    From the way you talk about Isekia it seems like the only isekia you've experienced is the generic power fantasy kind where the whole world revolves around the MC. Like the harem assumption thing. The author for Re:zero actually hates harems because they are emotionally insincere and he wants to write emotionally intense relationships that reflect real struggles.
    You can actually see this in the 4th opening when it's shows the reflections of characters in their eyes. Because Re:zero revolves around death and love there's a big emphasis on speaking your love and having it reach the person you care about before you lose the chance. It's a strong message about the importance of letting the people you love know that you love them. Because being blind to the love others have for you is both a tragedy and also a constant problem for people who don't love themselves. That's what Re:zero is really about.
    In the 4th opening you see different variations of the reflection the characters in their eyes. Some are full color, some are just silhouettes. The difference is a symbolism in longing of wanting to express that love but failing to reach them. When It's a silhouette that means their love hasn't reached them because either they haven't voiced it yet or because it was rejected. Now to be perfectly clear, not every instance of 'love' depicted here is romantic love. Platonic love is just as important and the most prevalent form of love in Re:Zero just as it is in life.
    This is why Re:zero is a the real kind of real. It requires maturity when dealing with it. While other Isekia treat the concept of being summoned to a new world as a fun experience where everything goes in their favor, Re:zero treats the situation for what it would actually be like to find yourself stranded in a foreign, possibly hostile land, ignorant of their rules and customs, with no connections to anyone or anything for support.
    There's a real world equivalent of that and it's called forced migration. It's not a good time or even remotely pleasant experience. Re:zero treats the situation as genuinely deadly as it really would be to be completely ignorant of how the world around you works. That's why this emphasis on love in the story works so well. It shows the importance of creating a social network of support structures to help you. Which can only be done with genuine relationships that are not one-sided affairs or transactional. And as re:zero shows, those genuine relationships are hard to create and maintain.
    If you are to watch re:zero, watch it with the intention of it being food for the soul. Not purely entertainment.

    Re:zero is a very unique kind of story, it's actually recommended to come back to it a second or even third time. It's most definitely the type of anime that's better on rewatch than first watch. This is because it's layered with expertly hidden hints and foreshadowing that's nearly impossible to catch the first time, but on a rewatch when you are privy to the characters secrets and agenda's you can notice oddities in their behaviors. Observing the character is like playing poker against them, you have to learn their tells. They really did an amazing job in the production of this anime for this reason, even the tone of the voice actors play a major part in revealing their intentions. It's because of this aspect of Re:zero being better on rewatch that it doesn't suit everyone's tastes, for some people rewatching just isn't something they would do unless it's one of their absolute favorite shows. But Re:zero kind of needs that rewatch to become a top favorite in most cases.
    Other than the advice that's it's better on rewatch, the other bit of advice i would give if you are considering watching Re:zero is that it's very important that you don't project onto the main character. He isn't meant to be a self-insert. Like how most Isekai characters have no past revealed about themselves so it's easier to self-insert. This is not that. Re:zero's main character Subaru does have a past, it's being hidden from you purposely. As a character he must be treated as his own person that you have to get to know over time. Subaru is not written like a protagonist meant to please the audience, but instead like a real person.
    And as we all know as fellow real people, sometimes people suck. But getting to know a person is about looking past their flaws and seeing their qualities as a individual. It's this reason, this challenge to the audience, that puts re:zero as a top 5 anime for so many people.
    As i'm writing this i'm realizing something. Most isekia protagonists are like dogs. Most everyone loves dogs. Dogs were literally made to be as pleasing to us as possible. Subaru is more like a Cockatoo. As a pet, a stranger looking in would look at this loud screeching house goblin and wonder why anyone would want to keep that thing around. But for the birds owner that considers it family, they love that little house goblin with all their hearts. I'm also realizing the parallel I'm making here gets really dark as Cockatoo's are one of the few kinds of animals, like humans, that self-harm when depressed. Oof.

    2:50 So the stakes... The stakes are extremely high because of two reasons, (A) He can't control the save point he returns to, and since it's triggered by death there's no guarantee he'll ever be back to life again. The Save Point can trigger after he failed to save someone which makes that friend's death set in stone. (B) Death is painful, you can never get used to the pain, and the ways Subaru die in this show are always brutal.
    The stakes are extremely High!

      @Lugen101 Рік тому +5

      And probably most substantially, he forms really strong bonds with characters and when a reset happens, they don't remember those bonds which is also very painful since people you care for now look at you like a stranger.

      dont forget he remembers dying, the feeling, the pain, the anxiety and hopelessness all of it, all without anyone else he loves around him remembering his sacrifices or feelings in his final moments. People suffer life long PTSD from just watching someone else die, imagine watching multiple loved ones die, over and over, while also dying and feeling your own death, over and over. Anyones mental would break.

    • @LightVelox
      @LightVelox Рік тому

      Sorry, but as a long time rezero fan, the stakes are pretty much non existent, it's pretty much impossible for Subaru to ever lose anyone for real, the ONLY time Subaru supposedly lost some friends he had just made Satella just came and made him go back in time BEFORE his save point, that pretty much killed all the hype for me tbh

      @ahmadmanga Рік тому

      @LightVelox Рік тому +1

      @@ahmadmanga I won't give much context to not spoil, but technically it's not "before the save point" it's more like Subaru for some reason was not going to the correct save point at the time, but it doesn't change the fact that the author simply faked a bunch of people's deaths just to make some fake emotional drama.
      And those were all pretty much side characters so it's not like their deaths would affect the story that much to begin with, which is why i said no one will die, if he's not willing to kill side characters, you can be pretty much nothing will ever happen to the important ones

    Oh brother. Didn't think about you'd experience and remember every time you died. You could be tortured to death in one life, beaten brutally by a stick in another, get your guts cut open in the next.
    The stakes are still death, because even though he'll return, he'll still have to feel the pain of death and he WILL remember that pain in every single life

  • @flarefox3118
    @flarefox3118 Рік тому +7

    I suppose the real stake with regards to him dying and resetting to a certain point is his sanity. • @Emanon616
    @Emanon616 Рік тому +8

    The stakes in Re:Zero are different from most. In most media, the stakes are about life and death, but in Re:Zero, the stakes have to do with the mind. Main character basically has to try and push through tragedy while still keeping his sanity. He also has a lot of mental problems from his previous life that he has to overcome, such as his hatred for himself and his inability to accept the concept that anybody cares about him.

  • @nathanjarrett728
    @nathanjarrett728 Рік тому +26

    You forget that he still feels the pain and fear of each death and it effects his mental state, those are some of the stakes. Also return by death can't solve everything as it only accounts for his life, it sends him back to the earliest point in which he can avoid his own death, but if he loses someone and he resets to a point after that death has already happened, then that character's fate is permanent. That's how it can still have stakes

    • @haseothepkker

    (The only good harem I’ve ever watched/read was probably Mushoku Tensei, but there is only 3 love interests for the mc, and during the plot there was enough time for him with each girl to build their relationships and explain all their feelings for each other. In my opinion some of the best isekai anime are Overlord, Re:Zero, Mushoku Tensei, Konosuba and Drifters. Now obviously theres a bunch more that are incredible but for the sake of keeping my suggestions short, these are some of my favorites.
    Overlord and Re:zero both have a dark fantasy tone, which i'm sure you know. You mentioned that there was no stakes for the main character in Re:zero, but I think the stakes are mostly in whether or not he can save other people and whether or not he has an infinite amount of lives.
    Mushoku Tensei, my favorite of this list, though some people can't get past certain things. If you do watch it, go in with an open mind. It's slow but it is known as "the father of isekai" and it's incredible even if you dislike the beginning episodes.
    Konosuba is one of the best comedy isekai, with serious tones on rare occasion, but generally lighthearted comedy.
    Drifters is one of the ones I wish had continued, as its very different from all of these and badass. Unfortunately they stopped producing it for whatever reason and now we only have a single season.
    To sneak in one more mention Tower of God is fantastic. Season 1 is like a prelude to the series and it does it's job fantastically.
