I would encourage everyone, regardless of their zones, to follow Jenna. I see that a lot of people here benefit from her experience in a specific zone, but there is a great value in all of her videos because she is explaining why things work or don't. All major takeaways from this video are applicable to all zones - for example, spinach is light sensitive regardless of the temperature; spinach will bolt faster if planted densely etc. . these fineses are what will definitely improve everyone's understanding of the plant's optimal growing requirements and help you have a better harvest. It's not that big of a deal to adjust planting calendars for your specific zones - Jenna's practical knowledge and in depth no bs approach to fundamentals are actually very rare on YT. I'm from Serbia, my area falls somewhere between zones 6 and 7, but my elevation, nearby river and specific winds create a microclimate that is quite challenging for vegetable production. I would not be able to have a lush, year around vegetable garden without in depth knowledge of soil chemistry, microbiology and plant physiology. Thank you again for doing an amazing job here, Jenna. I consider you my neighbor from other side of the globe 🌎
Your comment just made my day-- thank you so much, and best wishes for a fantastic gardening season!
Jenna, you are my zone 6a Oracle. I literally talk around the dinner table about “Jenna said…or Jenna planted….” As a guide to what we need to do. Lol 😊.
THANK YOU for giving us in cooler zones such great info!
I Just planted spinach last week in a raised bed. And have indoor seedlings coming up as well. Keep us this great channel! ❤
I've recommended " Growfully with Jenna " to everyone who shows the least interest in gardening or requesting my homegrown veggies.
So many people just afraid of failure they don't succeed.
💯 best advice is "Growfully with Jenna " to help any gardening questions.
I've built my wife a Asian hoe like Jenna but a left hand as my wife is lefthand and loves to garden also.
Same!!
😊💚
I planted spinach for the first time yesterday. Zone 6. Fingers crossed.
I hope it does well for you!
I cover my tiny seed veggies with a heavy felt cloth it was very successful last spring and for my fall planting out did that board trick.
As you advised me last year with success, I planted my radishes carrots and beets this morning.
Sadly, my wife doesn't like spinach as I like it and good for us.
Thanks for the heads up.
I'm looking forward to seeing you Saturday on the Urban Gardener live program
That's a smart idea!!
Too funny seeing this today. I live in N. Central Indiana and just planted Spinach (N. Zealand & Bloomsdale) and radishes today.
I think many times I watch your videos just because I love gardening and you are such a great presenter. I admit I do listen to see if there is anything I can add but that isn't very often.
Pest pressure can be lessened with an abundance of natural predators. As we talked about earlier, that means the best thing we can do is have an abundance of native plants in or around our gardens.
Oh and I do have one thing to add about bolting... Swiss Chard. ;-)
Good call-- Swiss Chard is my go-to, all-seasons green!
As usual, your coverage of this topic is pertinent and comprehensive. Thank you
I’m zone 6 now, so I be planting this week
Glad you think so!
I just resowed my spinach for the third time. The first one I accidentally dropped the tray. The next one nothing came up seeds rotted. Now I sowed with brand new seeds. Hardest part is getting seeds germinated. Third time is a charm.
Same for me ✋️
Soil temp is 41°f. I took its temperature yesterday. Thank you for sharing soil temps!
I hope it feels better soon. 🤒😂
@RealBradMiller 😂
I have definitely struggled. I sowed some directly in a garden bed last fall and they came up during a warm spell and are growing well now. They went through some pretty cold temps. Others that I direct sowed this year haven’t shown themselves yet. I do have some in small pots that I’m going to plant out this week. I love spinach and would be so happy if I could just grow some!
I hope they show themselves soon!
I am also from Ohio and follow a lot of what you do. I like when you test different ideas on how to do things. I learn a lot from you❤❤❤
Always great to hear from a fellow Ohioan!
Keep it coming Jenna. I’m in a similar zone and climate and look forward to following you. Planting spinach tomorrow.
Happy planting!
Instead of watering with water I used ice from my ice maker between the rows and hide them behind my tomatoes and that has helped keep them from bolting early on me
You know what. I once told someone you never, ever, ever water anything with ice cubes... Spinach may be one of those plants.. I have some crow pie to eat. 😂
@@RealBradMiller I would put it in the bottom of the rows between the hills I planted on and it helped to keep the soil cooler.... I think lol
Well that's a clever idea!
@@GrowfullywithJenna between the shade and ice, it seemed to work for me but as they say, correlation doesn't always link to causation. I'm going to try it again this year and see if the results are the same
Hi Jenna, the Growing Like a Viking channel sent me here, looking forward to combined production. Eva
Hello and welcome! I can't wait to learn about home made fertilizers from him!
I’m hardening off some spinach seedlings now and will also direct sow seeds after our rain chances get out of here in southern Indiana.
Thank you for this video. I'm in zone 6a also but in Indiana. And I have yet to successfully grow spinish. Now I feel confident because of your help. Happy growing Jenna 💚
Best wishes for a fabulous spinach harvest this year!
EXCELLENT INFO - all issues I've had in the past two years you covered - Thank You so much!
Such useful information! I always learn something new, and love the details you add. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Spinch has been an awesome seed for me to winter sow in jugs in zone 6b!
So helpful, I plan watch again take notes! I want beautiful spinach!
Such a great video. I am going to add a shade cloth today. Reaching 80 degrees today in 8a. I love having over wintered spinach when not mulch else is going on.
Awesome tips and tricks for spinach 🤩 Thanks for sharing!
Happy to share!
I always trouble growing spinach the second time. I try so many ways. Middle of August and September. Never no luck! I would like to try the winter spinach. The last two seasons I started to plant spinach in the middle of March, it works well
HELLO JENNA, I have just watched the live session with
Nate from "Garden like a Viking"
He gave a Shout Out for you to Grow Fully With Jenna.
Love NATE! Has taught us so much so grateful. I have been part of his channel for about 2 years.
Looking forward to watching a live session with the both of you.
I am from South Africa 🌍🇿🇦

Hello!! I'm excited to learn some homemade fertilizer techniques from him!!
I was just waiting for some rain (today) to put some spinach seedlings out. Grew some hydroponically inside this winter, the lettuce did better, pH related.
Since my cat has been gone the bunnies feasted on my spinach and lettuce last year, will not give them the same opportunity this year, lol.
Stay Well!!!
Oh I'm so sorry to hear that your cat is gone! Do you think you'll get another to keep the bunnies at bay?
@@GrowfullywithJenna I miss that cat terribly. If it was just me I would get another cat, unfortunately that got voted down. I even had a rat dig a burrow under my large raised bed behind the garage. Rats have to be dealt with carefully, they are just to damn smart.
Stay Well!!!
Thanks for the share. And the list of varieties you've found. Wow I've heard of one of those. Bloomsdale. Will be trying Malabar this year which is an Asian heirloom. Not a true spinach but close and used the same way. Supposedly heat tolerant. Grows like a vine so needs trellis . Would be a nice summer option. Seeds are from MIgardner .
Thanks again😁
This was really useful, thanks for taking time to share.
Glad it was useful!
Done! Thanks Jenna! Greetings from Sweden/Stockholm, appr +2 degrees C this morning.
Greetings!!
Here from Garden Like a Viking tribe.
Love your content for my Midwest
zone 6B garden -
many thanks❤❤❤
Hello & welcome! Always lovely to hear from fellow Midwesterners, and I'm so glad he sent you my way!
I have to grow on the west or north side, my spinach(planted 1-12-24) all bolted as soon as they got two sets of leaves. Longstanding my butt!! 😂 Where I had it was a weird micro-climate, I guess.
Not-so-longstanding 😆
Nice dear ❤
Wow, There is a lot to know about planting Spinach. I just planted some seeds 3 days ago. I planted some last year but it was too close to summer in June (Massachusetts) and they didn't grow.
Good information...
Thanks for the instructive video Jenna. I will put the info to good use!!!
Popeye.
Great content Jenna! Regarding using shading or plants to shade. Will that be enough to slow the bolting? What percentage of shade cloth do you use? I was thinking 50%.
I use 40%, which seems to do the trick here.
In Virginia zone 7b l direct seed in October then overwinter. Spring plants always bolt.
Oh, gonna resow then. My seeds were 2 yrs old, just an extra seed for insurance.
Thank you
Thanks!
Thanks so much! I hope this video was helpful!
Hello! I planted spinach today because of you! 6 different varieties! Wish me luck. Thanks for the help. Apparently ive been waiting too long. May i ask, where do you go for flower seeds? Im having trouble finding delphinium and foxglove varieties. Thanks again ❤ Much love
Oh I'm so glad to hear this!!
I get my flower seed from a lot of different sources, but I know Park seed has delphinium & foxglove.
@@GrowfullywithJenna Thank you I'll check them out.
My spinach sprouts fine, but never grows. Anything I can do to get bigger eaves. I'm in zone 10a
Can spinach be self seeded after bolting?
If you have the right climate/weather conditions, yes.
I just planted spinach yesterday (5/05) did I plant them too late?
It depends on where you're located. For me, this would be too late.
@@GrowfullywithJenna I am right outside Chicago
Is growing spinach inside not a possibility?
Have to say I am not a fan of Malabar spinach. I haven’t tried the other options.
Honestly, I grow it primarily as an ornamental 😄
