Shows how powerful Luke's voice was you can hear him banging out the chorus in the background almost to the point you can't hear anyone else, what a singer
That show in Stockholm was great. Luke played and sang the best "Whiskey in the Jar" I've heard from The Dubliners. It's a pitty we can't find that performance on UA-cam anymore.
I use to sing this song with my little sister driving home from picking her up from after school care. I tried singing several other Irish songs with her, but this is the one she loved.
Thanks mate for putting this up. I love this song so much. If you have any more dubliners live performances from this period don't hesitate in putting them up
The legend of this song as told to me is the woman and the baby was starving to death during the potato famine. Weila Walia was the baby crying. She could not longer stand not having food for the baby and killed the poor child so it would no longer suffer. RIP Luke and Ronnie you have no idea how you helped me cope when I was growing up..
This song reminds me of 40 years ago, growing up in the Bronx. The family would tie one on, and this would be the result (along with Snowy Breasted Pearl:)
This is great but my favourite verse isn't here, or in any other Dubliners version I can find. It goes on the very end: "The moral of this story is A weile weile waile Don't stick knives in babies' heads Down by the river Saile"

A pity indeed
The real dubliners, all of them thanks

The best ever! When a tot - sang this on long car trips and in Ireland that means anything over 50 miles!
Even more enjoyable seeing this, as it is footage showing the classic Dubs line-up. Ciaran at one end, Luke at the other, both so much missed.
Ronnie deserved to be the Dalai Lama. Pure in spirit. Such a wiseman
Love the "3 loud knocks" part
proud to b a dubliner.great song
brilliant song.... remember it from my child hood... thanks for puting it on

never another like ronnie and the boys
can't associate this song with anyone other than Ronnie Drew.
this song exists in swedish aswell
an old song sung by kids,, "nere vid akersälva"
The Kingdom for the all Ireland dublin for music
you should be on it, there's more. get it on love it
It should be called "The River Saile" (also as "Weile Waile", if you prefer)
That is the swedish tv stations fault, not his
lol, would loved to see that !!
i sing this song 2 my son never fails to get him 2 sleep, much 2 the dismay of his mum
Weela Wallia is the name. No wonder it's so hard to find this song.
lol, a face a mother could only love,
hehe i still think thats pushing it!!!
COOL
The song by Euskefeurat is called Kwad, but they sing "down at the Pite river" in the refrain
Tis indeed.
always remember this from my childhood ,,never understood why a woman in the wood would kill her child

"The moral of this story is
A weile weile waile

I'm gonna use this to scare my kids before bedtime...
maybe its a change of life baby
I never knew Bob Ross was a member of The Dubliners.
OMG NO WAY
Isn't this pretty typical of what children actually sing/tell?
It's not like the ones I remember from my childhood are any nicer whatsoever.
@rojblake82 It's a depressing song, but the tune is so simple and yet so beautiful, it speaks to the soul and the soul listens.
i bet this one of the first Death Metal lyrics^^
ha ha that comment i like !!!
i didnt know anthony hopkins sang that well
Ronnie Drew (guitar)
Christine Cavanaugh (violin and voice of Chuckee Finster)
Ah this sounds like the Infanticide of Mary Farrar by Bertolt Brecht.
Its WEILA WEILA Wailia. The Title of the song is RIVER SAILE
Weila Walia**
she lived in wood
@CanIEditMyUserName cuz the name of the song is actualy weila weila waila.
walia walia is the name of the song not wecha walia
why is wecha pronounced weilla
Katastroof - Neje T'is Gien Waar He :D
its weile waille not wecha wailia
wots the point in tryin to find a meanin for it? it's a traditional fun song for kids, tryin to add meanins to it spoils it.
cali dally etitt morgon' utryl....sorry to many beers...lol...not galic really...he he!
ye i knw, but that'd b stupid, thers too many politically correct people around.
Please, don't breed.
