  • We're celebrating 40 Years of Spandau Ballet. Watch 'To Cut A Long Story Short' performed on BBC Top of The Pops on 13th November 1980!
"On its first week of release “To Cut a Long Story Short “ entered the UK singles charts at No.89, but the second week it jumped up to No.43 and the band were selected to appear on Top of the Pops for the first time. The show was broadcast live 40 years ago today."
40 Years - The Greatest Hits out now @ lnk.to/Spandau...
Spandau Ballet are one of Britain’s great iconic bands having sold over 25 million records, scored numerous multi-platinum albums and amassed 23 hit singles across the globe since their humble beginnings as a group of friends with dreams of stardom in the late 1970s. It wasn’t long before they became fully-fledged members of the iconic Blitz Club scene and established themselves as one of the super-groups of the 80s.
The band's classic line-up features brothers Gary and Martin Kemp on guitars, vocalist Tony Hadley, saxophonist Steve Norman and drummer John Keeble.
Spandau Ballet’s hits include Gold, True, To Cut A Long Story Short, Through The Barricades and many more.

    Lyrics:
    Soldier is turning
    See him through white light
    Running from strangers
    See you in the valley
    War upon war
    Heat upon heat
To cut a long story short
    I lost my mind
    Sitting on a park bench
    Years away from fighting
To cut a long story short
    I lost my mind
    Standing in the dark
Oh I was waiting for man to come
    I am beautiful and clean
    And so very very young
To be standing in the street
    To be taken by someone
    Questions questions
    Give me no answers
That's all they ever give me
    Questions questions
Oh look at the strange boy
    He finds it hard existing
To cut a long story short
    I lost my mind

Yes, his voice is one of the most incredible of that era of musicians. Only George Michael had the greater voice. Tony's voice today is still so beautiful to listen to.

It must have been fantastic to have grown up in the Eighties, hearing all this fantastic music happening all the time! Oh yeah, I was there, it happened, it was fantastic, it really happened, you never knew that when you'd turn the radio on that you'd hear something like this for the first time ever (just like everybody else). Best time to grow up ever.

I'm telling you I remember this material coming out when I was about 10 and we'd discuss it in school the next day. There was genuine excitement....I wanted a Prophet 5 synthesizer and coudn't understand why my parents wouldn't buy me one lol.

We saw it every week, enjoyed it, and thought it would get better.. Always looked for a new sound. Ska, Reggae, post punk, Synth, Indie, Goth, early House. Depeche Mode, Human League, The Cure, The Smiths, The Mission, Sisters of Mercy, SExpress, MARRS.. And then ther were class acts everywhere. Queen, U2, Simple Minds, Bon Jovi, Guns n Roses, The Police, Sting.. Duran Duran, Dire Straits, Genesis, KISS, Level 42, Yazoo, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and the list is long. Michael Jackson and Madonna and all the rest of the mega pop of the day around as well.

Marvellous. One of the 3 yop songs of the spans for me, the freeze, paint me down and(?) Lifeline cos of the positiv vibe but i'd rather been choosing pleasur, maybe.. i love their soul funk pioneering experimenting as we can hear on Diamond. It was not the sucess they've expected and the follow uo True is a remarkable blue-eyed-soul work ,a master piece.. but i'd love them to follow this revolution that is Diamond even the big atmospheric suit of missionary, pharaoh and science &...is an original desbraving of new forms of sounds and songwriting. Love them to be more adventurous and not so conservative. That will get us a superior band in the follow up of the pioniring of the talking heads or simple minds at that time. More eclectic and more open minded!
