  • We have heard the theory: water going down the drain spins in different directions depending on which hemisphere you're in. But what if you are at the Equator and then move a few meters towards the Southern hemisphere, then move back towards the Northern hemisphere and try the same thing? Can a few meters make a difference? Watch this and let us know your thoughts!

    The two scams of Coriolis effect: Shaped bowls and angled water pouring. In this case, it can be either, but it is most likely shaped bowls.
    Shaped bowls: Pretty self-explanatory, when a downwards force pulls on the water, the water will move in the easiest direction the bowl allows
    Angled pouring: Even if he places a middle blocker to "stop" the water, the water will still spin in their respective halves in the same direction. When he takes it out they will just recombine into a larger pool of water and still spin.
    One thing that you should all realize without much knowledge at all, is the fact that move ONLY 10 STEPS from the equator IS GOING TO HAVE LITERALLY ZERO EFFECT AT ALL. *Crosses equator* suddenly feels how he is on the other side of earth because the spin is affecting him at a different angle by literally less than .00001 degrees. Like did you really think 10 feet from the equator of our 3958.8-mile radius earth is going to have such a monumental effect on water poured into a sink? (3958.8 miles is 20902464 feet, meaning 10 feet is less than .0001% of our earth's radius) Come on guys just think about it.

      Yep! As I said at: ua-cam.com/video/QTTJJAiQFRc/v-deo.html&lc=UgwdMVlWGZa5qM5AUll4AaABAg
      " Yes, as others have pointed out, this is not really sufficient proof, though it's still rather cool. I recommend doing an internet search, it only took me a minute to find this: (Source 1) thegate.boardingarea.com/in-which-direction-does-water-drain-at-the-equator/ in which the author explains that despite videos attempting to show the Coriolis effect are often flawed. Evidence for the Coriolis effect is better shown in that hurricanes and tropical storms rotate in the opposite direction north as they do south of the equator. Another thing, the Coriolis effect would not be strong enough to make the flower spin *that* fast. Other factors play a more critical role, such as 1) bowl shape, 2) the way the water was poured
      from source 1: “One of the biggest misconceptions associated with the Coriolis Effect is that it causes the rotation of water down the drain of a sink or toilet. This is not truly the cause of the water’s movement. The water itself is simply moving too fast down the drain to allow for the Coriolis Effect to have any significant impact.” which was found at (source 2) geography.about.com/od/physicalgeography/a/coriolis.htm, though it appears to me that it was since updated.
      Source 2 also says: "The Coriolis effect becomes more extreme as you move further away from the equator toward the poles." thus, we would ALSO expect there to be very little if any difference from just a few feet difference!!
      BOOM. Okay, so I hope that helps you viewers understand the situation a bit better :) have a nice day! "
      So yeah, I found similar evidence. Good point about how little effect would be produced from that small distance from the equator!

      Oh so that's how they did it! I remember once I heard about this and thought "yeah that makes sense!" but after years I also thought to my self "hold on there is no way this actually works" so I watched vertasium video about it and he confirmed my SUSpicion. But later on I still was thinking "ok but I know a guy that claims he saw it with his own eyes, so this must work somehow (by which I mean it either could have been just a trick or maybe unintentional thing like ground being tilted or wind blowing)" So it got me into looking for one of those videos. Also thanks for confiirming on how it works because I thought that these bowls are really SUS but they are too thin so there is no way for something to be underneath them that would sipn that water so I thought that maybe this guy spins the water with that blocker when he pulls it out. But it turns out my first SUSpicion was right and its all due to these containers. Also how did you know how this works?

    • @wscamel226
      @wscamel226 Рік тому +1

      also the bowl in the middle is a dead give away that this is a scam because if such a miniscule forces could determin wheather it turns left or right, that him taking that blocker should also make enough disturbance for it to turn one way or another.

  • @suncrafter

    This is staged for tourists. Contrary to popular misconception, water rotation under normal circumstances is not related to the Coriolis effect or to the rotation of the Earth, and no consistent difference in rotation direction between in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres can be observed. The formation of a vortex over the plug hole may be explained by the conservation of angular momentum: The radius of rotation decreases as water approaches the plug hole, so the rate of rotation increases, for the same reason that an ice skater's rate of spin increases as they pull their arms in. Any rotation around the plug hole that is initially present accelerates as water moves inward.
    The Coriolis force still impacts the direction of the flow of water, but only minutely. Only if the water is so still that the effective rotation rate of the Earth is faster than that of the water relative to its container, and if externally applied torques (such as might be caused by flow over an uneven bottom surface) are small enough, the Coriolis effect may indeed determine the direction of the vortex. Without such careful preparation, the Coriolis effect is likely to be much smaller than various other influences on drain direction such as any residual rotation of the water and the geometry of the container. Despite this, the idea that toilets and bathtubs drain differently in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres has been popularized by several television programs and films, including Escape Plan, Wedding Crashers, The Simpsons episode "Bart vs. Australia", Pole to Pole,and The X-Files episode "Die Hand Die Verletzt". Several science broadcasts and publications, including at least one college-level physics textbook, have also stated this.
    In 1908, the Austrian physicist Ottokar Tumlirz described careful and effective experiments that demonstrated the effect of the rotation of the Earth on the outflow of water through a central aperture. The subject was later popularized in a famous 1962 article in the journal Nature, which described an experiment in which all other forces to the system were removed by filling a 6 ft (1.8 m) tank with 300 U.S. gal (1,100 L) of water and allowing it to settle for 24 hours (to allow any movement due to filling the tank to die away), in a room where the temperature had stabilized. The drain plug was then very slowly removed, and tiny pieces of floating wood were used to observe rotation. During the first 12 to 15 minutes, no rotation was observed. Then, a vortex appeared and consistently began to rotate in an anticlockwise direction (the experiment was performed in Boston, Massachusetts, in the Northern Hemisphere). This was repeated and the results averaged to make sure the effect was real. The report noted that the vortex rotated, "about 30,000 times faster than the effective rotation of the Earth in 42° North (the experiment's location)". This shows that the small initial rotation due to the Earth is amplified by gravitational draining and conservation of angular momentum to become a rapid vortex and may be observed under carefully controlled laboratory conditions.

    All the information on the internet says that the Coriolis effect occurs primarily in the atmosphere and then only in correspondingly large cloud structures. It has too little effect on water and it is a coincidence, like the swirl spinning in a bathtub or kitchen sink. But there are videos online where a light, square metal kitchen sink is carried on a light frame a few meters to the sides of the equator and the effect is supposedly shown. I believe the statements of scientists who say that the effect on water is far too small and certainly doesn't work that close to the equator. But I can't see anything in all of these videos, which some claim is that the experimenter is naming something with a small hand movement. For a while I believed that the drain pipe in these bowls had a twist in it that forced the water in the desired direction. However, in the videos with the portable sink there is no elongated drain and the sink is rectangular. If it's a trick, and I assume it is, it's well done.

    • @wscamel226
      @wscamel226 Рік тому +1

      Briliant observation : ) But also kind of wrong :( The force that keeps the water from draining is the centrifugal force. As the water drains it starts spining - because of this spin it pushes away from the center, so there is less water in the center and so less water comes down the hole. And the centrifugal force comes from water's inertia - so this isn't actually a force. Yes we call it a force, but actually it is NOT a force - that's why I said that your observation was briliant - because you noticed that force, but you were also wrong because you didn't know that this actually wasn't a force. Also to give you some kind of analogy, imagine that in these bowls with holes in the middle instead of water you drop a tiny marble from it's edge. If the marble goes straight towards the center it's gonna fall into the hole imidiatly. Howerver, if you push it in the clockwise direction as it falls it wont fall down the hole imidiatly because it's gonna miss the center and it might even miss it again on it's way back, and again and again and again until it's spinning radius is basically zero so it can finally fall down the hole. The water does the same thing. If it just flows it's gonna go straight towards the center, but if you give it a little push at the start it's gonna flow down for much longer and keep spinning till it drains out completely. Also I should add important thing that the thing that gives it a little push is a coriolis effect - this force is incredibly small, and apears only if something moves perpendiculary to the equator. This is the force that makes the water spin one way or another on different sides of the equator. This force comes from the fact that earth spins so again - this force comes from inertia so this isn't a real force. And also it is incredibly small which leads me to final thing that I wanna mention: this video is fake. Or rather the setup they shown. The coriolis force is incredibly tiny and it could never be enough to start the water to spin - at least in this setup. However this is possible to be observed so I recomend you to see the video on the channel "vertasium" that shows and explains this perfectly(the video is called "does the water spinn other way in the southern hemisphere?"). In conclusion yes there is a force but it doesn't come from where the water flows and it's not even a real force. If I did not explained something suffitiently enough, ask and I'll try better.

      @bashkillszombies 9 років тому +3

      +繆克多 It's not an experiment. It's a tourist trap. You can find them at any equatorial region manned by uneducated fools taking money from uneducated fools using three types of drains on three different tubs. Or often one tub and a flick of the wrist. The Coriolis effect and gravity as a whole is far, far too weak to exert any notable force on such a small quantity of mass.

      Thank you for your reply. Yes, after watched this video, I try to find the proof of this kind of "experiment".
      However, all scientific information about this "experiment", implied this is maybe a "trick", because the initial water condition (microscopic water flow) may be the sole cause to effect the following vortex form.
      Anyway, thanks for your reply!

      You can actually do this experiment from anywhere in the northern or southern hemispheres. If you fill your sink with water you will be able to see with your own eyes which direction the water is spinning. It will be different depending on which hemisphere you live in.

    You are simply looking at the top or the bottom of the vortex. You have no choice. It is the same vortex. A low pressure vortex cannot change direction of rotation. It rotates in the same direction of spin as that of the planet, that is west to east. Just as the Earth appears to spin counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. Clearly that is not possible as the Earth would be torn in two. Viewpoint has misled us to believe that low and high pressure systems rotate in different directions in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres of Earth and other planetary, stellar and galactic bodies. The discussion in my google book shows that low pressure systems on Earth rotate in the same direction as the solid body, the planet, while high pressure systems rotate opposite to the planet’s direction of rotation, no matter what hemisphere you are in. Turn a model of the world, a globe, on its side and spin it and view it from the north and south pole and then you will understand that vortices just like the planet, spin only in one direction. When vortices cross the equator, they do not change direction of rotation. They do not have to. We are then simply looking at the vortex on its side. We are not seeing that vortex in plan view.The rotation at the equator is up in the west of your position and down to the east, the same direction as the spin of the Earth. Chris Landau. Let's see,---the water is spinning in the wrong direction (he mixed up the hemispheres)---the coriolis effect is at it's weakest at the equator, and no tornado or hurricanes can form within 5 degrees of the equator on a map (meaning even if the coriolis effect determined the direction of the water, they would all go straight down here)---and I live in the northern hemisphere where the water is suppose to spin COUNTER CLOCKWISE, yet my toilet flushes clockwise. You don't need to understand how the coriolis effect works to know how fake this is. The coriolis effect is too weak to direct such small amounts of water. Other things are more powerful such as the weight of the water, gravity, and how the bowl is designed to turn the water. Toilet bowls can't flush straight down or else the water would splash back up, so the water comes out at an angle. Whichever direction it begins with is what it will continue to go, it's not like it'll stop mid-point and go the other way because of the coriolis effect. Same thing with this guy's bowls; he's got them rigged to spin in a certain direction. In this case, the wrong direction!

  • @stevenlemerson534
    @stevenlemerson534 7 років тому +1

    I say BS! He has simply used three different sink/drains to demonstrate the coriolis affect. This can easily be rigged. It`s just a tourist trap to make money. He collects tips so he isn`t getting rich, just making a living and barely even that.
