Wow! You taught me something here. I had never heard of Chikankari before. I am a great appreciator of artisan creations so I am now on a mission to find a Chikankari outfit in the U.K. 🇬🇧. Any idea of stockists here?
The fact that Jali work is so difficult has opened my eyes. Now I will look for authentic work. Thank god we have a handloom fair everyone two months in my town where traders bring authentic handcrafted items and clothes from all around the country.
I appreciate that you are showing us these beautiful artisans and the real vs the fake! I love the hard work that goes into the clothes! Thank you Manisha ❤
I'm from Lucknow, and i agree even our moms look for cheap Chikankari bcz it gets confusing for them to spot any difference. This video was informative.
My mother was a government school teacher posted in Gonsainganj area ,there they have this cluster of villages where chikankari is still traditional occupation catering majorly to Chhangamal and nearby ganj market ,however profit margins are very skewed in favour of retail (handmade labour for a metre of cloth is usually around 250₹)…it’s even hurtful that discrepancies in quality and cost are a blow to the repute as well as economy of this industry!
There was nothing fake maybe just 10 years back. We at Lucknow used to get only genuine chikankari. Just over consumerism and social media are killing it.
Every state in India has a long list of traditional art form, Handicrafts and Textiles. Yet most Indians including myself are not aware about them. Thanks for this wonderful content. Please also visit Bhagalpur in Bihar which has Bhagalpuri silk industry but sadly It too is in bad condition. It will be much helpful to the weavers and the local community. 🙏
Thanks so much for info..my husband did bring chikankari fabric from Lucknow and now I understand he was cheated..It was not cotton fabric but something like synthetic..
Labels need to write "imitation chikankari" because the people understand chikankari to be handwork for which a premium is paid as they know craftsmen and women are involved in the process of creating the design on the clothing piece. Even if you don't know what chikankari is, you would still expect it to be a premium product linked to craftsmen and women. I'm glad Manisha made this video and others on this topic. She's great at giving you the whole picture so beautifully.
Totally agree with you Manisha! I make sure to buy Chikankari clothes from Lucknow only and look for good quality hand made stuff, even if it’s a little pricey. I love chikan work and also learnt to do this embroidery while studying fashion. Look forward to your Lucknow vlog!! Cheers! ❤😌
I have been developing love for natural fabrics and Indian handicrafts when it comes to my attire. I love this series. I want to keep authentic pieces in my collection. It maybe low in number but higher in quality. Very grateful for this knowledge..
Girl thanks for this. We sometimes have to go out of India to appreciate what we have back home. I just got back and the wealth of handlooms and fabrics are unbelievable. I have boycotted all malls and fast fashion companies ❤
I am thankful for this video. Being from Lucknow, it pains me a lot when I see "chikankari embroidery" sold by so many mass producing companies and stores.
Aajkl ki jo viral kurtis hai.... actually mere saath incident kya hua ki when I ironed the sleeves the threads got burned instantly I bought them online from Flipkart I don't understand this
I almost quit thinking this was about food, and fake chicken curry is made using soya etc 😂. Good that you have highlighted this craft form here - very informative.
I am soooooo glad you made this video. I have been collecting sarees made from pure fibres and absolutely love embroidery....I have been seeing the stuff in most high end stores and know it's all fake....once your hand touches a pure mul, georgette, chiffon, cotton and the embroidered threads you can never buy a mixed, fake yarn or embroidery. I have been embroidering as a passion too...its a relaxing art form that i dont think any young person spends time learning ....just loved your video. ❤️
thank you, I've always loved Indian artisianal textiles but never knew what they were, different styles and techniques. I definitely will be more attentive to the styles and even make sure I buy better garments. Thank you so much.
Is there any shop that u can recommend us who sells online but will deliver genuine product I am from Chandigarh and this same thing happened to me I went to Jaipur and was scammed by rajasthali textiles development corporation who pays rikshaw driver to bring customer to them they give 30 percent commission to them and rikshaw driver will say that it's a govt shop whereas there is no govt shop in Jaipur who sells Jaipuri stuff I bought 4 Jaipuri rjai for 18000 rupees of different quality which actually are of not more than 8000 rupees so we need to be aware of such shops in every city who betray tourist
Thanks for putting so much efforts on creating this video and educating people on fake chickankari and supporting the artisan who put so much effort in creating this master piece. I always learn something new from your videos.
Wonderful work dear. I'm from Lucknow and have experienced many times where people selling any type of embroidery saying it's chikankari. But hum toh class laga dete Hain aise logo ki😂😂
So helpful…I was scammed by Label by aishwaryika as I had paid around 14000 but received a bad quality product which was not returnable…Thank you so much for this video🧡
Most of nykaafashion hidden gems and not so heard of brands are a scam. I have purchased few products- either the fabric or the stitching were off in all these cases. It is better to buy from local artisans.
It's really time consuming & the matter of money & energy investment to make such knowledge sharing vlogs. Since chikankari kurtas are too expensive to afford sometimes (atleast 7-8000 bucks) & it's heartbreaking when you're cheated on. I really appreciate you & your efforts to make people (especially women) aware of the same. Love 💕
I know many types of embroideries that’s why I bought my clothes from a shop which sells limited edition . They trained many women and empowered them . Their pieces are expensive but worth it . Lots of people don’t know about authentic hand made embroidery so they get cheated . Thanks for your input
Manisha, this was a great video about such a beautiful Indian craft. I'm gonna look at some of the more upscale Indian clothngs shops here in Chicago (and we have several) to see if they carry the real Chikankari 😉I'll let you know! Looking forward to your video on Lucknow!

I appreciate all your efforts. But I have a doubt here. Why not make the machine do only the mechanical part of it? The artisan can come up with the design to express herself and avoid all the physical labor involved.
If you’re a seasoned embroiderer you know fake work from real. But it’s difficult for the inexperienced eye to distinguish between machine work and chikankari. It’s pretty shady of Biba to sell hakoba as Chikan. The lady is absolutely right about the quality of work. Even, fine work done slowly is very different from hastily done sparse work.
Hi Manisha, Thanks for this wonderful information. Can you please share the details of the black jacket you are wearing right now in this video. Is it available online?
Thank you Manisha for this. As an embroiderer, this is extremely valuable information that needs to get out there. That embroidery is stunning. The scammers are getting more and more adept at faking quality goods. I would much rather buy quality item direct from the artisan, then through an Internet website. Having a blog would be wonderful so we know where we can go to the direct source and support the artisans directly. Just like when Karl documented, the fake cashmere and pashmina shawls. People need to be aware of this, and not support fake or scamming. In Jordan queen, Rania has all over the country textile collectives run by women. They can go there. They make these wonderful Jordanian embroideries that are sold to the tourist market directly and they’re controlled and regulated and you know what you’re buying is supporting these women in these co-ops. I wonder if India has such groups?
It sucks that the scamming has gotten so complicated that even the scammers have convinced themselves that their stores are the real Seva store. Not everyone can afford real chikankari. So if someone wants to buy machine embroidery let them buy ut and feel pretty. Nobody's gonna take their clothes with them after they die.

No one can fool me for real chikan-kari. Murri work is my pet. I assure you, real chikankari is worth the price. Here's to all visual learners who visit this video and wish it was summarised : Title: How to Buy Authentic Chikankari
Introduction:
The speaker was shocked to discover major brands, like Biba, selling fake Chikankari.
This prompted them to visit Lucknow to learn how to differentiate between real and fake Chikankari.
What is Chikankari?
Chikankari is a renowned Indian embroidery, originating from Persia during the Mughal period.
Described as "poetry on fabric," it's closely associated with Lucknow and holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for authenticity.
How Chikankari is Made:
Authentic Chikankari involves a meticulous process, including block printing, embroidery, washing at the Dhobi Ghat, and finishing.
It's done on high-quality natural fabrics like cotton, chanderi, silk, or their blends.
Machine embroidery, on the other hand, is faster and cheaper but lacks authenticity.
Signs of Authenticity:
Real Chikankari exhibits loose threads and knots at the back, showing human involvement.
It's crafted on high-quality fabrics that feel luxurious and elegant, avoiding rough or cheap appearances.
Authentic pieces showcase a variety of stitches and motifs, inspired by local elements and featuring intricate designs.
Embellishments like Mukaish work are common in real Chikankari, while fake copies often use inferior materials or fake embellishments.
Beware of Scams:
Some shopkeepers may attempt to sell unfinished or machine-made Chikankari as authentic.
Online, fake stores may display stolen images of real Chikankari but deliver machine-made pieces of inferior quality.
Conclusion:
Quality should be prioritized over quantity when purchasing Chikankari.
Investing in one authentic piece is preferable to buying multiple cheap copies.
Thank you Manisha !!! I dont own a real piece yet. Soon one day !

Miss?sorry to say you that you need more knowledge and have to visit and work with the artisans for six to eight months and then only you can learn------ further in the shopping of silver jewelry in dariba kalan and Amrapali you didn't realize your make and personal hygiene-----may be because of your reasons but you should have worn some full covered clothing sorry sory
Can you suggest some online portals selling only authentic chikankari works?
🙏
Pl name a few brands in Mumbai which sell good quality chikankari?
You should make videos in Hindi as well.. because a huge population is losing the skill /expertise to differentiate between real and fake
When I see these kind of video is really heart breaking that people don't know what the really is. I know all the work from strach and moreover this work can't be done by machines at all.
Local markets sell more genuine ethnic stuff than brands. How is this new information?
One can tell by just looking I guess…thanks for the video!..
Tq dear,to know the quality over quantity ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I second it, machine chikankari ruins our artisans 😡😡😡
