My friend has a Surface 2 and I actually love the fact that it has a desktop. It makes me feel like it's actually a laptop rather than a typical expensive toy with a bunch of apps. This feature is actually what's persuading me to purchase it instead of the mac-book pro for college.I'm still debating it but so far I am in love with my friend's Surface 2.
My daughter told me she wanted a tablet for school, maybe something with a keyboard... So I found the Widows Surface 2... Laptops are not practical anymore. She needed something to do her homework on, to write, compose, send documents. I bought her this because it isn't just a toy, it's a functional tool. It has all the things she needs to succeed. Every kid with an overpaid parent has an iPad. I want my daughter to succeed at life, not play flappy birds.
Comes in real handy for school to take notes on and carry less things like notebooks and heavy laptop. This is real convenient for any student. Also great to entertain the kids.
I fell in love with the touch keyboard when it first came out because of its uniqueness and now that it's back-illuminated, i think i'm falling in love again. :'D
One important change for me was the fact that you can save media on the SD card now, like music, photos, and video. I'm typing on the new keyboard with the Surface Pro. It's a premium device for sure. My wife has the RT but I am debating whether to get the Surface 2. Thanks for the review.
@Anball2 How is RT a waste og money any more than iOS or Android on a tablet? They are the same type of product and RT has productivity features that neither of the competition can match. It's a tablet, not a pc. Please regard it as such.
I have a Surface 2. It's a piece of fucking shit. They fucking broke everything and they don't even sell RT devices anymore. I'm so mad. I can't even get the fucking Xbox Video app to refresh the goddamn video library because these stupid fuckers ruining Microsoft have no fucking idea how to run a company except into the fucking ground. I brought out my Surface 2 after a year or more of not using it and I remembered why. For the second time in 3 weeks I've had to refresh the fucking system because the piece of shit is slow, hangs, doesn't let me install A FUCKING FACTORY APP (Video) from the app store because it's not found. Fuck this piece of shit.
You can switch to a regular on screen keyboard in settings. It adds numbers etc that does not need to be held down. But it renders of course they keys smaller.
I ended up buying the Surface 2, I wish I could have seen the Pro 2 Review but this review convinced me that the surface 2 is a great device for a student. Casual use + office + 10% discount (if you have or know someone in college with an ID, ask em to send you a pic of it) = happy camper.

Great review. I wouldn't mind having a Surface 2. A really good review, not biased at all. There was some confusion with Surface RT, but most reviewers only made it worse by complaining rather than trying to explain it to people. More reviewers should suggest it as a good tablet device, a good alternative to iPad or Android. Too many complain you can't do what you can with pro. They should instead let people know this is for the MAJORITY of users who just want a tablet but with some extras.
The Sony Tab that you mentioned is a great competitor but I think it is important to note that the reason they added more angles for the kickstand is so that you can put it in your lap. The Sony can be placed at all angles but you can't put it in your lap.
I run my own business (we build websites), and the primary reason I don't change OS away from Windows is MS Office - specifically Word and Excel, which I need for my business documents (Google Docs and Open Office aren't sufficient). To be honest, the fact that the Surface has pretty excellent hardware and the 'full' MS Office means I'd buy this over almost any other tablet. I guess that's a bravo for Microsoft.
My friend just bought one, for a black Friday deal. Man it is really nice, and what is awesome is that you can stream nba games or fights on it. Really cool.
Awesome review as always but two important things left out. #1 OneNote is part of the Office suite. Super powerful. I use it everyday. #2 I don't know why your review unit came with the old pose adapter, but the power adapter on Surface 2 now has light strip around the connector allowing one to visually see that it is charging from any angle. (See Paul Thurrott's Review) Great Job!
One other item of note is that when you use the on screen keyboard, yes the press and hold for numbers can be annoying. However, you can just swipe up from a key and the number will type. I think that is new with 8.1
This same hardware with Bay Trail woulda been really cool. Could been same dimensions/batterylife and cost. Bay Trail benchmarks are looking awesome too. I guess RT does have it's place for people who want a sturdy straightforward somewhat ad/virusware proof windows alternative to the ipad.

It's lighter, faster, well laid out... oh but I don't have MS office. LoL . I use a friggin computer with a decent screen for that.
Love the form factor, really dislike the lack of useful apps - zero procreate/sketchbook pro type apps, no decent photo editing apps, simply not enough content apart from word processing ability.

You can use the web browser to download media files but you can only install apps from the Windows Store. VLC is a desktop app that isn't compatible with Windows RT.
Awesome review! One minor hardware addition you forgot to mention is the LED Flash besides the rear camera. Really wish it had an intel atom processor OR Windows RT was made open to running 3rd party desktop programs. Without that, still can't recommend it to anyone over an intel Atom tablet, which offers a lot more for the same price.

Lisa, thank you for making this great review. I have English as a second language so I must say, your English was easy to hear and understand. I have the first gen. Surface. Works often good, but I think the RAM is to little because it crash when I push.
Got my Surface 2 last week and so far it's been great! Love it. My only complaint will be Internet Explorer, it's a great browser but, but it cam be much better. Usually once of twice a day it tells me it can't load pages, that I'm not connected to the internet which I am.
You can put more things on the desktop, just as you would on a normal PC, although because Surface 2 runs Windows 8.1 RT, you cannot use other regular PC programs like steam/photoshop/chrome/etc... just office, other programs pre-installed on it (notepad/paint/etc) and apps that you can download from the Windows App Store
I have the first surface and 8.1 has transformed it! I got Outlook free! I would suggest buying a Surface RT (First one) for $350 and the new touch cover together and save alot of money

I got the Sony xperia tablet Z, but for productivity the surface 2 with typekeyboard is the best tablet on the market period... There are really no serious competion. When it comes to media consumtion I do prefere android though. My next upgradr will be when you can get a light tablet running dual OS (with Windows 8.1).

I am a graphic designer who would use this on the go when not using my laptop, do you think this would be better for me or the PRO that allows me to install exe. files? I did watch the video review but still unsure… its almost a £400 increase in price for the pro.
The thing that sells the surface 2 over any other baytrail tablet to me is the inclusion of office, the 1080p screen, USB 3.0 and the 2 years of free 200 Gb Skydrive storage
The Surface 2 is a great device, The Tegra4 cpu in this thing and the HD display makes a huge difference from the Original Surface. The Surface is not for everyone, if you need full Office with Outlook email this is your device, if you want a kid friendly happy device with millions of accessories and games and cases, get an iPad or Android tablet. The Surface basically draws the line between half work, half play on a full size tablet. And they are starting to get more of the A-list apps in the Windows apps store, which is great. Plugging in your USB devices is super convenient when you need it. Not having to fumble around for a USB adaptor dongle add-on that you hope you didnt break because you pushed on it to hard is infuriating.
for me it was suprising. did not get all buttons first but it works "logically". Like copy is Ctrl+V even whitout keyboard. sweeping screen to end program was also weird. I love how recarger is like magnetic! This machine did go to error over 10 times when we did did test it. there is "win 7" like all win 8.1 but it makes this machine to do extra work easely. Screen is clear and have really good outdoor usage. It also did make ok work at -20C coldness.
And! If you have 2 microsoft machine they cannot really use at once. 1 account/mchine. so If you have xbox and surface 2. They havent been albe to be same time logged in.
Ville Niskanen Totally false, I have the Microsoft surface 2, Dell Venue 8 pro, my Dell laptop and a desktop, all logged on the same account, and everything is working as expected.
Still have this broblem. Can not use microsoft account same time whit any microsoft product. Have so far tested at win 7 (desktop), win 8.1 (laptop), surface 2, windows phone and xbox 360. None can use it if other have it on.
Good Review. Still trying to decide. I won a Suface from SharePoint-Community and paid to upgrade to Surface II. Then I bought the Type-Touchpad--which is really necessary for productivity. Also a Mobile hotspot. So I invested a little into this.
Hmmm good review but the new split screen functionality is relevant only in metro mode. In desktop mode you can split the screen anyway you see fit due to the way the desktop functions.

@ArmanJakupovic when u say not optimized for touch what do you mean? I use it daily and never had a problem touching anything or navigating. Even right mouse clicks are optimized for touch because u can glide up and down the popup and high light what u want to select before confirming.

I think you could have a good time with the surface. With office and an awesome version of Internet Explorer that runs flash, so it will run pretty much every website that your desktop gets. With those two you can research and take notes at the same time. Its really fantastic.

That depends on the USB modem. Drivers are a bit more limited compared to printer, mouse, mass storage and keyboard USB drivers.
These tablet makers overprice their SSDs so much. A $100 price increase for 32GB? SSDs have not been that pricey $ per GB for years now.
Luckily getting a baseline model you can get a MicroSD card if you so please

We just got the Asus T100 in for review! Yay! So far Bay Trail isn't as fast as I'd hoped. We'll do a smackdown between the Asus T100 and Surface 2.

You can't install Steam on this. You'll need Surface Pro 2 for that (or a PC of some sort).
Nobody cares about Instagram on a tablet. Stuff like UA-cam and Spotify are way more important.

You could use IE, although because this is a 1080p tablet, trying to navigate youtube in browser is extremely difficult
So on this model (just the Surface 2) i cant run and play games like Minecraft and World of Tanks but on the Surface Pro 2 I can? I know this is more of a work use tablet but it is a nice feature to play games and be able to run .exe files. Please Respond. Thanks
Think of the surface as just a tablet and the surface pro as a laptop.
I am a graphic designer who would use this on the go when not using my laptop, do you think this would be better for me or the PRO that allows me to install exe. files? I did watch the video review but still unsure… its almost a £400 increase in price for the pro.
The thing that sells the surface 2 over any other baytrail tablet to me is the inclusion of office, the 1080p screen, USB 3.0 and the 2 years of free 200 Gb Skydrive storage

The Surface 2 is a great device, The Tegra4 cpu in this thing and the HD display makes a huge difference from the Original Surface.
The Surface is not for everyone, if you need full Office with Outlook email this is your device, if you want a kid friendly happy device with millions of accessories and games and cases, get an iPad or Android tablet. The Surface basically draws the line between half work, half play on a full size tablet. And they are starting to get more of the A-list apps in the Windows apps store, which is great.
Plugging in your USB devices is super convenient when you need it. Not having to fumble around for a USB adaptor dongle add-on that you hope you didnt break because you pushed on it to hard is infuriating.

This would be my first tablet to own come Christmas. My major question is tht will it overheat like most laptop do?
for me it was suprising. did not get all buttons first but it works "logically". Like copy is Ctrl+V even whitout keyboard. sweeping screen to end program was also weird. I love how recarger is like magnetic! This machine did go to error over 10 times when we did did test it. there is "win 7" like all win 8.1 but it makes this machine to do extra work easely. Screen is clear and have really good outdoor usage. It also did make ok work at -20C coldness.
And! If you have 2 microsoft machine they cannot really use at once. 1 account/mchine. so If you have xbox and surface 2. They havent been albe to be same time logged in.
Ville Niskanen Totally false, I have the Microsoft surface 2, Dell Venue 8 pro, my Dell laptop and a desktop, all logged on the same account, and everything is working as expected.

Still have this broblem. Can not use microsoft account same time whit any microsoft product. Have so far tested at win 7 (desktop), win 8.1 (laptop), surface 2, windows phone and xbox 360. None can use it if other have it on.
you must be doing something wrong because I use 1 account across all my Microsoft devices, tablet, desktop, and phone. And all are on at the same time
on the keyboard can you lay your fingers on the keyboard with out it responding to your touch
Good Review. Still trying to decide. I won a Suface from SharePoint-Community and paid to upgrade to Surface II. Then I bought the Type-Touchpad--which is really necessary for productivity. Also a Mobile hotspot. So I invested a little into this.
I wish companies like Adobe created programs like Photoshop or Lightroom for ARM processors for Surface.

Hmmm good review but the new split screen functionality is relevant only in metro mode. In desktop mode you can split the screen anyway you see fit due to the way the desktop functions.
I'm starting college next year and am stuck in between this and the original surface pro, Im getting one of them off of ebay and it is only an $80 difference but thats all i can afford. what would you guys recommend for office and also doing internet research?

@ArmanJakupovic when u say not optimized for touch what do you mean? I use it daily and never had a problem touching anything or navigating. Even right mouse clicks are optimized for touch because u can glide up and down the popup and high light what u want to select before confirming.

Took a look at it today. Text looked better on this than it did on the Yoga 2 at 3200x1600.. Still like a 4:3 form factor better though.

I think you could have a good time with the surface. With office and an awesome version of Internet Explorer that runs flash, so it will run pretty much every website that your desktop gets. With those two you can research and take notes at the same time. Its really fantastic.
