Music helped me get through a difficult childhood. After 50 years it’s still an integral part of my life. Playing the cello as a teen gave me an appreciation for diverse styles of music.

As someone who's pretty much constantly got an earworm going (I struggle to imagine a moment where I haven't), it's nice to have some more background. My preferred "solution" is to replace a bad one with a good one by the way. Since most of mine are actually enjoyable, I never lack for a healthy selection from the last few days to root out whatever I'm fighting. I have a few peculiarities that don't quite fit the information presented though, perhaps as a result of the particular intensity of my habit.
The biggest is probably that over time, my earworms are less and less often in the catchy hook territory and more frequently ever-more-bizarre sections of highly complex compositions (prog, flamenco, jazz, etc.). It's not just that I'm pulling from complex songs because I often enjoy listening to them, but even the part of the song I'm stuck with is just a very strange choice to fixate on, even when the song has other parts that are clearly identifiable hooks. Perhaps my brain is just so used to confronting the unexpected at this point that it's more willing than most to try to make sense of the weirder aspects of a composition. I can't really think of another explanation. Of course, I do still get normal earworms, and yes, I do still enjoy simple, popular music as much as ever (unless it's from the last 20-30 years...despite only being 29 myself).
Another peculiarity is that I on rare occasion get a name stuck in my head on repeat rather than music. It usually doesn't have any meaningful significance to me, but I usually find the sound/rhythm of it to be an oddity. The first one I can remember from childhood was "Paul Bunyan". Another one from within the last few years was "Reince Priebus", who I still know almost nothing about. Name earworms tend to be annoying, especially since they're so short and repetitive and I never actually care about the subject in question. This might also happen with phrases, I just struggle to remember any examples at the moment, whereas the names stick with me more clearly. Perhaps they're just less annoying and meaningless.
There's an odd story I have with one particular earworm. One day, out of the blue, the vague shadows of a song got "stuck in my head", despite not being able recall almost anything about the song and not having any idea of its name. I had only heard it probably one time, years prior, with no associated memory to connect it to. I didn't even have a melody, chord progression, or rhythm; just some shadowy ideas about its overall tone, the thought that "I'll know it when I hear it", and somehow knowing it was a Jethro Tull song. So naturally, I scoured what I had of their library, and finally settled on "The Whistler". I wasn't even 100% certain when I did hear it, but the more I played it back in comparison to the other songs I was considering, the more it settled in as "the one". Just bizarre. It did kick off my first real Jethro Tull phase though, which is nice. I'm always going through a few different musical phases at once, and often revisiting them multiple times later on.
Hopefully some of that was interesting to someone.

Just this morning I was washing the dishes and Petula Clark's "Downtown" popped into my head, out of nowhere. I sang along to the earworm that had set up shop in my head and finished the dishes. Then I played the video on UA-cam. In addition, I watched your "reaction video" to the song and your impeccable analysis of Ms. Clark and her iconic song made me love the masterpiece even more. I find it's often a rhythmic thing too. Sometimes when you're out walking you get a particular song in your head. I know that that's the science of why 'Stayin' Alive' became so popular. The scene where John Travolta is walking down the street to that song in Saturday Night Fever with both the pizza and the paint can. The BPM is just above normal walking pace, that's why it has that particular strut to it.

So, I always have a song in my head. Always. And the only thing that kicks an old song out, is a new song coming in. Also, my brain tends to go to ear works super quickly- a simple word association is enough to kick off a new song. I’ve just gotten used to having a constant soundtrack in my head.
Before I started this video, it was Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meatloaf and now, thanks to this video, it’s Don’t Stop Believing. Thanks for that. I know you said 25% of people get more than one per day, but I wonder how many people have it constantly? I know my brother also constantly has music in his head too- but we’re both very musical people, I’m a singer and he’s a bass guitarist.
I will say that playing my ear work does not work for getting rid of it. If anything, it just strengthens it. My only way of getting rid of it is to replace it. Either by plying a different song, or a different song getting stuck in my head. That’s the only way it works.

I wake up pretty much every day with a song in my head. And I don't hear just the melody. I have a very vivid memory of instrumentation. That doesn't bother me too much. But for me, this goes one step further...and I wonder how many people experience this: I emulate the instrumentation with my mouth. I drum with my teeth and play guitar with my tongue.
    ...anyone?
In fact, right now, I have something that could be strained muscles in my mouth, because I do it a whole lot, lately. I know that stress probably increases this. But I have done this all my life, even in times without stress. It's likely that people who sing or play instruments actively - which I do not - are not prone to internalize it, either.

Hi. This video is actually the most dear thing I’ve ever watched. It’s so insightful and thought provoking. I don’t think I’ll ever recover from how deeply it touched me and made sense to my feeble brain. I find that my ear worms are actually instrumentals. The main one I’m always humming (not that I mind this tune, actually) is “The Force Theme” from Star Wars. It’s beautiful and calming to me so I don’t find myself bothered by it. But, watching this video helped me to recognize its repetitive nature, its importance to my younger life, and its never ending melody/theme. Right now, it's "You Don't Even Know Me" by Faouzia.
Sometimes I'll connect two songs that ordinarily wouldn't work together (different keys that would clash, for instance). Then I can't sing the first song because the second one keeps taking its place at a certain place. I have to find the first song, play it to figure out what I keep messing up and why.
I agree with some of you: My mind often feels like its own radio station. I almost always have songs in my head. I've had the same song stuck in my head for four or five days before. It was horrible!
The other night I heard a phrase in a video, and this little snippet of rap kept going through my head. I couldn't figure out what the heck I was remembering, because all I had was that one phrase "I take a look at my life," and the rhythm of the rest of the line.
it was "Ganger's Paradise". I finally figured it out. Fascinating how our brains latch onto things!

I worked in a factory in highschool, back before iPods, and I was doing an extremely repetitive job in a loud environment, so I would "play" songs in my head, and now 25 years later, there is always an annoying song in my head, so detailed I can pick out specific instruments. Sometimes it gets so annoying I can't listen to music for a few weeks, and then the intensity goes down. But there's always something there.

There were literally parent teacher meetings about my repetition of Country Roads by John Denver then later Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles. (Must be common offenders.) My old boss liked to have music playing in the office. It was either a CD or cassette which would obviously stop at the end track. When it stopped I would immediately start singing without conciously realising the music had stopped. I would sing a random song and not one from the previous CD. This happened so often that after I'd sung a few notes either I or someone else would realise that it meant the music had stopped. You've heard of relative and perfect pitch? I have bewildered pitch, which meant my colleagues couldn't get a new cd on fast enough to stop my torturous warbling in the key of L . It was only me that would be "triggered" by the music finishing and it happened almost every time. Is there a reason for this or am I a human juke box? lol

I’ve had Sunrise Avenue’s “Fairytale gone bad” stuck in my head for several days - ironically the part that starts with “Get out of my head”.
On a side note: I generally do like most of my earworms. That’s how I became a fan of my favourite band. I just wasn’t able to get that one song out of my head. It has been three and a half years and 24 of their concerts since then and I still regret absolutely nothing!

I tend to listen to songs on repeat until I learn all the words, so words are the trigger for me. Any conversation, any tv show or movie, any passage in any book, any passing thought, anything anywhere is likely to trigger one.
"If I" (If I were a flat-head screwdriver, where would I be?) triggers either "If I were a rich man, la-la-la-la la-la" or "If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning"
I always called it my soundtrack, because my brain is always playing one until a different one is triggered. 😂

I have had this earworm for over 30 years now, a song my dad used to sing in church when I was a kid, and as a kid, I used to repeat it. And yeah, sometimes it comes with a whole orchestra, changes of key, three or four voices harmony, etc LOL. And I can't get rid of it. It just pops into my brain in the most unexpected situations. It's freaking annoying most of the time.

This is another great video about music like your one on the armonica. It would be great if you did one about how a person having lost the ability to put thoughts into words because of disease or disorder sometimes can get speech back. The key is they can sings word from a songs they know and then are able to recover the ability to speak the words they are thinking of. I think it's a form of Aphasia. By the way I can get the Beach Boys' Beach Baby or Coldplay's Viva La Vita stuck in my head at times. Isn't one way to get rid of an ear worm is with another ear worm.

The solution is a fairly simple one, to not think about it, and to just let the song play in your head. Without you even realizing it your mind will soon get bored and tired of it and automatically switch off that song and switch on to something else and you will not even recollect the allegedly stuck situation, and your head will just unstuck itself.

I found that one is more susceptible to ear worms when one has unresolved tension (emotional or psychological) as you comment in your video; this might come from too difficult tasks (to release it from the frustration) or too easy (as a free time distraction) and intentional unresolved tension like Elfen Lied's intro (explained by Jaime Altozano), Lord of this World by Black Sabbath or from the And there are situation-dependant ear worms: ñp

Mine run 24/7. I tap my teeth to the current song running and I have worn my teeth way down from it! Sometimes it’s a recently heard song. Much more often they are random songs that I usually like but haven’t heard in a while. Does anyone else have this 24/7? It’s like music running in the background constantly. It doesn’t exactly bother me as it’s not super invasive. Unless it’s a song I hate which is not that common. It feels like I’m really impressionable. And of course I have associations with music very strongly. I can tell you where I was the first time I heard most any song especially from childhood. Playing right now on my mind’s jukebox: Red Hot Chili Peppers “Give it away” 😩 have not recently heard that.

I thought I was just crazy. Thank you for discussing this. I have a question. What does it mean when someone says something, and you immediately think of lyrics in a song? This happens to me often and then I start singing that song in my head. on loop! For example, someone said "superstar" the other day and then I started singing "ghetto superstar. that is what you are..." It's so maddening. Or someone says "doggone" and I start singing that song 'I'll be doggone...." I'll even break out in song in front of others (and I can't sing!). I know people think I'm nuts. It happens to me a lot! And I mean a few times a week. Everything turns into a damn song in my head. What is wrong with me?

The annoying ones are the snatches of works by obscure composers thaf I've picked up from the radio. It can take ages to track those devils down.

okay, after years of research on this subject i have found the cure for "song in my head" syndrome. this works for me 100% of the time and has for years. i've tried to get people to try this but as in most things they just laugh at me and move on. if you try this method don't just try it once for 5 seconds and then give up. so here it is:
    1) you notice there's a tune running through your mind over and over and you want it to be gone.
    2) you remember the method that i'm going to give you right now
    3) you employ the method
    4) the tune disappears
the method: begin playing the theme song from the 60's tv show "the addams family" in your mind, you can even snap your fingers at the appropriate moment. if you know the words then all the better. you only need to go through the first 10-20 seconds of the song. stop and move on with your day. in a minute or two you will notice (if you even bother to think about it) that:
    1) you don't remember the song that initially was running through your head, and...
    2) the "addams family" theme has also left your mind.
when i stumbled upon this method i found it worked instantly for me. however you may need to practice as the need arises. i believe you will discover that you will soon exert your mastery over this common human malady. best wishes
