to tell haha, but people are being scammed so something can definitely be improved

The tech is cool ngl. I like your approach. But I work with dozens of AAA game projects from West to East and I realized: The last thing they want to do is making good games.
Why? Because it takes time, effort, resources, expenses to actually do it.
Why web3 game studios go for web3? Simply opposite of the above: Quick to enter the market, less effort (using template games fron Unreal Engine or old arcade games), faster capital income due to hype, and easier to rug pull. That's about it.
THERE ARE NO SUCH THING AS WEB3 GAMES.
And another thing for sure, gamers don't want ownership or decentralization or interoperability as much as they think.
CS2 has items carried over from CSGO, that's interoperability.
Valorant accounts have resellability. That's ownership.
Neither of the games needs web3.
Web3 are 100% ponzi game and nothing but a speculator tool to manipulate people to take others' money easily and legally (since they are not regulated).
