The man was phenominal...that right hand is incredible. Very impressive. RIP Mr. Black
Never gets old man!!
Yes. He was pretty amazing. A great drummer and a good friend.
This is the best drumming video I have ever seen. Considering the fact there are no drums here. Incredible skills, master of the craft.
Dave was an incredible drummer. I was blessed to have him as a friend and a teacher.
JohnX
That would take a long time to get to that level. Excellent
Garrett, yes indeed.
All the best,
John X
Fantastic. You didn't get to play with Duke Ellington without being a phenomenal musician - all of his drummers were incredible, amazing that some of them aren't much better known.
so true
Dave Black was incredible!! Clearly one of the greats, one of the greatest, who chose not to have a high profile global career. This is just terrific, thank you.
Dave was a great player and a beautiful human being. I was lucky enough to have studied with him and to have called him a good friend. Everything you stated above is absolutely spot on.
God bless,
John X
JohnX Drum Lessons Thank you John X. I was recently told that Dave made Buddy nervous… Not too many people made Buddy Rich nervous when it came to the drums and snare drum chops
Thanks for sharing that wonderful MR Dave Black. He will not be forgotten .
I can't believe I'm just now running across this. Thanks and I'm going to share it with the readers of Not So Modern Drummer.
George,
I'm happy to hear you will be sharing this with your readers. Dave was a lovely man and a
world class drummer.
All the best,
John X
His technique and accuracy is incredible. A Great Drummer and not forgotten.
Every time I see this I'm still amazed at the some of the incredible stuff Dave is playing.
I had the pleasure of going to Dave's house in Alameda and play drums with a bunch of talented drummers. What a great memory. Dave was always such a sweet heart. RIP Dave. Thanks for leaving your mark and thanks for posting this great video.
What a joy to see. Thanks Dave for your amazing contribution to music. A master for sure RIP
I was very fortunate to know and take some lessons with Dave Black in the 80s and watched him play regularly at the Hyatt in Burlingame. The man was not just an amazing drummer but a very gracious person. Very inspiring.
It must have been a joy for you.
memorable, a true tribute to the artist that gave us the young generation of musicians a legacy of what drumming really is. thanks @JohnX Drum Lessons for sharing this
I'm glad you dug this video. It was a great pleasure knowing Dave. He was a good friend and an amazing drummer.
wow, I thought I saw it all when I saw Roy Hanes, Steve Smith and Buddy Rich do hi-hat solos (all respect to those drum legends). And Dave did it with such finesse, technique, control, power, energy & creativity. Dave is truly a drum legend as well. And from what I gather, a great humble human being. May Dave rest in peace.
This brought tears to my eyes! Such mastery! Back in the 70's, when I lived in San Francisco, I played a few gigs with Dave but they were private functions and he played th gig as a professional. I was too young then to understand and appreciate his accomplishment!
You are welcome. It was my great pleasure to know Dave and to have had the opportunity to film his solo.
Happy to be able to share this and so happy to see many people have been digging Dave's playing.
He pretty much got every sound out of those hi-hats you could possibly make, he even played the stand! Thanks for the post, great video ;)
I'm grateful to have known Dave and happy that I can share a small part of his talent with the drumming community.
Yep! I feel very fortunate to have known Dave as a friend and to have seen him play many times. He was a great player and beautiful person.
Very very cool. I am so glad I run over this video.
WOW! Gotta go and spend more time on both of my thrones. One for thinkin and one for playin. Keep posting good videos like this one. Stuff like this should be made available. Good job!
What a gem - lucky to have archived that when you did - and thanks for your generosity and sharing! After a 40-year hiatus from drumming, it's videos like these that have inspired me to return to my "first love," with a new respect for amazing drumming legends like Dave Black, and of course Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Gene Krupa and others that contributed their unique signature techniques to the literature and making the art of "jazz drumming" a genre in a class of its own.
NOW DAT's WHAT I"M TALKIN' 'BOUT. That part of the kit freaked me out when I got my first one! Lot's of sounds and SussTain in those sock cymbals. R.I.P. Dave.
Amazing hand speed !!
Dave was pretty amazing all the way around. He was a good friend and a great teacher. I really miss him. So glad we did this video together.
All the best,
John X
@@JohnXDrumLessons he was my great grandfather. If you have stories about him I would love to hear them. You can reach me at isomtim@gmail.com. We don’t how many stories of him after my grandma Olga passed away
You are very welcome. I was so happy to have found this footage. Happy to share it.
Every time I watch this video I say the same thing. Glad you dug it.
Every time I watch this solo I see something new. It is truly an amazing display of skill.
This is so freaking awesome, what a skill... RIP Master
I'm so glad you liked the vid. Dave was a good friend and a pretty amazing drummer. Would of loved to seen some footage of your dad playing.
Really cool! Thanks John for posting this. I studied with Dave in the 70's and remember sitting in his garage while he demonstrated this to me. I still have his handwritten notes from my lessons.

Amazing!
John, yes, it is. Dave was an amazing drummer and had a heart of gold.
@@JohnXDrumLessons I'm ashamed to admit that he was a new name to me!
@@johnpetters John, no need to feel ashamed. It just so happens that Dave was living in the SF-Bay Area as I was and I got to study with him and became a close friend. Many of the great drummers of his time such as Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson and Joe Morello all knew and respected Dave. He played with Duke Ellington for awhile after Bellson left. Unfortunately, life on the road didn't suit Dave so he gave it up and only played locally.
Very happy to share this incredible footage. Glad you dug it.
Happy to hear you found and liked the video. It's a real treasure.
You are very welcome. I was so happy to have found this footage.
Absolutely amazing! Simply incredible.
Yes. I agree. I was thrilled when I found this footage. I'm glad I can share Dave's incredible talent with the drumming community.
Yes it is. I was s happy to have found this footage. Glad you like it.
John, thanks for posting this. Dave was amazing. And what a humble guy.
I had the great pleasure of knowing Dave for many years. Loved that man. He was a great talent and a beautiful person.
Thanks for documenting this lost art. Something else I need to work on.
You are very welcome. I was so happy to have found this footage. Glad you dug it.
JohnX
What a wonderful person! I mean from 2:03 on, it's just a musical and mind-blowing solo... But his wonderful and humble expression to the camera at the end made me choke up a bit. No words needed. This man is all of us at the end of our journey with this awesome instrument. He's up there now giving Buddy a break on the big white kit in the sky. :)
Amazing skill and, first of all, amazing artistry.
Amazing, genius. RIP. Thanks for posting. Cheers from Brazil! CB
Man, that was smoking hot!!!….that in between the hats lick was insane. I really enjoyed that. Buddy Rich is looking down saying ''Now thats how it's done son''!!!!!
What an extraordinary man.
Thanks for posting this wonderful enjoyable video. Such precision. If God has a band we know who is on drums...
Beautiful playing! Love it. I'm sure he was a great guy too!
Yep. Pretty incredible. Glad you dug it.
Dave was a badd dude and a sweet guy. A rare breed.
Someone should have bought that poor man some drums! ;) Seriously, amazing. What a loss to the drumming community but an AMAZING post. Thank you for sharing!
Dave actually hung with Steve a few times and showed him all of his signature stuff. Steve always does an incredible job of taking something, tweaking it and making it his own. Brilliant.
Good god. This is literally superhuman. He's 68 or 69 years old when this was filmed! He doesn't even break a sweat playing at a rate that could break a 20 year old. Incredible. Amazing to still be so stunningly fast and so precise. In fact, time to search for videos of him in his prime....
good call. i should do the same. this solo is amazing.
Pretty amazing what Dave could do with a hi-hat. Glad you liked it.
"A great way to remember one of the best drummers of his time. "
Of all time, i believe. He's a legend.
Thank you for your comment. This is a gem. I was so happy to have found it after all of these years. Glad to hear you're drumming again.
Best wishes,
JohnX
Wow! Amazing work!
Dave was an amazing drummer, a good friend and a true gentleman. I never heard him say on bad thing about anybody and he always had something positive about the young great drummers at the time he was alive, Weckl, Chambers, Smith....
Never seen anything like this. Incredible!
Wow, I got tired just watching Him half way through. Its amazing how some of these old timers still have the Skill, reflexes and stamina !!!
Fenomenal!

Dave was Fantastic!
Very Nice Great Hi Hat Solo !
wow...a beautiful solo....! amazing! Papa jo Jones i think is one of the inventors of this kind of hi hat solo..
That's what I said. I remember Dave doing his hi-hat solo in the Zildjian both at a NAMM show with Steve, Smith, Dennis Chambers and a few other world-class drummers looking on in amazement.
That was fabulous
Great post! Great sticking! Much appreciated.....

That was amazing.
