I worked Hardee's for 4 years. I worked the opening shift quite a bit. I hated my time at Hardee's, but their breakfast food is real. I made the biscuits fresh in the morning. They aren't frozen. The eggs are a liquid egg mix, but they're real. The sausage and bacon are frozen, of course, but it is real. The gravy is a simple powder and hot water mix with sausage crumbled in fresh off the grill. All in all, Hardee's doesnt fuck around with their breakfast.
I worked there too in the early 2000's! Their biscuits and gravy and sweet biscuits are 🤌🤌🤌 it's the only fast food biscuits I enjoy
I literally just made a comment about this we were packed every morning because we had bomb breakfast we stood on business every morning 5:30
I always get the breakfast platter whenever I have a coupon or have earned enough points for a discount, otherwise it’s a budget breaker for this old lady on a fixed income. Must ask for CRISP BACON though. But it’s my favorite fast food breakfast.
Same thing with Jack's. I don't know if they just got a messed up one or if Jack's has changed their methods, but my GF used to manage a Jack's, and it's all cooked fresh. Biscuits are made fresh every morning. Gravy is made, and then they fry sausage on the flat top and chop it up to put in the gravy. The eggs are cracked, whipped, and then cooked in a ring mold. Everything gets salt and pepper, which is, unfortunately, all they're allowed to use.
You're saying 'real' a lot. What does 'real' mean in this context? What would be an example of an item that isn't 'real'?

Former McDonald's employee here, you got an eggshell because the egg 'patty' on mcmuffins is actually two freshly cracked eggs put into a mold with a specialized tray on top that trickles water down onto the griddle and allows the eggs to steam giving them the signature rubbery texture by essentially steaming the whole eggs.
But it is in fact, real eggs.
The sheet scrambled eggs are shipped in frozen.
yeah the scrambled egg taste frozen
I always like hearing stuff like this. I think people tend very heavily towards cynicism when it comes to fast food preparation, but a lot of it comes down to management style and standards at individual franchises. Or at least that’s my experience.
I’ve had barely edible rubber eggs from McDonalds and also perfectly cooked round eggs that some passionate soul sprinkled actual paprika on. Does McDonalds even have paprika? Did they bring it from home just to give their customers that little extra touch of care?
And you forgot that the scrambled eggs for the breakfast platters are from a carton
Wow that's interesting, here in Austria the scrambled eggs are fresh too
Not getting hash browns to compare from all of them is a CRIME
😢 Yeah, I was wondering about that since I HATE frozen ones.
that's another video
I always get hash brown and put it on the breakfast sandwich to help soak up the grease. I don't care where it is they all seem to be over greasy.
unless josh has already done a hashbrown video or is going to do a hashbrown video then he should have included them in this one
I imagine not every place does hash browns, so it's a hard one to compare. Like, they didn't get the exact same thing in every place, they got their 'top 3' breakfast items.
I hate Josh's opinions on food but I love his ideas lol. He's that 1 guy in the friend group that just hates everything especially if a lot of people like it. Its annoying but the guy has undeniably great ideas on actually making food. I both love and hate-watch his content lol.
Never change Joshua!
This is the formula for a successful content creator. They walk that exact line you’re referring to. ✌️
I feel called out
As a former morning shift mcdonald's worker, the eggs for the mcmuffin are actually fresh. Got yelled at by my manager for "not cracking the eggs properly" all the time because I was actively avoiding getting shells in them 😂
I honestly love finding the occasional piece of eggshell in my McMuffin because it reminds me that the egg is real, lol
Sausage and egg McMuffin with no cheese (lactose intolerant) has been my favorite fast food breakfast for decades - partially because of the real eggs and also because actual butter.
why are those eggs so nasty though? they taste rubbery. how do you guys make them?
@@rienn8559on the grill but water is poured all around them and they are steamed as they cook
At my location, we make them on a separate egg cooker since we have a small kitchen and only 2 grills. Still pour the water over them. Also they are not seasoned and we have to cook them over hard. @@clarknorman2623
Chick-fil-A winning despite Josh skipping the chicken minis and the hash brown scramble is just a testament to how good they are at making breakfast

Josh getting irritated and rolling his eyes at fast food workers not knowing their top-3 items. Man, they don't care. This isn't a career, it's just a day job.
If you never worked fast food or retail you don't know how it is. Some people are just oblivious
yea no shit it's not a career. But if you're working there everyday you might as well get to know the menu you're serving.
Couldn't disagree more @@Jay240-o4u
I don’t think he was hating on them tho, just pointing it out
And pour over monthly sales reports to see which items get purchased the most and are most popular? Naw dude.
19:34 Joshua only just realising that all fast food restraunts follow a script is WILD
It's such an annoying question to ask the poor drive-through workers, I actually cannot watch this video if he's gonna do that at every single spot. Like do the research yourself, and just order what you learn. The cashier is not a market analyst.
@KyleNabilcy Are you daft? Or have you never worked in the food industry?
@@KyleNabilcy It's perfectly reasonable to ask the cashier what the most popular item on a menu is because, you know, they take all of the orders? What if I just wanna know what's good and popular, especially in that particular branch? I'm getting such a 'not my job' kind of energy from this for such a basic ass question that takes minimal brain power to answer. Either that or you're patronising the 'poor' fast food workers to the point where you think they can't do anything and need to be treated with kid gloves.
@@shellshocktmit really isn’t their job. It’s so subjective if you don’t have the data, and it’s not something a fast food worker is usually trained to know. If I was asked that question when I worked fast food I would just name three menu items. You’re paid minimum wage and you deal with a lot of crap (sometimes literally) and getting people who ask this kind of stuff is just annoying. It looks like a simple job but there is a lot going on in the background that a customer doesn’t see, and when you get people that throw you off like this and make your job take longer to finish, it’s aggravating. You’re not paying for a sit down place where the server knows all the details of the specialty menu the chef put together. You’re paying for cheap food that was made by cheap labor, usually teenagers.
@@m_here1 such a weirdo opinion - it's a customer service job don't take it if you cant answer the most BASIC questions

@whatsascallion not fake but processed enough to where they taste fake. like powdered eggs.
21:12 Andy’s “inoffensive” started to grow on Joshua LOL
Long comment from a former McDonald’s worker, can confirm, the “round egg” that comes in the McMuffin is in fact made from a fresh egg. Every morning at McDonalds there is a tower of egg flats chillin by the griddle waiting to be cooked fresh. They crack them into circle molds on the griddle and then they put them into the actual controversial thing that they have which is a hot holding machine that is essentially a massive microwave oven that is constantly running and the food is placed into little drawers. They only hold 6 at a time and cook more when they drop to 2 in the drawer.
The only food they still deep fry is their chicken and potatoes (fries and hash-browns), the rest is griddled. The “square” egg though…those are egg beaters that were cooked and shaped in a factory and then flash frozen, sent to the restaurant and then reheated with steam…
I know for a fact that not that long ago (like 15-20yrs ago...which i guess is kind of a long time lol) the eggs used to come in a log form that got sliced and heated...thankful that they have switched to real eggs now though.
i unironically want this series to end with "I Tried Every Fast Food Sprite in America"
Now that's a video with real utility
There’s only one correct answer. Coca-cola has had McDonald’s in a sleeper hold for years, if they don’t win, there would be riots in the streets of Atlanta
I have mapped out the best Sprite in my local area. Bad ice or forgetting to refill the syrup are the worst, too sweet/not bubbly enough isn’t great. Too full so putting the straw in floods my car is obnoxious. It’s shocking what can go wrong with a Sprite.
@@CrankyOtter Sprite being clear really messes with your ability to tell if its out.
BK or TBell will win by a mile
I’m so glad that ya’ll did Hardee’s and not just Carls Jr. My in laws used to manage Hardee’s in the 90’s and they said they made all their biscuits from scratch, and that all their eggs were fresh, real eggs, not the stuff in a carton. And I know someone who worked there recently and she said they still do that today. So I was curious how ya’ll would rate them. 8/10, not bad for fast food!

The BK near me has sort of a train station theme or something along the lines of that, haven’t went in a while but I don’t think they’ve changed it. The other fast food restaurants near me are just the same as you’d find anywhere else.
i used to work at cfa for a little bit. the sausage is jimmy dean, biscuits are made fresh every morning, yellow and white eggs come from cartons. the reason the chicken is probably not crispy is because they douse tf out of the biscuits with butter, inside both sides and the tops. also the breakfast filets are marinated with a different marinade than the lunch/dinner filets so they are in fact different.
The worst part of fast food breakfast is when you work nights and just want a burger on your way home but they won’t serve you one until three hours later.

Availability is the key here I think - they’re EVERYWHERE and not a lot of other coffee shops or bakeries can squeeze any market share, especially here in New England. The only successful non-chain coffee/bakery are well established (opened in the 50s or whatever) or in small city centers where the DD trucks can’t go (or where DD can’t change the visuals of the interior/exterior too much so it doesn’t match their branding)

Meanwhile the local Hardee’s biscuits were dense and dry.
That’s the thing about bojangles. Some of the food is made more or less from scratch, so having good cooks will make it miles better than other fast food, but a bad cook might make something worse than the flash frozen stuff other places sell.
This is the comment I was looking for. The fact that the biscuits were what they hated the most is so frustrating. When done right, bojangles breakfast is UNMATCHED
Came here to say this exact thing. In eastern NC they are VERY consistently solid.
I think you missed out not getting the breakfast burrito from chick fila. It is 100% the most underrated and overlooked item there.
100%! I drive 10 miles some mornings just for that chicken bfast burrito and the parfait with cookie crumbs! MMM MMM MMM
0:01 - That's a Kellogg's marketing slogan. It's not scientific.
Why is this my top comment, lol.
while its not “the most important”…i find it hard to believe skipping breakfast and going from last nights dinner to lunch the next day is somehow perfectly fine😂 guess it also depends on how much and quality of food
hardee’s breakfast is always gonna be on top for me
Christopher belongs in a "Da Bears" SNL skit. Like, seriously, they need to hire him and reboot that skit.
SNL sucks these days. I’m old enough to remember when it was still funny, now it’s just obnoxious.
Chick fil a breakfast is literally so good and it’s highly underrated! Glad it’s getting a spotlight from Josh for once!
11:07 As a person actively working at a fast food joint which sells breakfast burritos, the reason WE don't close 'em is because we use the same base ingredients on all our burritos. This allows us to prepare several ahead with just the base ingredients, and by not closing them we can pull them out and add ingredients to them. When I asked why we don't close them after we've done this, I was told "we just don't."
Not sure if it's the same at Del Taco, but it is an explanation.
not closing a burrito also significantly reduces the chance that the tortilla is torn when wrapped by people who really dont know how to wrap a burrito. Since it leaves a lot of extra "wiggle" room and the ingredients dont get compacted as much.
I thought it was to be able to add sauces easier on the road with one hand. Lol
My partner has IBS so I've been helping them with a low fodmap diet the past two weeks as we learned that there's a lot of foods that can irritate the gut, and honestly it's a real challenge coming up with tasty unique dishes when you're limited to rice meat and only a select few vegetables where you can't have onion or garlic.
Added challenge avoid "gluten free" premade pastas and whatnot but rice noodles are fine.
So far been eating just a lot of steak + some safe veggies or rice, fish/beef tacos, roast dinners but minus a lot of the fun parts, homemade fries, chicken chicharons, spam sushi, chicken noodle soup with homemade bone broth & rice noodles.
Got a lil unhinged in my craving for variety and put rice in a tinfoil tray layered on some homemade marinara sauce with fresh cherry San Marzano tomatoes diced and some cheese on top to crisp up in the air fryer and then topped it with crispy pancetta.
As bad as it sounds peanut butter on salted rice crackers have been one of my top snacks from this trial.
At some point I know I have to make the japanese rice burger thing which sounds like a messy mistake but it's one I'm willing to make.
Anyone in the comments or the man himself please help me find more exciting recipes.
soluble fiber and more water. stay away from corn, popcorn, cornmeal etc. alot of inflammation is caused by glyphosate concentrations. Metamucil is a "brand name" soluble fiber but its a widely available generic product and we buy Costco Kirkland brand. Lean about gut biome, real fermentation is key and quality full fat yogurt and other probiotic dairy. Onion and garlic is fine, its usually a red herring in FODMAP guidelines. Increase volume of all greens, soluble fiber and water. Eliminate corn and gmo/glyphosate wheat.
EDIT: FODMAP guidelines are designed to avoid fake garbage which is the majority of middle grocery store garbage. I forgot to add seed oils. Avoid "vegetable oil" particularly soybean oils which is most common in most shelf stable products and frying anything these days. Olive Oil, Avocado Oil and real bacon fat and butter are GOOD. Twice cooked potato products, producing Type 2 resistance starches are also very beneficial for feeding the gut biome properly, Chris Kresser has a bunch of research on that toipic in the wider range of gut biome. FODMAP tends to fail over time in this American "food landscape". Center your research on gut biome and the gut brain connection and you will serve yourself and your lady well. EGGS are AMAZING! Ferment any bread doughs for 3 days, that includes pastrys, loaves, and pizza doughs.
can I get some of what youre smoking?
As someone who only likes very specific things at McDonald's that aren't their burgers, the McGriddles are absolutely amazing. I might just have a sweet tooth, but I don't think they're that sweet
They’re really sweet to me but I don’t have sugar really in my diet
@@JustinBocci I love chocolate and ice cream but find mcgriddles grossly sweet
they are extremely sweet. yes u have a seeet tooth
Bojangles, just gotta have more!
Seriously, their biscuits are the best besides homemade.
This guy knows what’s up
It seems like maybe outside of NC Bojangles doesn't have old ladies making biscuits? Most McD, Hardee's, Bojangles all have people making fresh biscuits, and those didn't look like what's served here.
@@rentedroom Amen brother, NC Bojangles biscuits made by experienced women are legit. Flat, hard, dry Bojangles biscuits are the problem muddying the waters.
I dont think I've ever had bojangles thats been good outside where i live in nc or on the road in sc honestly
Best chicken biscuit!!! I live 2 hours from one in Florida. When I used to live in the Carolina’s I loved eating there
They managed to find the one Chick-Fil-A with biscuits that aren't doughy and, at the same time, dry. I'm jealous.
That Christopher character sounds like the most stereotypical Chicagoan ever lmao
Worked the food station for 2 years at Dunkin. Literally everything but the bacon, ham, and cheese are frozen. The croissants and bagel doughs are frozen doughs that go straight to the oven lol. The eggs are frozen. The sausage is frozen. The tortillas for the wraps are frozen. It's all terrible lol
I love Andy's passion for food. Dude's kinda a beast in the food biz
Hardee’s breakfast really is that good, I trust the ranking. Growing up I had the biscuits and gravy every week after Sunday school and it always slapped
When getting a Mc griddle, you have to get the sausage one with no egg and cheese. The egg and cheese just fucks up the flavor of the Mc griddle buns. The Mc griddle buns with the sausage is amazing. It’s like salty and sweet at the same time. And please more guest appearances from Chris he’s hilarious. You also fucked up by not getting the chicken bites at Chick-fil-A. It’s little buttery buns with an individual nugget in each. Even without any sauce, it’s the best.
You have 0 brain cells. They have to eat the McGriddle as-is without making hyper-specific mods. And chicken bites are not breakfast you absolute shoelace.
Personally, I'm more a fan of the chicken McGriddle. In fact, before they came out with it, I'd try to go to McDonalds right at the brekafast/lunch switch so I could order a sausage McGriddle and a McChicken (without lettuce and tomato), then switch the meats.
He says chik fil a nuggs are ass so he wouldnt like them
When it comes to fast food, you really can't go wrong with a McGriddle. Rest easy knowing you're eating the best of the worst.
Why was that Gordon Ramsay impression so good
Ummm nevermind the breakfast food ratings- this ALL STAR collab is EVERYTHANG🎉
Hardees breakfast is so fire for fast mood man. Those biscuits better than my grandma's no cap
It's never too late to start making quality content again Joshua!
The most important part of Bojangles is the biscuits. If they're not good that location is crap.
As someone that works at Mcdonalds, the steak bagel is the best item on the breakfast menu for someone that has to eat it every morning. The steak is actually fine despite how it looks, the breakfast sauce and cheese are great, and its super filling. Its hit or miss with the bagel itself, but if they toast it right its very good. 7-8/10
Also in my experience the onions are actually most of teh time the worst part as they sometimes can taste off.
The steak but with the biscuit instead of the bagel. I also work at McDonald's
The breakfast sauce hits
I kinda like the blandness in all those breakfast items lmao in the morning it just hit different. Not completely bland but simply warm and good.
at mcdonalds, you have to try the sausage egg cheese biscuit....can't believe you guys didnt get a biscuit from mcdonalds...their biscuits are actually good!
Uh. Did you really go to MCD and not get the sausage egg mcmuffin? The hell, dude. This whole thing is skewed now.
Could not agree more, what a miss
Sausage egg mcmuffin and the pancake breakfast is the iconic items
11:26 “I feel like it needs a sauce, like a salsa of some sort” YOU PEOPLE NEVER TEST THE DAMN ITEMS WITH THEIR INTENDED CONDIMENTS. IT’S PART OF THE EXPERIENCE. JESUS CHRIST WHY WOULD YOU EAT A BURRITO WITHOUT SALSA OR A SANDWICH WITHOUT MUSTARD
Edit: ALSO why would you not do a general poll to ask your audience what their favorite items are at each location you’re going to visit instead of relying on a fast food employee, they might’ve started taking orders yesterday lmao
Easily one of my biggest fucking gripes especially with chic-fil-a. THEY HAVE THE BEST SAUCES. YOU GET TO CHOOSE. During that awful era of Popeyes v Chic-fil-a sandwich reviews none of those 80 IQ fools put sauce on the chic-fil-a sandwich and drooled over the dollop of MAYO on the Popeyes abomination.
Yeah I actually think this was were they truly messed up the testing process. Like fast food workers are following a script so an unexpected question does make them have to stop and think. If the worker has been working for a while, they will probably know the answer but if not you might just end up with something random. Especially since it's drive thru and they are gonna be worried about there timer and probably won't take the time to go ask someone more experienced because they don't want to hold up the line.
I hate ketchup, mustard, or mayo on any hamburger.
Arby's sauce on roast beef or a little mayo on a chicken sandwich or hot sauce on tacos is fine but not everyone likes their sandwich standard.
"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" is actually just a marketing slogan that was developed by cereal companies in the 1950s.
Breakfast is literally the first meal you eat after you've been fasting (such as when you've been sleeping), so if you don't eat your first meal until noon, your lunch is actually when you break your fast or "breakfast."
TLDR: An early morning meal being important is actually just an advertising scam. In fact, some studies show intermittent fasting can be healthier for some people.
All that being said, this was one of my favorite of your comparison videos because I love ALL fast food breakfast foods (no matter when I eat them)!!!
Yeah and we're told syrup and cereal is good for us too 😆
0:41 what's the guy in the backseat thinking about? 😂
Vikram - camera guy
Woke up to this video. Made me hungry pretty fast which is funny because I’m bit the biggest fan of breakfast food.
Envisioning "steak" that has been sous vide for 50 years... @andy_cooks you're a riot! 😆
you"re both amazing chefs
I love Andy!! Awesome collaboration.
Del Taco at #5 is wild
